Exploring Horten in Norway | Vestfold og Telemark 🇳🇴
Horten is a city and municipality on the western shore of the Oslo Fjord in Vestfold og Telemark County in Norway.
Horten is a Norwegian coastal town. Horten is located between Holmestrand in the north and Tønsberg in the south.
The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Horten. The municipality also includes the town of Åsgårdstrand and the villages of Borre, Skoppum, and Nykirke.
Horten was the only municipality in the then Vestfold county that was not merged with other municipalities in connection with the municipal reform. Horten is Vestfold og Telemark county's smallest municipality measured in area, but at the same time the most densely populated municipality in the county.
The town is named after the old Horten farm (called "Hortan" in 1552), since it is built on the same ground. The name seems to be the definite form of hort m 'bulge' (but here in a weak form, Norse *horti). Several hills and mountains in Norway have the name Horten (or Horta, femininum), and here it could be referring to the hill Brårudåsen lying in the middle of the town.
