    Drow are my favorite . When I do an evil one I don't go full evil. I play them like this . Evil just in the sense that there hardly anything I wont do or anyone I wont betray/deceive to get what I want or for profit/power but still keeping some morals. For example cruel but not completely heartless. I may have little to no empathy for people but like animals. I might decide to remain loyal to my companions if they have earned that loyalty but it takes ALOT because even other drow often backstab eachother. I might be convinced to save someone in distress ...for a price. The "right thing" isn't always good or evil but whatever makes me the most money or meets my ends and every chance I get I will be trying to decieve and manipulate literally everyone .not evil for the sake of doing evil but doing evil things to survive/ gain an upperhand Because that's how drow are raise. Every now and then ill play a drow who fled the under dark rejects lloth and lives a life of good (pulling a drizzt)

    When I was 16, my father had just retired from the military. We had moved into a house we were renting. Occasionally, my father gave me the task of mowing the lawn and edging the lawn. I hated doing this because, up until now, we had always lived in military housing. I wasn't used to this at all. So I start to mow the lawn, and I realize at one point I am reaching the property line between our house and the neighbor's house. For me, it seemed reasonable to stop. My father came out and saw that I had stopped, and began loudly chewing me out (he was a drill sergeant in the United States Army for three years, so... It wasn't great). Grudgingly, I began to mow and edge the section of the neighbor's lawn that was adjacent to ours. It wasn't much (imagine the width of lawn when your driveway is on the side of your home that is closest to your neighbor's driveway. It was probably about 6 to 7 feet when facing the homes in terms of width). I grudgingly did it. As I was finishing, I got a little bit of a surprise. The neighbor, a very old and elderly woman, came out of her home. I am assuming she saw/heard the one-sided argument between sixteen-year-old me and my father, but she walked right up to me and profusely thanked me for mowing and edging this rather tiny portion of her lawn. She then handed me about $10 in cash. I tried to politely refuse, but she wouldn't accept "no" for an answer, so I graciously accepted it and thanked her. I mentioned this story, because later on I went into Waldenbooks and asked them if there was a book they would recommend in the fantasy genre. The store rep had told me she had a fantasy novel in mind, and took me over to the appropriate section of the store. The book she told me I should read was "Homeland" by R. A. Salvatore, the story that detailed the beginning of the life of the drow elf Drizzt. The way it detailed the society and how it functioned, the way it described the near impenetrable blackness that was the Underdark. I was so hooked. I would stay up until 1 and 2 a.m. reading these books while still in high school, knowing full well that my parents wanted me to get up early to walk my sister to volleyball practice. For the longest time I was hooked. I thanked the lady for the money she gave me, but I never thanked her for what that money led me to discover. Thank you. So very much. P.S.: I am a bit drunk now, so if there are typographical errors... 😋

    For the little comic I'm making for myself, I slightly changed the drow to make them more complex than slavers and sexist: They're absolutely collectivist in society, but each Domain determines the kind of society in that realm. Lolth's Domain is more politically inclined and use sly methods to gain power, Vaerhaun's Domain is more based in slave trade and bloodshed. The best slaves come from His kingdom, while the best politicians come from Her's. Men and women have the same CR rating in Vaerhaun's Domain due to his belief in equality, but Lolth has the most powerful female clerics and the weakest men. The Drow under Lolth actually fear and love her, seeing her as a stern mother figure that punishes bad children. She gifts her people with a blessing of enormous power if they show her genuine prowess in something. Others are eaten if they are non satisfactory to her. The more she favors you, the more spiderlike you become, with "High Clerics" having four arms, and the males she likes becoming driders. (Also she low-key is an alcoholic and is going through a custody battle with Corellon but that's besides the point).

The dark eldar waste their slaves as a form of sport. Only reason they haven't gone extinct is because they have Mary Sue levels of abilities and technology. The only good the dark eldar do is point out that it isn't just humans who can be likened to the hindmost part of an unclean quadraped.

    My understanding is the blood sacrifices, matriarchy and worshipping of weird gods harkens to the more backward, savage times of mankind. Dark elves in warhammer fantasy is like drow but are not matriarchal. Modern fantasies usually draw inspirations from existing social structures, not really a latent dominance anxiety

    As far as i can tell most evil factions in fiction are of a patriarchal structure. To provide some examples: In the lotr there are no evil women, there is literally only male orcs and other baddies. In Got yes there are several evil women in the later seasons, but earlier season are dominated by male villians as well, Tywin, Ramsay, Lord Fray... Matriarchies are used to spicen things with their rarity, to give character to a faction. Got nothing to do with the writers associating females with evil, goddamnit, how could anyone even get such an idea?

    Jesse Berg Cause one of the most “successful” female leaders was also one of the most War happy leaders.... ever heard of the queen of England? (the older ones not the contemporary ones) they were the ones who started quite a few bloody battles and wars, that’s not to say that kings are innocent in comparison however there is a significant and notable violent streak when it came to the queens of England during the British empire’s golden age

  • @MatthewSmith-sz1yq
    @MatthewSmith-sz1yq2 жыл бұрын

    It's always funny to imagine just how utterly inefficient drow society is, and how quickly it would collapse without divine intervention. Such an incredibly violent and chaotic society would need a huge portion of their population and time devoted solely to either killing others, or preventing themselves from being killed. This would have the effect of making conflicts even more costly, since so much time and resources would be invested into preparing for conflict and committing it. You could claim that this issue could be resolved with slave labor, but there's an issue there when you don't have automation. The best example I could think of would be the ancient Spartan society. Basically, the whole reason Spartans became renowned for martial skill was out of necessity, and a hilarious spiral of the threat of slave revolts. You see, so much of Spartan society was devoted to warfare, that they didn't have enough people to do things like grow food to feed everyone. Thus, they bought or captured slaves (called Helots) to do all of this labor. But now they needed an even stronger army to keep the slaves from rising up. But now, since they had a bigger army, they had even less people to do things like farming, meaning they needed more slaves. More slaves means you need a bigger army, a bigger army means you need more slaves. Round and round it went, until the city of Sparta became a horrifically dystopian society designed almost entirely around producing capable soldiers, just to terrorize the Helots to keep them from revolting.

On that note don't trust your back to one even after convincing him/her because they tend to be a little backstabby and will happily kill you after taking whatever you used to convince them. In other words they won't honor agreements unless you are lolth herself, and hope you don't get found our if you are pretending to be her or her emissary.

    "drow metal is degraded by sunlight, sometimes to the point of disintegration" already I can think of some uses for this. imagine, drow-metal photography! you just make a flat metal plate (or even a metal tape, like a "film"), expose it to sunlight, and the more light hits the more metal crumbles, and voila, photography in the Forgotten Realms. it could even be magical in that it only works with sunlight; not with artificial light, like a fire or maybe light based on non-solar magic sources (or whoever invents electric lighting here).

    Not dissimilar from the Dark Elves of Elder Scrolls. Having essentially abandoned worship of the Divines, they instead worship a few of the Daedra. Who don’t necessarily instill the best of virtues. Although, I don’t think anyone would classify Dark Elves as evil, at least not from the get go. Fun stuff to think about.

The best option to escape Lolth and Drow Society is to run and somehow make their way to Skullport where the followers of Eilistraee are and join them or ask for help. Eilistraee being the only good Diety in the Dark Elven Pantheon. These guys specialize in hiding from Lolth and redeeming other Drow who feel the same way.

    Interestingly, the Drow lore has seen a recent and significant update! There are now unfallen drow and they are less evil. This is rather good - because the lore about them being "cursed with dark skin" has some uncomfortable real-world parallels and comparisons. It also represents the way players actually depict drow - often with far more nuance and complexity.

    It's actually not new, it was just never given much attention. The existance of non-evil drow has actually been a thing for a long time.
