Exploring & Decompressing with Oil Sticks

I was having quite a day, so I broke away to play in the studio to clear my head and ground myself. My kind of therapy! Oil sticks, which I knew as oil bars years ago, have come back into my life thanks to a client and, in this video, I show you how I work with them. Now I think they’re great. Do you use these as part of your practice and, if so, what do you think?

I abandoned cold wax and oil almost a month ago and also oil sticks. This inspired me to return to oil sticks as I have discovered that sticks and all types of “crayons” are an essential part of my mark-making artistic process. Having moved indoors to an air conditioned atmosphere the oil sticks are firmer that’s they were and so not as smooshy and therefore more pleasing for me to work with. I am still not a huge fan but happily playing and exploring with them. Thanks for the inspiration 🖌️

Glad this inspired you to explore a little further. I wasn't too keen at first, and even this time around, it took me a bit to figure out how they can work in my practice. Now I'm glad I took the time to understand them. Good luck and enjoy the process. Who knows where your studio play will lead.

How wonderful to see this, thanks so much. The Paul deMarrais oil sticks look wonderful, I checked out his website too. Will be great to see demo on edges too. I have one oil stick but thinking of investing in a set. I primarily create tonalist paintings. Thanks again, this was great!

I really like the idea but my oils sticks are decades old and more crust that soft inner centre. I do however have some gouache paint sticks so got busy with them. I soon found that a spritz of water kept them moist so I could add and mix colours, the catalyst wedge worked well but fingers were better! So satisfying!!

loved this....i've been using Paul's oil sticks for a while now, i also like them better than RF partly due to the smell....i find RF had a stronger smell....silly perhaps, but they also seem less expensive...and he is a great guy to deal with :)

Very informative! I have oil sticks but didn’t know how to use them. Sometime would you demonstrate how to use soft pastels in your work and how to seal them once used in a painting. I have tried and the spray varnish makes them look like small specks instead of the way I used them (smooth) on the painting. I tried workable fixative the same results. I know artist use them especially in abstract.

Great. I hope you start to experiment with them. Let me know how it goes. As for soft pastels, I don't really have any and haven't worked with them for years. Unless you mean oil pastels. I do use oil pastels - see a video about I work with those here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/loalzLZtqpufZNo.html. I don't use fixative for them. I keep them between sheets of glassine or wax paper or frame them up.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m inspired to try this. Do you varnish these small paintings on paper? Or any other finish you use on them?

Thanks Linda. I don't plan to varnish them. Unlike oil pastels, these will dry. I'll store them between sheets of glassine to protect them but that's it. Appreciate the question.
