That restaurant with the fence ( 8:31 ) where you took the pic of the castle is the old ex-barn of the castle. Queen Maria of Romania made it into a restaurant back in the days and it's been a restaurant ever since. They have great food and fancy dishes and really good tea, but kinda pricey, and the view inside is very beautiful. (coincidentally i just did my research about Bran this week for work so i know a bunch of random stuff about it :)) )

Nobody knows for sure which castle from Transylvania is in the Dracula novel. What we know for sure is that this castle has nothing to do with the prince that inspired the Dracula characted. And since other castles are more difficult to access and considering that you can't f*ck with tourists wanting to get a picture with some castle from Transylvania... there you go: 'Dracula's castle' NOT! Since 2006 it's privately owned by some douche from Austria: Dominic von Habsburg and he's the one making all the money from visiting tickets.

Hey! From some research I did a few years ago while preparing a school presentation on Dracula (the Bram Stoker book), what I understood is that the only association between it and Vlad the Impaler (aka Count Dracula) is that he stayed there for a few days at some point in his life. The association with the book is, like you said, because the castle and the surroundings kind of look like the description in the book. I know it's a few months late but, hope it helps! :)

I am so sorry you got pulled into ecumenical tourism. There's just a lot of insecure religious people in romania that push that old stuff into the national tourism agency's agenda. Romania is actually modern, edgy and creative. Most people under 30 don't give a damn for our second rate history. We're focus on making the now, innovating and competing with the west directly.

  • @kratos521

Largo Di Milano wow you surely seem like a person who respects his country. What is wrong with our history? Why is it so second rate? People have died for this country just so that you can say that people don't give a damn about our second rate history?! Seriously?! Can you get more shallow than that? And what is wrong with appreciating our churches?! They are beautiful. And if you don't think so than that is not a reason to mock all are centuries of history and the opinions of other people. "insecure religious people" why would you say that. We all have a right to believe in what we want. I don't think anyone has picked on you for being an atheist or whatever. What makes our country special is that technology and history live together in harmony. And even if you don't think so it's no reason to talk about this country like that. I'm sorry but it makes me upset to see how little respect you have for others and Romania's history and all the people that have bled and died for it.

Largo Di Milano, I'm sorry to say, but you are just one of the many superficial and uneducated people in Romania who due to insecurity and inability to acknowledge that Romania is not yet a modern country, wants recognition from the West and shouts out loud that his country is great, but doesn't actually know why his country is considered to be great. Have you actually asked yourself why so many tourists come to visit Romania and what makes this country interesting and attractive? You're trying to convince people that Romania is a modern country and that Romanians can compete directly with the West on being modern? Why does it have to be a competition? And if it is, then Romania has certainly lost it big time. In what level can Romania compete with the West? Does it have a strong economy? Does it have a good and modern infrastructure? Is the country well organised and its people highly educated? And what is the standard of living in Romania compared to that in the West? Does Romania have modern architecture or advanced technology? No, it does not have any of these. In fact Romania is many years behind the western countries with regards to being modern and therefore this is not the reason that tourists want to visit Romania. But what Romania has, is a beautiful landscape, a great history of wars and religion which gave birth to an interesting culture that includes beautiful old architecture such as castles and bizantine style churches, as well as folk music and dances. The story of Dracula which is partly legend, partly fairy-tale, it is also based on local historical facts and it does give this region a mystical and captivating image. These are the reasons for which most tourists come to visit Romania and not because it is a modern country. But these are the exact values that you don't appreciate. So please accept and love Romania for what it is and what it has to offer.

History of Vlad the Impaler a.k.a Vlad Dracula Most scholars believe that author Bram Stoker based his evil count Dracula on a real-life 15th century prince of lands in Wallachia, Romania. Vlad Dracula (Vlad Son of the Dragon) or Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), as his story has come down through history, was a terrible man and a savage ruler. His brutality primarily against enemy troops consisted of having them sit awkwardly on stakes with sharp points and, as their leg muscles gave out, the point of the stake would impale them through the length of their body. Thus, he was nicknamed Vlad Tepes, which means Vlad the Impaler. However, impaling was not his only method of torture and murder. He was as creative as he possibly could be. People also knew him to boil his victims or cut off their limbs and other body parts. Additionally, Vlad mutilated organs, skinned, scalped, or had people eaten alive by animals. Bram Stoker took note of Vlad’s name, Dracula, and used it for his character. Vlad acquired the name Dracula because of his father’s name, Vlad II Dracul and he was in a secret society named The Order of the Dragon, for the purpose of fighting the Ottoman Empire during the Crusades. Hence, Vlad II took the name Dracul, which means the dragon or dragonist. As noted, Dracula means son of the dragon. Actually his fortress was Poienari castle but he is mentioned of ruling for a very brief period in Bran Castle also. We romanians consider Vlad Tepes a.k.a Dracula a national hero, defending this small country against countless attacks from the Ottoman Empire , we don't care about the vampire myth :D

Sorry man, it was just an innocent comparison, I lived there for a while , and Your weather was "wet" and windy, as it in Bucharest this summer. For us, this is something new. The weather on this planet is getting more of a puzzle each day. During last winter we had spring, during spring we had winter, now during summer we have the autumn. Some specialists should find a scientific explanation and make it public fast. People die burned alive in Greece and in floods in Romania. No day without a serious summer rain. The land is saturated with water. Floods are making life impossible in some of our regions. Some rivers caused serious floods, and what is worst is still to come.

Hey! The inspiration behind the character was a Romanian leader or voievod known as Vlad Țepeș or Vlad Drăculea/Dracula better known as Vlad the Impaler (his father was Vlad Dracul-Vlad the Dragon->loose translation; who got his name after being received into Ordinul Dragonului-The Order of the Dragon, hence the nickname. I'm guessing in those days the 2 words had a similar meaning. Medieval times were strange :) ). So, I think Stoker just thought that the nickname was cool. As for the castle, Castle Bran, from what I know, belonged to Vlad the Impaler's family. It was originally given to his grandfather. I think that the novel, together with stories of this charismatic, but ruthless leader who fought to defend his country at all cost+the position and feel of the castle were the perfect combination to make people believe it's the real deal.

Actually "Dracula" was a derivative the uncultured masses got from "Draco". In Romanian, there is no word for "dragon" (the European knightly order Vlad's father was a part of), but it does sound like "dracul", which translated to "devil". Funny enough, people liked to poke at their politicians back then as much as they like today, so having an insulting nickname was cool.

tiger cat don't dare to blame Romania because of a traitor king who stole the country gold, money and other precious stuff and he moved in Switzerland. And USA and România was alied in ww2 with Russia too, Hitler had 130.000 romanians captured and put them in prison and Russia helped kind of to get them back and românia had a goal to get back Transilvania and Russia said that will give us back Transilvania. And BTW have you know that Mihai I HAD 18YO when world War 2 came? Can you lead an army at your present age? Guess what no matter what happened in ww2 we still have own country where we live, and before that Mihai I first time was king in 1927-1930 and he was born in 1921 so he had 6 years and he was king for 3 years lol and nobody invaded country cuz they was scarred of a 6yo king :))))) let the jokes on other side Mihai I (ex king of România) died last year at 96 yo. So dont blame Romania, România did a lot of things for humankind, Romania made a lot of things that you use and don't know where they came from... A Românian invented arrow shaped plane, fountain pen , 3Dcinema, insulin, anti-aging cream, cervical cancer screening test, reaction engine, quadrocopter, the ejection chiar, BRIDGES over water, so still blame Romania for smth they did? What did your country for humankind? or Compare Romania achievements with other countries, you all says that Romania is poor country or etc.... But nobody knows our history, cuz of what gopsies? Each country has gispsies.... Sometimes gipsies are good for community some of them work on cleaning streets, help construction of roads, even collect bottles to put them on recycle to get money from them so yes we all have good parts and bad parts. One more time Do Not Blame Someone because what someone did how can be when I blame you for smth that your grand grand grand parent did a century ago :). I'm romanian and I'm prowd. No matter what. And remember grecee it's a big country and they borrowed money from other country 2 or 3 times to pay ppls salary, and idk the for for it when ppls stops working cuz of 60+ yo. România (not rumania, rumenia, romani) still on their feets.

Romanian folklore is full of legends tying the vampires to the Bran castle. It is historically documented that Vlad Dracula visited the castle at least a couple of times, though he never actually lived there per se. He probably moved in after he passed away and became undead.

Great b&b room and also amazing shot of the castle! Love this place and totally want to visit there one day! :) I read online about the connection of Vlad and the story says, - "This character is often confused with Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), sometimes known as Vlad Dracul, who was a Walachian Prince with a castle, now in ruins, located in the Principality of Wallachia. Because Bran Castle is the only castle in all of Transylvania that actually fits Bram Stoker’s description of Dracula’s Castle, it is known throughout the world as Dracula’s Castle. Chapter 2, May 5 of “Dracula” describes the Count’s castle as “. . . on the very edge of a terrific precipice . . . with occasionally a deep rift where there is a chasm [with] silver threads where the rivers wind in deep gorges through the forests." So - definitely fits the description :)

Bram Stoker who wrote Dracula was an Irish author who visited Whitby back in 1890 and found most of his inspiration for Dracula there. Before he wrote the book he had met a Hungarian writer and traveller called Armin Vambery, who told Stoker stories of Eastern European folklore and superstitions, likely where his background started for the book. I don't think he ever suggested that Castle Bran was Dracula's castle, I think just the location he created in the book, people just kinda assumed and Romania jumped on it. Can't blame em. so did Whitby! Try looking up Varna in Bulgaria, that's where he sailed from and tried to get back to. They probably have Dracula's ship or something! Big Dracula fan lol xx

I am a sommelier and I have traveled throughout Romania buying wines for export. As for the many castles, there is actually no link. It is just to attract tourists. Nevertheless, it is a fun adventure))) Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia is the inspiration for the fictional Count Dracula. He was born in the city of Sighisoara and other castles are also associated to his reign. Poenari and Hunayyadi immediately come to mind. As for Bram Stoker, I think it is safe to say that his wonderful tale is a complete fabrication.

I am from Romania, right from Brasov actually ^_^ happy to see you enjoyed the city. The legend of Dracula was actually moved here because the real story was about Elizabeth Báthory from Hungary. She was bathing in virgins blood because she realized that made her keep her youth somehow. The writer couldn't write about her or that place so he just chose this castle because it looked similar. I learned this from the first Romanian school that is actually in Brasov. Hope this helped.

You are correct, In reality it is one of several castles linked with Dracula. The uncle of a friend of mine used to run tours in Romania in the 1970s and he needed a castle that was easy to take buses to and talk about Dracula, so he chose castle Bran as the one to link to Bran and Dracula. The castle was built by the Teutonic Order in a a small period when the King of Hungary allowed them construct castles along their eastern Border to help protect against nomads moving into the Kingdom (nomads who were escaping the Mongols). The Teutonic Order were then expelled from Hungary after they started building castles in stone, and only the King could do that. In this case the original castle was wooden and got destroyed when the Mongols came through Transylvania

I was there at Castle Bran myself. The Lonely Planet Travel book on Romania states that Vlad Tepes (Dracula) was imprisoned at castle Bran for one day and night, nothing more. I guess Romanian tourist agencies advertise Bran as Castle Dracula because it is much more intact than the real fortress of Vlad Tepes, which is actually Cetatea Poenari (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poenari_Castle), which is not too far away from Bran. It’s but a ruin. Poenari Castle is much more “Dracula-esce” than Bran and I even got a real bat from there enshrined in some transparent polymer-glass in a casing that very much resembles a sarcophagus ;-).

It’s true that Vlad Tepes, aka Dracula, never used this castel as his headquarters, but it was part of the chain of defense for that county (Tara Romaneasca) before Romania was unified in a country. He is associated with it for pure commercial reasons, as it is easy accessible (his real castel is far north and very difficult to access) and near Brasov and the capital Bucharest.
