Exploring England | Bicycle Touring UK
We thought we knew a thing or two about climbing but the steep hills of Devon have us gasping for air. While searching for a camp spot we have an intense moment with a herd of young and inquisitive cows. We have a wonderful meeting with two friends and they provide us with some valuable life advise. A deep dive into England’s past provokes the imagination and brings history to life… all that in typical British weather fashion ;)

Editing has not been easy lately but we are now back at it again continuing our new series Bicycle Touring the UK. Exploring England has been a great joy with so many layers to unravel and learn from. What are your experiences travelling here or maybe you are planning to go somewhere in the future? Have a great day! E&M

Hello both of you. Nice to see you have chosen England, it's landscapes can, for me, be less awe inspiring than other places I've lived in in other countries, but, there is a definite quaint reassuring resting peace to the countryside here. I wanted to ask, are you wild camping your way up the UK and if so what has your experience been like this far? Thank you. Take care Benjamin

Too bad the luck you had with the weather.. I was there for a month in July & August, rode from Wick/John O'Groats to Edinburgh then Gloucestershire to Lands End and only got rained on once, for just the last 30 minutes into Glasgow, in 2 weeks of riding!.. Scotland was the best with beautiful empty roads and the Devon hills were the worst!..
Hello lovely people . I live in Exeter ,Devon and spend a great deal of time alone cycling the lanes and off road routes pondering the meaning of life . I wish I knew kind and gentle people like yourselves . I am 58 yrs old and have been searching for so long . I really enjoyed your footage and easy going attitude ..thank you and best wishes . Bill

Hello Bill - I do likewise, in Devon. Wanna go for a friendly ride?
I love the way cows line up like that, all curious and each getting a good view. Reminds me of a time when I was younger, wandering through fields and coming across a field of cows. My friend and I lay down to see what they did, and to enjoy looking up at the sky. When we sat up, the cows had formed an observational semi-circle around us. They have such huge soft eyes. ❤🐄
" We come in peace. we are vegetarian " That's wonderful. Thanks for the smile today and thanks for another lovely video. You guys are my favorite travelers.

They were not cow's. They were bullocks. Male bovines that have been castrated. A cow is a mature female bovine that has given birth. Calling all cattle "cow's" is the same as calling all people "women".

But to add, lovely video. It's great to watch people like this doing something they love and sharing some great moments along the journey.
Ah, the cows! Part and parcel of our wild-camping trips! Never had trouble with them. In my experience they are very cautious and will always avoid the tent. We've woken up on mornings to see cows just outside the tent staring at us. We don't go out of our way to find them, but they find us! One came up to eat in front of me once and a calf once lay down next to me when I sat on a bench. I've always found them gentle and curious, but, yes, you wouldn't want to risk spooking them. I love them. We're vegetarians, too, so my gf always "tells" the cows they're safe with us!
Hi Guys, as an Australian who's just come back from 2 months cycle touring in Britain, I'd say it was wonderful. For sure there are downsides but the countryside more than makes up for that. The lanes, bike paths and canal paths are such a joy to just wander along. I will definitely be doing it again, not expecting to see new things but to have the feeling of contemplative immersion in it's beautiful landscapes and history. Keep on riding and enjoying.

Well done getting through the brutal hills in Devon and West Somerset! Although we do usually get more rain than most, we have just had an extremely hot and dry and dry summer. If you had come during the heat waves those hills would have been unbearable. A tip for you cycle touring in Britain: There aren't many public drinking fountains but every church has a tap outside it, thank god :)

Good to see you in Devon. I know what you mean about the hill and valleys. I live at the top of one of those hills with views over towards Crediton and most routes on my bike involve going up a steep hill to get home. E&M, so glad to see you both back at your cycling passion. Yes, the UK, land of my forbears, calls out to me to return and pedal far and wide over there. The previous trip I pedaled from Schiphol Airport down to Orly Sud could not have been more of an adventure. That was years ago. Now I'm after a factory fresh KOGA World Traveler so that means starting in Holland I suppose (seems Alee's review of it made an impression). In the meanwhile I'm wishing you both tailwinds (as a roadie should) and a beautiful balance of the spiritual unfolding and the challenging. And I can tell you that the bike trip(s) of youth settle in so fondly remembered down the road of life from where I stand. Cheers and fair weather to you both.

Nice to see Uphill appear on your video - a familiar location from my childhood as I grew up near there, and a little gem of a place. You were right to be wary of the cows in England. My friend got trampled by them, he was black and blue afterwards. The stats say they cause 80 people a year injuries and 2 or 3 deaths a year. Cows can get especially spooked when you have a dog

Get the fantastic bicycle
Nice to see you both in South West England, and I look forward to your trips through Wales. When cycling in Wales I would consider going north after Pothmadog, instead of east. You will still see Snowdonia and you will take in a historically (now) important site. Head north to Caernarfon. As you know the UK has a new King, and it will soon have a new Prince of Wales. The investitiure and crowning of the Prince of Wales will most likely be held in Caernarfon Castle. This castle is in a good state of repair and is worth a visit. Further along the N Wales coast you will pass Conway castle, as well as visiting the castle (fee) you can walk around the ancient town walls (free). Then 5 km further you have the town of Llandudno, which is a beautiful Victorian resort town, with a large headland called The Great Orme. You can travel up the Great Orme on an old cable railway, with fantastic views at the top. From there you could make your way along the coast to England, or head inland a bit. As you go west you can cross Offa's Dyke, which is a linear earthwork built in the late 8th century, it divides the old border between England and Wales. Wherever you go, have a great and safe ride.

The cows were very funny (although I guess they weren't really on the spot!) because they would follow you when you did not look at them, and then they would immediately stop when you turned around and looked at them, like they were pretending they did not move at all :-) As in the children's game called "Red Light/Green Light".
