    And just like with real bears and real owls, my reaction goes as follows: Lizard Brain: "Get away from it, dangerous animal that will shred you to pieces." Monkey Brain: "But I want to pat it's fluffy head and scratch it's tummy, it looks so cute." Seriously, the picture at 4:17 almost melted my heart with how adorable they look, especially the cubs.

    I remember back when my group first started our campaign. We were on the hunt for a Manticore that was terrorizing a nearby village. A tavernkeep gave us information to find the monstrosity. He didn't give us much, but it was enough. We head out and found some tracks. None of us were proficient in Survival (yet), so we all rolled relatively low to tell what the tracks came from. So we assumed it was the tracks of the Manticore and followed them. We entered into a damp dark cave, where our wizard and barbarian were completely blind, but my tiefling brother and I (also a tiefling) could see just as well. As we went deeper into the cave, we saw a lump of fur. I poked it, just to see if it was still alive. As any intelligent person would, I rolled stealth afterwards just incase. Nat 20 for that. As the creature woke up, we discover it is not a Manticore, but actually an Owlbear. After about 3 minutes of my group's shit getting pushed in by a "random" Owlbear attack (winkwink), we realize that Manticore's don't even live in caves. We also come to find they live in mountains, which of were miles away from us. It was a very upsetting day.

    @@Eric_The_Cleric it's more that it's funny. I watch a few "things you didn't know" style channels and its very common for people to drop videos that are on the same subject around the same time. So mr.rexx did his owlbears a few days ago, so unless hes working around the clock its unlikely exploring had enough time to plagiarize it.

  • @Eric_The_Cleric

    @Eric_The_Cleric

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@NoESanity I mean, I have edited videos like the ones Exploring does, and he's been doing this for long enough that this video shouldn't take more than a few hours of honest work to make. Since Owlbears are such a popular thing in D&D, there is a ton of art. Rip that from the internet, slap the images into the video editing software, *maybe* add some transitions, and then do your voiceover and boom. You got a TES video. Scripting and research probably will take the most time, but not more than a day's worth of work and certainly not more. That's probably the part that would be plagiarized anyways, and if it is then the video takes even less time to compile. No shade to TES, honestly. I quite enjoy his stuff and watch it in the background while I do other tasks, which is what I find his videos are good for. It's just that the reality is that anyone with any sort of editing experience knows that his videos shouldn't take very long to make, which is why I brought up the idea of plagiarism. Maybe these two channels do actually work together, maybe one copies the other. If TES does, that's scummy, but honestly it's all publically available information about a public game that's been around for 40+ years. Maybe he gets video ideas from Mr. Rhexx and just tries his hand at the subject. As I said before, though, I don't watch Mr. Rhexx so I can't be 100% sure if any part of his videos scripts are ripped or not. I guess it is funny, though. There just seems to be some shade thrown at TES for something that could be completely honest (even if not completely coincidental) video themes.

It's really tough to get any good info on it since 95% of spells, monsters and lore is written in obscure magazines and compendiums scattered throughout all editions.

  • @CascadeFreak
    @CascadeFreak3 жыл бұрын

    It's cool that owlbears made it into other series/games too, including Dauntless, a rather recent game. Only difference between D&D owlbears and the Dauntless owlbears (Shrike and Skraev), is that the Dauntless ones usually feed off of Aether, throw aetheric projectiles, and can fly inherently, like the Winged Owlbears. The Shrike relies on brutish force, while the Skraev will freeze opponents before attacking usually. I'm not sure of any other games I might of heard of that do Owlbears (i'm sure that ages old game that has smart gem goblins has them too)

    First campaign ever, and on the 4th session we investigated a kidnapping by hobgoblins in a large cave in the forest. Ran into an owlbear which nearly killed us until we finally felled the great beast. I walked over to the creature's horde and dug around looking for anything of interest. Lo and behold, a single egg remained. I cared for it as my own, egg slung in leather across my chest (I was a bare-chested dwarf barbarian) until finally, he hatched. On one adventure with the baby, we encountered and freed a sealed being of great power who chose to help him grow into a young adult, and thus be rideable. Only he didn't mention that now the owlbear had an Int of 7 and could telepathically speak. Thus was born the legacy of Peliax the Mighty, and his rider Durlag Ironmaster. Our conquests were fearsome indeed. Best. Companion. Ever!

    Hmm. Here I always thought the bears were going after the bee larva for their protein, not the honey. Still not sure if I believe that is what is going on tho...so I will have to read about it now! Just makes a lot more sense that they would want those sweet, fat & juicy baby larva. I know they look for grubs ov other insects & bugs or what have you. I have watched one dig for moths and beetles in a large gravel run where an old river bed had dried up some time ago. He ate the bugs for hours too and never seemed to mind us watching.

    if we were to apply real-world logic to the Owlbear, its origins would have it likely be a descendant of an owl species that reverted back to it's Mesozoic-era features, like how whales went from water-faring fish to land-faring quadrupeds then back again to a water-faring mammal, this creature would be an ancient terrestrial lizard evolving to modern owls then reclaiming the land as this beast. (also the winged variant could never fly; it'd need enormous wings to lift its body and it could never consume enough calories fast enough to offset what that size and effort would cost)
