More likely Krill and plankton for the baleen whales. If you look closely you can see a sort of milky streak through the water, those are plankton, Krill and tiny copepods, tiny fish too. This looked like a Brydes whale (the only baleen whale that stays all year in tropical and sub tropical waters, global warming of the water is allowing them to go further south).

Tip of the North Island is where you should have gone. Bigger and more plentiful Kingies and Snapper. Lots less fishing pressure up there. Places like Cape Maria Van Daemon, Sprits Bay, North Cape etc. Monster fish up there.,

Hoping you can get an almighty Gurnard in NZ Gido. Not many kiwis will say they don't like a feed of them although you do see the very occasional one caught in WA

I shudder to think how much this trip is costing. Something tells me that no matter what you would ask for they would try to accomplish it. :)

So Brydes whale is a tropical to subtropical whale and is limited to a minimum water temperature of 16º, seeing it in NZ makes me wonder if climate change has warmed the water enough for them to venture further south. It is a baleen whale and therefore only eats plankton, krill, tiny fish etc

The the east coast of northland has water temps over 16C almost all year round due to the east Auckland current coming down from the tropic's. Right now SST is about 20C in the bay of islands .
