Exploring Opposing Viewpoints

If you value truth, you must be willing to explore all viewpoints, including those which are opposed to your own.
"There is nothing that strengthens the ego more than being right... For you to be right, of course, you need someone else to be wrong, and so the ego loves to make wrong in order to be right."
- Eckhart Tolle
"Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't."
- Jordan B. Peterson
"In seeking truth, you have to get both sides of a story."
- Walter Cronkite
"If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end. If you look for comfort, you will not get either comfort or truth..."
- C.S. Lewis

The need to always be right is a huge burden. You only realize this once you let go of that need. Being able to admit you're mistaken is very liberating. I see it as an opportunity. Once I know I am mistaken I can start looking at what caused me to believe what I did and be mindful of similar scenarios in the future. Admitting I am mistaken and also admitting I don't always have the answer. I don't know everything and won't pretend I do either. I am mistaken and I don't know has prevented a lot of unnecessary confrontations.

Nada, Your insights resonates with my soul and insights gained from my life experiences. It's amusing that most people are afraid to question authoritarian systems of belief on so many levels of of our being. It's to scary to let go of the known and explore the unknown. I appreciate that you do not speak the language of organized religion and encourage viewers to explore, question and gain their own insights and awakening from within oneself. You inspire me immensely! I appreciate your channel. Warmest Regards my brother! Namaste.

Up to a point. You can respect someones beliefs if they reciprocate, but you don't have to study supernatural, spacemen, ancient alien, flat earth, prejudiced thinking etc. In this day and age, there are people pushing some really poorly thought out idea's. Respect the human. Be gentle. But don't be a doormat.

You make great points. But people have practiced this win-lose game of "who proves themselves right how many times" for such a long time that their first reaction has become to counter whoever's challenging their credibility. They might actually be considering your idea, might be changing their opinion under the surface. But they won't admit it. They make sure they win and you lose the argument in font of others regardless of what's actually going on in their head and what they might be learning. If you keep being the one to apologize, if you keep being the one who voices that he's changed his mind, you will also begin to question yourself. Personally, I'm humble with the humble, and senseless and stubborn and with the senseless and stubborn. People don't deserve to feel false victory if they're done nothing but make people feel false defeat.

What's difficult to do and absolutely necessary is to always ask yourself, "Am I the one who's full of shit?" You're going to be wrong over and over again and, at least in my experience the truth or the best solutions usually lie somewhere in the middle of what you think and what the other guy thinks. I make myself listen to people I despise most. There's a reason they get on my tits and it might be my fault, not theirs. I made myself listen to a three hour podcast with Ted Nugent and I actually learned a lot from it. He's an extreme Right crackpot but I discovered he really does know his shit about a lot of things. In the area of game management and nature conservation he is very learned with decades of real world experience. It's almost like there's two of him shifting back and forth between just good ol' Ted to a raving fascist lunatic. But its not about him. Its about me. My positions don't mean shit unless I'm willing to cowboy up and change my mind.

I don't think that it's so much wanting/needing to be right (allowing one into heaven) to which we're catering, but needing not to be found wanting - wrong and in dis-grace. There is a tremendous difference, here, between the two. To be found not totally right is not the same as being found to be failing, insufficient, incorrect, stupid etc. I once was "team-teaching" and the topic was pitch. "Let's see what happens to the pitch when we fill the soda bottle with water a bit and blow across the opening once again. What do you think will happen?", I asked my 6th graders. In reality, I was teaching how to form a hypothesis and prove it wrong (or not wrong). I listed the answers on the blackboard (remember those?) and was waiting for the smart-alec pupil to admonish me for not trying it out, when my team-teacher announced that he knew what would happen. He argued with me when I explained that we first know something when it's been proved one way or another. "You're ruining my credibility with the pupils, how dare you?", he scolded me in front of the class. I explained how important I felt this lesson was without someone declaring a fact to be true without any evidence. "Until the evidence is in, you are only stating an opinion," I lectured. He never spoke civilly to me, again. The children will never have forgotten that lesson.

An important statistic I believe would be the following perhaps to the situation. After all, this was programmed well before this place EVER came online. 1/3 of the humans are negative extreme 1/3 of the humans are more balanced in the neutral territory. The final one third of the humans have a positive mindset...of coarse every-one mostly is into free choice and yet we can see that this world contains PERFECT dualism...which comes from THE ONE also known as source. Programming PERFECT dualism took ALL of the best of the best to accomplish...it is near programming perfection or as close as beings could come to that balance. Guess which category you were programmed to pick at this stage of your life? The middle one of coarse, and FAR MORE in the middle than the vast majority for sure...neutrality allows you MUCH of what you enjoy ahead of the other two sectors mentioned. It is why you can debate with someone TO LEARN / SHARE instead of what normies often do which is destroy or bolster!

Your criticism of debates applies to our system of law. The object of all participants should be to find the truth rather than winning an adversarial contest. Thinking about it do you ever hear a debate where both parties are open minded - No.

I study Chinese culture. They have a big deal regarding being right regardless if it is true or not. Its more important for them to keep face, so to speak. Even a child will not tell his dad that he is wrong about the direction to a place, even though the son and the dad know that its the wrong way. The dad wants to keep face. And the son wants to show respect to the dad by not letting him know that he is wrong.

I absolutely don't need to be right. But I should be allowed to have my free speech without worrying of people being upset because I hurt their feelings because I'm stating my truth. . In today's world if you share your truth you'll be harassed by absolutely terrible instead of just talkingshit back. . I'm always able to admit my own times of being wrong. But within a debate or conversation with somebody who can't do the same it just seems futile.
