Exploring London's Pubs: Ten Pubs, Ten Stories (Volume I)

Фильм және анимация

In this video we’ll be looking at 10 London pubs, all of which have an intriguing tale or two to tell- including one that lends its name to an unfinished tube station, a bare-knuckle boxing venue and the tavern frequented by the villainous Bill Sikes... Cheers!

Once, about three lifetimes ago, I bought a little Jack Russell terrier off a geezer in The Town Of Ramsgate. paid £10, a pint, and few games of Rummy for the little chap. He went on to father three good litters and was my faithful chum for over 12 years. When he left me, I had him cremated, took him back to The Town, and put his ashes back in the water. I went inside and had a pint. I suppose it was better in the old days, London. People under 30 have no idea now. She was a lady, that old town.

Watch better way to munch one's way through my Weetabix than to watch another super Robslondon video.? For me as a proud friend of the channel, there isn't! But I worry that I may run out of this vital ether laptop companionship! Hope not. I will watch all the London pub series and dream of happier past times in the village pub and draughts of real ale. I find that the reasonably priced pint of Ruddles in a Tim Wetherspoons establishment better suits my pocket these days, though being part of a national chain they lack the character of many of your chosen pubs.. Keep 'em coming Rob. All your varied videos are really informative, enjoyable and so well researched and presented. Thank you. Rob 🤣

Great channel. Since 2008 Iv worked within an industry that solely services London pubs. The Hoop & Grapes, The Spaniard and The Grenadier are pub iv worked in hundreds of times. The One Tun Iv never been in but have parked opposite many times and walked past the Lamb and flag iv hurried past many times as well. The other pubs Iv never heard of. People asked me if Iv been in to every pub in London. There are hundreds of pubs Iv worked in and hundreds Iv never stepped foot in. London is a huge town.

Another one to add to your list - Williamson's Tavern, Groveland Court, off Bow Lane, EC4. I worked there over 30 years ago. It used to be the residence of the Lord Mayor of London, and is believed to have been visited by King William and Queen Mary. Wrought iron gates at one end of the courtyard are said to have been given as a gift of the royal couple. In the 18th century, it was purchased by Robert Williamson and converted into a hotel, then later a tavern. The Williamson family died out in the early 20th century and it was sold. The current building is mostly from a reconstruction in the 1930s. It is said to hold the oldest Excise Licence in the City and it's located on a spot that is reputed to be the exact centre of the City of London. And it's supposed to be haunted. I was often there on my own late at night before locking up and never saw anything paranormal though!

Half a dozen friends and I would always include the Lamb & Flag in our Friday night pub crawl of approximately ten pubs, after a few years we got to recognise a few faces and would always chat to Tony the bouncer. One Friday night we were quite refreshed, my mate Ozz had the whip, most of the notes were gone and about £30 was left in pound coins and silver, in walked a chap who was asking for spare change so he could get a bed and evening meal at the shelter down St Martin’s in the field ( near the Chandos ) he told us he needed £8 to get a room, a shower and a meal so we all added a few quid the whip and Ozz gave him the lot - he must of walked away with about £50 bless him.

There really is something extra special about London's hostelries. I guess because most have such a rich lengthy history, usually involving plenty of skullduggery and nefarious activity. I remember visiting The Grenadier many, many moons back, lovely welcoming venue. There was a particular ale, the name eludes me, which absolutely blew my socks off, lol. But then I've never been much for ale or lager, more of a whiskey drinker. I was meant to have gone into Soho at the time of the Admiral Duncan bombing, another favourite pub of mine back in the day, but I couldn't go at the last minute ...... what an escape I had! But in the true spirit of London folk everyone rallied round and supported those affected by that horrific event, which is what Londoners are renowned for. Great video.

Is smoking still allowed inside pubs? I haven't been to UK since the late 1980's and most pubs allowed smoking then, but just wondering what the current laws are about smoking inside pubs? I was always bothered by cigarette smoke and went to pubs that weren't too overly crowded or had good ventilation. Some pubs I went to had a folk music club that met once a week, usually in a separate room or upstairs and I remember those were designated non-smoking areas.

It’s not to do with money it’s to do with the atmosphere of the city , which as you know is wonderful. Next time try to visit the Battle of Britain monument on embankment , An airman are running out of the monument in bronze as he scrambles. Visit The Red Lion pub nearby 48 Parliament street, where Churchill sometimes went. London never flags or fails. Especially because of Canadas support. All the best.

While 'The One Tun' maybe the inspiration for the pub, 'The Three Cripples', inspiration for the name itself surely came from much further out - 'The Three Crutches' (pronounced 'Crooches') at Strood, in Kent; which Dickens would have know well from his perambulations around his home at Gad's Hill, Higham.
