Exploring ABANDONED PLACES in Gary, Indiana. What happened here? | Skoolie Life Vlog Ep 20

#abandoned #garyindiana #artwethereyet
Skoolie Life Vlog Episode 20: We returned to Chicago to visit dear friends that hold a special place in José’s story. Then onward to Gary, Indiana where we came upon abandoned places that we HAD to document.
Our curiosity was sparked. What happened here? Why is Gary Indiana almost entirely abandoned? What we learned teaches an important lesson...

About ART WE THERE YET 🚌🌎
Art We There Yet is a project co-created by artist José Luis Vílchez and songwriter Cora Rose. Our mission is to create art inspired by the Americas, and to give back to communities along the way. Aboard a school bus converted into an art and recording studio (a tiny house skoolie bus conversion), we are traveling 30,000 miles from Alaska to Argentina, touching 23 countries of the Americas over 7+ years! We create art and music that highlight the beautiful people and landscapes of the Americas. And we provide murals and workshops in schools and communities that lack access to arts funding. Because ART is meant to be SHARED! ❤️🎨🚌🎼❤️

Gracias! Sadly, I see a country that appears to be in a rather steep decline. Home prices, rents, energy, fuel, food, and so much more are helping to add to the increase in homelessness. When I see abandoned buildings like those in Gary, it reminds me that the decline is real.😢

Hello Cora and José, it has been great to see you rejoining with your friends. It's a shame to see the ruins in Gary (and imagining how much waste there is in a certain part of the world). It's so sad to see how little people cares about other people and about things that can be useful but are left there to rotten). So many, in the world, trash away perfectly working things just because they want the last model... it's a shame, and a pity. You an José, as usual, are super special! Love, Ale

Hi Ale, So great to hear from you again! Yes, it is a shame that we can't have better systems for working together, making sure everyone gets a little better cut of the pie, and also reusing/recycling what we no longer are going to use. So many people in the world have so little. Sending a hug from chilly Alaska! Cora & José

What I find so interesting about this is: in so many countries this would be a great place to start a new. Loving the cello.

Yes, it's such a shame that in Gary, the cost of even taking the building down is too much for the local government. It's a really tough situation. And so much that could have been re-purposed went to waste...

This is strangely beautiful. Kind of sad too. A place built for people to spend happy time and have fun and listen to music and dream, to be abandoned, defaced, mistreated like that, it feels kind of like abusing an old dog and leaving it on its own to die alone... So heartbreaking.

Yes, and the saddest part is that the community didn't want it that way. It seems that the reason so many buildings are left like that because the local tax base can't even muster the funds to properly demolish the unused buildings. Just sad, sad, sad all around.

Gary will never recover until the people remaining there, that caused the criminal activity are removed. I would love to have the ability to go to Gary with a large law enforcement presence. Save what building as truly of historic value and demolish the remainder. Create reasonable zoning withing the remaining city. Start business incubators within a few blocks of the lake front. Start a new downtown along the lake shore with trendy food and arts. Provide low, low cost housing for enough people as the area can house with whatever infrastructure is still in place. Open 1 single High School, Middle School, and Grade School staffed by only the best educators available. Provide them good pay and very, very, very low cost homes. I could go on and on but you get the picture and if you've ever served in public service, or local government, you would likely know that if you expose the rotten core of these services and replace it with people who care more about their fellow citizens than themself, you could turn this around.....or at least start it over.

14:20 You said "greed and racism," and it made me think, the racism is rooted in greed. The institutional racism persists to perpetually FEED the greed of people profiting from the MANY social ills caused by racism. The sooner we get back to love and respect, the better, but ALSO, stop giving dollars to fuel anything that causes/perpetuates racism.
