Jungle Habitat was an African safari theme park operated in the mid-1970s by Warner Brothers. Located in West Milford, NJ near the NY state border. Legends of patrons being mauled by lions in their cars and rumors of animals escaping into the wilds of West Milford abound, as to the stories
animals being left behind to fend for themselves and pray upon one another after the park closed in 1976. Some of these tales were true and many animal carcasses were left decomposing in the woods, simply abandoned for the buzzards to feast upon.
Even decades after Jungle Habitat’s closure, many artifacts of the park still remained scattered throughout the forest. Exploring the overgrown ticket booths, reptile houses, animal pens, souvenir shops and the little zebra striped safari cars became a new kind of tourist attraction for many urbex sightseers. And eyewitness reports of non-indigenous species, like monkeys and kangaroos living wild and free in the remote corners of West Milford still persist to this day - perhaps descendants of escapees from Jungle Habitat that made their flight to freedom way back when.

In the early 90s my friends swore they saw a kangaroo along Lower Berkshire Valley Rd in Roxbury…

I went there as a kid, our car broke down in the middle of it. I remember lions right next to the car, it was scary.

I grew up in New Jersey and remember hearing about jungle habitat, then six flags Great adventure opened Great adventure and people went there for the drive thru safari park. When I was 17 I got a job at six flags Great Adventure.

My parents took me here as a kid but I honestly do not remember anything except the Jungle Habitat bumper sticker that graced my parents station wagon for years. I think (though could be wrong), that they just applied to any car in the lot. I do not see that my dad would have put this on.

They did stick it on every car in the lot. My dad was really pissed.

This place is like ten minutes from where I live lol, the town holds firework shows there still every year or so. The old parking lots fill up occasionally. The show isn’t held near the old attractions though it’s off in a field somewhere

The airport runway is where they launch the fireworks to avoid setting the woods on fire.

My neighbor smuggled two peacocks out of the park just before the shooting began.

Interesting that Warner Bros owned it. Was that the inspiration for Six Flags Wild Safari?

    Jungle Habitat pre-dated Great Adventure.

I think the opening of the Wild Safari at Great Adventure (It wasn't Six Flags back then) was what lead to Jungle Habitat closing.

@Sandra Carson-Price Poor management, horrible physical boulder-ridden environment to see animals in didnt help. The escapes put pressure on town to close it down and their threats to do so did them in.
