⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Exploring Rome's Creepy Railway - The Rome/Viterbo Line (Urban Section)
The Rome-Civita Castellana-Viterbo railway is a regional railway line connecting Rome, Italy, with Viterbo, the capital city of the Province of Viterbo. The trains and physical plant of this line are in extremely poor condition, leading to the common online moniker, "Rome's Creepy Railway".
The line is split into urban and exurban services. Very frequent service operates close to Rome, and a much more infrequent exurban service operates to Civita Castellana and Viterbo. Enjoy this look at a very interesting operation!

Apparently when they ordered train cars, they purchased the “variety” pack. If you ride these trains, you must be on your toes at all times to make sure you find the doors, car steps, and don’t get your arm chopped off in those guillotine doors when they close. The trains do get you there , but be aware of all the quirks.
I'm from Rome and I used to take this line a lot from Flaminio to Saxa Rubra, where the national TV (RAI) offices are. It's amazing how that looks stuck in 1980 even in 2020. Oh, and it goes even better where this line goes outside Rome and towards Viterbo: single track, tight curves, barrierless road crossings and even mechanical signals. It's a rare piece of railway archeology, almost better than the narrow gauge Roma-Giardinetti.
Reminds me of NYC in the 70s and 80s.
One of my favourite little lines in Rome, I always take this every time I visit! I don't really see it as creepy, more like an old friend who's seen better days!
To be honest, I love old trains more than new trains. They are just so fascinating
Those old trains with the folding doors and the folding stairs are fascinating!
When I visited Rome years ago our hotel was in the Parioli neighborhood which was not on the Metro line, so we had to take this train one stop down to connect to the Metro. Creepy, but in a fun way
DJ, thank you for these delightful videos. My only experience with Rome subways was when I was a boy of 12 in 1963 and I was so impressed with the precision of platform to subway floor clearances. I was familiar with Paris' metro and paying attention when you entered as there was more variability. You have a great ear and eye for the machinery which really brings these video experiences to life.
As a NYC subway rider, NONE of this is even
Great video! Really atmospheric.
This genuinely feels like a time warp, and it's still 1987 down there. Like surprised films aren't shot down there holy crap.
Oh how I don’t miss the NYCTA of the 70s.
Marvellous quality 😍
😀Very nice Video! Thumbs Up!👍
The rail system in Italy is awesome from my experience, the high speed lines are as good as anywhere in Europe imo, loads of really interesting regional lines too. It's a feast, love it.
Most Italian regional trains look horrible on the outside with all the graffiti but on the inside it's actually really nice.
The original „Rome‘s creepy railway“ video by Beno (4 years ago, 700k views) totally fascinated me, and I’ve been wanting to go there and check it out myself ever since. Finally did so on a 2-week, 3000 km Roadtrip across Italy back in May - this was by far my highlight of Rome, possibly even of the entire trip 😍😂
I used to take that line to go in downtown with friends back in the middle school. Thanks for posting this video.
Beautiful adorei favorite Rome
Love it
