Located above the river Aterno in a remote gorge (Gole di San Venanzio) a few kilometers north of Raiano in the Province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo is the fascinating Hermitage of San Venanzio.
Constructed in the12th Century with some 15th Century additions the hermitage of San Venanzio is named after the saint, born in 238 in Camerino, who escaped following persecution and then remained in Raiano, Abruzzo. He lived a life of penance where today the hermitage dedicated to him stands.
The hermitage is anchored into the rocks by a system of arches straddling across the river Aterno where the gorge narrows. Before the main altar of the chapel is a balustrade that leads to a “Scala Santa” dug into the rock leading down to the lower level to a grotto identified as the site where the body of San Venanzio left an imprint while he prayed.
The rocks on which San Venanzio placed his body have become the destination of pilgrimages and places of lithotherapy practices. I had severe backpain when we visited so I tried out some of the lithotherapy practices as you will see in our video. The back pain has now pretty much subsided… Could it be a miracle or is that just a coincidence?

Situato sopra il fiume Aterno in una remota gola (Gole di San Venanzio) pochi chilometri a nord di Raiano in provincia dell'Aquila si trova l'affascinante Eremo di San Venanzio.
Costruito nel XII secolo con alcune aggiunte quattrocentesche l'eremo di San Venanzio prende il nome dal santo, nato nel 238 a Camerino, scampato alle persecuzioni e poi rimasto a Raiano. Visse una vita di penitenza dove oggi sorge l'eremo a lui dedicato.
L'eremo è ancorato alla roccia da un sistema di arcate a cavallo del fiume Aterno dove la gola si restringe. Davanti all'altare maggiore della cappella si trova una balaustra che conduce ad una “Scala Santa” scavata nella roccia che scende al livello inferiore ad una grotta identificata come il luogo dove il corpo di San Venanzio ha lasciato un'impronta mentre pregava.
Le rocce su cui San Venanzio depose il suo corpo sono diventate meta di pellegrinaggi e luoghi di pratiche di litoterapia. Ho avuto un forte mal di schiena quando abbiamo visitato, quindi ho provato alcune delle pratiche di litoterapia, come vedrai nel nostro video. Il mal di schiena ora è praticamente diminuito... Potrebbe essere un miracolo o è solo una coincidenza?
