Exploring Gene Ontology GO annotations tools and resources

Ғылым және технология

The Gene Ontology (GO) resource is the world's most comprehensive source of information about the function of gene products (proteins and non-coding RNAs). The GO consists of two main components: an ontology of terms that describe biological phenomena and annotations that connect gene products to ontology terms. In addition, GO develops tools to help researchers make use of the GO in their analyses.
This webinar will provide an overview of what GO terms are and how they relate within the structure of the ontology. It will also describe how annotations are created and highlight some of the limitations of the GO. Lastly it will introduce some freely available bioinformatic resources used for accessing the GO, and methods used in GO analysis
Who is this course for?
This webinar is suitable for any researcher in life sciences with an interest in molecular biology. No prior knowledge of bioinformatics is required, but an undergraduate level knowledge of biology would be useful.
Outcomes
By the end of the webinar you will be able to:
- Explain what the gene ontology is, and its limitations
- Explore where to access GO annotations
- Identify tools and methods used in GO analysis
This webinar was recorded on 2nd March 2022.

Thanks for the presentation! I've been doing GO and other functional analysis of proteomic data for several years, and still came by several useful tips and tricks in this video :).

i have a question, when we do a go analysis what is the background set?

Thanks for the comment. The background set are all the genes that they could have detected in the experiment. So for example, if assaying proteins only, then exclude the ncRNAs. If you need any further help, reach out to the team via their helpdesk: help.geneontology.org/

@18.27 isn't specific parents gives to broader children, since arrow is pointing towards biological processes?

Thanks for the comment. As you go up the tree the terms become less specific. ‘Biological process’, the root node, is the least specific term in that branch of the Gene Ontology. We hope that helps.
