Exploring Historic Rim Country | Gila County Special [Part 1]

The first day of my adventure takes me along scenic "Rim Road" to a number of historic stops. I'll visit a fire watch cabin, explore the territorial-era history of the Battle of Big Dry Wash, and enjoy some spectacular views -- before finding an incredible spot to camp along the edge of the Mogollon Rim.
Tune in Friday, 9/15 @ 8:00 A.M. to catch Part 2 of the series, which features more hidden gems of the Mogollon Rim and an incredible camp on the remote Promontory Butte.

Great video man, all 'round. I enjoyed it. Just a little note on that battle: The south side where the plaques are is actually the area where the battle was initiated by the cavalry scouts. The battle took place on the other side of East Clear Creek, or the "Big Dry Wash", to the north where the Apache had their camp and were planning their ambush. Rifle fire was established at the plaques site area that allowed the cavalry to maneuver, crossing the wash below and up the other side on both flanks, to encircle the Apache. That is why this battle was considered a perfect execution of encirclement. Chaffee was actually given command by his superior because he was already on scene when he arrived, and the battle started. It's really interesting, the whole lead up to the battle, during, and after - they found bodies of those Apache that had scattered a distance away in crevasses and caves all around, even well after the battle. Don't think to find much of anything looking around. There isn't much to see and nothing identifiable like a bulwark. It's been gone over by ranchers for a century, and metal detectors in the past decade. The latest of which I accompanied on a tour of the site a few years back. He had walked the whole area and recorded each bullet found and its location, identified it, and the rifle used. That's how we know exactly where the the movements were and the main locations like the Apache camp and pony herd were located. I only mention all this for anyone who deep dived this battle, like I did. There is surprisingly detailed info in the official Army battle report from individuals that participated, tho avoid Tom Horns account he wasn't even there. If you want to know more start with the Battle of Cibecue.

Thank you so much for this info, Mike! What great additional insight to have on the battle that took place there. I mention your comment in a Q&A video that will be released tomorrow morning. I appreciate the time and your contribution to the content. It's interactions like this that allow KZread to be such a positive place. Thanks again for watching!

Very good. I have all the first printing books written by the soldiers that were there fighting and yes forget Tom Horn as he did not participate and very often lied to promote himself.
