Exploring Lancaster, PA and Amish Village. A County Tour

On this tour we travel all around Lancaster County to experience the diverse scenary the area has to offer. From the countryside, to Mennonites and Amish life, down to the modern Lancaster City, and ending at the river lands, Lancaster is a giant mixture of fun, history, and adventure.
[EDIT] - Herr house is pronounced (Hair). No matter how many takes, my NY accent over threw the final sound of Herr. Also, LANCASTER is pronounced (LAN-kiss-ter).

Thank you for correctly identifying the Christian Herr house. While a Swiss/German may pronounce Herr as Hair, all the locals say Herr. My only complaint is that the video is too short. It would be enjoyable to listen to you elaborate on each of these sites. Thank you. PS: Next time in Columbia you must visit Wright's Mansion.

Watching this from Lancaster in north England where this place is named after the Quakers emigrated from my neck of the woods to America and settled alot of land in that area. Cool fact the term Dinosaur came from Lancaster England 👍 we were also know as the hanging town as it was the second highest place for hangings other than London

My Mennonite ancestors were enticed by William Penn (donated the land in Pequea Valley - Lancaster county - South of the City of Lancaster along the Susquehanna River and Pequea creek) and Ben Franklin his emissary to convince the Mennonites who originated in Switzerland and removed to Southern Germany to avoid Religious Persecution. They came to America in 1710 and the Hans Herr house was built in 1719 (not the 1800's) Enjoyed seeing the story of Lancaster but please get your history facts correct. As a descendant and Family History Genealogist I have learned so much about my home state and it's history. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh where many of the descendants of the original Mennonite community ended up - some after leaving the Mennonite life.

Cool video and story. But living here in Lancaster I find the mispronounced name Lank Caster difficult to here over and over. It's really just one word Lancaster.

I think that’s one of the fun things about the area is the pronunciation of Lancaster. Throughout my comments section it’s been pointed out that locals pronounce it Lan’kiss’ter which is the traditional British way of saying the word and closely resembles Lancashire. This also goes back to the original Pennsylvania dutch pronunciation. The way I pronounced it in the video is from my New York accent where we seem to put a heavy emphasis on a portion of a word, LANcaster, ex: Wuah-ter (water), Caw-fee (coffee). I think I mentioned it in the Herr House portion of the video. But I’ve been a Pennsylvanian resident now longer then a New Yorker and this is still one of my biggest missteps from early on since I wasn’t aware of the unique local pronunciation.

I want to visit Amish country with my two girls…stay in lodging as the Amish do etc. maybe a tour? Idk. I want to put cell phones etc aside and show my kids people still live and are happy without all this extra stuff.

I live in Virginia now, but I am from Lancaster. The #1 thing that irritates us is not pronouncing our county correctly. If you want to see Lan Caster, go to California. Otherwise, we pronounce it Lank-ister. Period

No worries there is a whole section in the comments where we discussed the Lancaster / Lan-kiss-ter pronunciation. It sparked up a similar debate in my video of Wilkes-Barre with heir pronunciation. I think I also added it to the info section.

You said at 4:25, "Pennsylvania makes up 63% of the Amish community for the country". That's not true. There are more Amish in Ohio than PA. And there is a large community in northern Indiana. PA can't be 2/3s of the country's Amish community!

I probably said that by mistake. I know that Ohio and Pennsylvania are always neck to neck. When I first dod the research PA had the largest by a couple of 100s, the OH took over. I did an updated 2022 census and looks like PA is back up by around 3k worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/amish-population

It's only a 20 minute video-it is hard to mention everything. Before I moved here, my family and I used to visit for vacation for a weekend about 4 or 5 times a year (for a couple decades) We knew nothing about James Buchanan. And not everyone is into trying different foods (that's not a put-down, I am just saying that there is so much in Lancaster County, that not everything can be covered. Also, different things interest different people) For instance, when I visited, I loved the fact that there was a used comic book shop in the basement of a church (the owner sold it recently at the age of 95 or so). I could find MANY rare comics there (I don't even mean valuable ones, but ones no one has heard of). There were also several used book stores where I could find things I rarely saw (this was before the internet, so no ebay or amazon to use) like the Dana Girls, and other old series.
