Great video mate. I grew up outside of Newcastle NSW, and we would ride the bush around the old Richmond Vale steam railway line. It has three tunnels, with two that are accessible to ride. The floor of the tunnels were no where near as nice/flat as those tunnels. It is an eerie feeling when you are halfway through the tunnel and turn the bike off and experience the dark and silence. That steel plate you picked up sits on top of the wooden sleeper. The rail then sits on top of that plate, then the spikes are hammered into the holes in the plate into the sleeper which locates the rail in the correct position.

There you go! Yeah I guess considering this rail line isn't nearly as old as the Richmond Vale line, its held up a lot better. I knew it'd be worth asking, there's always an old head with the knowledge to learn from. Thanks for your comment mate.
