* Note that in this particular video, my main focus was on the sounds versus the performance, which explains why some parts may not be 100% technically accurate from a notes/chords standpoint. Also, I typically play all music by ear on this channel, so there are times I hear things "my way" which doesn't always line up with the sheet music online. But then again, online sheet music often gets things wrong too! I could find no sheet music specific to the exact piano, organ, or synth parts of this song which means we're on our own as keyboardists, and thus, I'm relying on my ear. 👂🏼

    @user-ql1pc7pi9x I agree with both of those things. Awesome song, and yes Joe is so funny. Love watching him get interviewed. It takes him a long time to get the words out, but he has a lot to say if you read between the lines. You can see he is a good guy through and through. He's not a fan of "computerized music" and likes to record things the natural way without quantizing and such. Whenever I hit the "quantize" option in Logic Pro, I think about how Joe Walsh would be frowning over that move. These musicians of this vintage are one of a kind for sure, and there are lessons to be learned from them...

    Love your content my brother!! Wondering if you got some instructional videos on the NS4 coming anytime soon. Ive learned so much about the synth just by making the patches you teach africa -toto etc... If so I can't wait.!!!! I need more! looking to know as much as I can about synthesis on tis board.

    @stevenrodriguez8219 Hey Steve! Thanks for your comment and for your nice words! I actually just created the main synth brass sound for Toto Africa for the NS4 and planned to have a video out for that, at least on Patreon and within the upcoming course called "Master the Nord Stage 4." If you're interested in in-depth training for the NS4, come to my website and sign up as a student. Then, when the course is released, you'll be notified and on my mailing list. I also plan to have a free course called "Synthesizer Fundamentals" for the NS4 later in the year (for free), but first, I have to finish the paid course, which will include over 100 individual training videos sprinkled with many downloadable sounds from famous songs along the way. The Pro course called "Master the Nord Stage 4" features in-depth setups, general tutorials, and pro techniques as to what a given feature is, why you would use it, and when. It also includes advanced MIDI setups and other adjunct info on many topics not covered here on KZread. We also have a private community where I answer individual questions personally when possible. There are a ton of free resources already available too for the NS4 besides KZread such as the Nord User Forum website where folks all over the world are willing to give their time to answer questions and even provide programs for the NS4. There are also several FaceBook groups where people are willing to provide their expertise, and you can be part of a specific Nord community all for free! So, actually, there are a lot of resources out there these days! Since you mentioned that you want to learn "Synthesis", I recommend a course (not taught by me but extremely excellent) called "Syntorial" where you will learn synthesis using a virtual synth from the ground up if you are interested in the skill of "hearing something" and then being able to reproduce that on a synthesizer. Thanks so much for the analysis, Marc. I love this track, and have Joe Walsh's pair of solo albums from 1977 and 1978 (including "But Seriously, Folks"). The sample of the riff was such a neat trick!! I was somewhat oblivious to how many keyboards are on this track too! My favourite moment though (bizarrely) is where the acoustic guitar kicks in (so not keyboards at all!).

    @MRFThorne - funny you mention your favorite part is when the acoustic guitar kicks in. That is one of the cleanest, and most crips sounds on any song and on any album. It's so tastefully done and appropriate for the song - a genius moment. I suppose that is part of what makes these songs so great. It's not just the chords or the rhythm, but also the "sound" and execution of the entire thing from a performance standpoint. In the video you probably caught me playing air guitar too, when the electric guitar kicks in later after the big synth keyboard break. Respect to Joe Walsh 👌🏻 🎸

    Loving this!! This was a very good breakdown of this sound. Working on duplicating some of the sounds from my Stage 3. This demo helps....................ALOT. Maybe for a future video you could demo A Sky Full of Stars. That would be a good one for the Pump Effect! Cheers!

    Thanks @johngaudette4664 Glad the video demo helps you out! This was a fun one to do, and it's a touch easier on the NS4 because of the scenes option. With the NS3, the way I have it configured requires isolating panel B and turning off the synth when it comes time to play the piano vamp at the beginning and the end. So, one point for the NS4 there. Regarding the suggestion for Cold Play, I like that. To be honest, for the next several weeks (months even), I'll be focused on creating the course "Master the Nord Stage 4" to get that going because that's where my priorities are and we have a lot of people in the queue (like you) who have upgraded from the NS3 and who want their master training for the NS4. *Also, here is my quick reaction and suggested approach to the A Sky Full of Stars:* 1) I would actually play the chords in real-time and not use the pump effect. That will allow you to perform the syncopated rhythm we hear with that figure for the piano. 2) I would turn on the EQ and set it to the "LP Filter" option 3) I would turn the Filter Resonance knob (in the EQ section) to 7. Note that this knob doubles as the "mid" knob. 4) With the Frequency Cuttoff knob (also in the EQ section), I'd start at 8 kHz setting and then morph that down with the control pedal from 8 kHz to about 700 Hz. 5) Play the piano figure starting with the pedal at full (8 kHz), then back it off slowly over time just like the song does. You'll hear a similar effect in the end, and it will likely put a smile on your face when you first hear it. I know that happened to me just now haha! 😃 Doing the above will partially achieve the "Cold Play filter effect" for that song while also letting you use the piano engine for the main sound. Alternatively (and this applies to the Nord Stage 3 only), you could set up a piano that is driven from the Synth engine instead but then set the traditional Resonance and Frequency cutoff in the synth engine in a similar manner. Then you would morph the frequency cutoff from there. Using a piano sound sourced from the synth engine gives you the added ability to adjust envelopes and provides a wider range of options for the filter. It has the disadvantage however, in that the pianos driven from the synth engine are not of the same quality/caliber that you get from the piano engine. A piano to look at in the Synth engine is the GrandPiano YaC7 stereo. Unfortunately, the piano samples for use in the synth engine are not available for the Nord Stage 4. Maybe they are coming? Hope all of this makes sense! Yes, this would make a good video lesson. I should do one for the course and consider something similar for KZread down the road.

    Hey Marc, this is kind of a late comment regarding an older video of yours where you explain the functions of the Boss FS-6 Dual Footswitch, and I was wondering if you knew if the Boss FS-6 could work without power like on the Boss FS-7 by just plugging it into the Nord Stage 3 or 4?

    Hello, a lot of questions here. It is possible to connect a Roland fp30 (88 keys hammer action) to my E6D? The Roland have midi out but it is USB B to USB A. If yes, what is the way around? Something that work like an adaptor from USB A to MIDI IN. Also, I already have a midi keyboard (working as a lower manual) connected to my E6D. But lets say, I take the lower manual and roland (with the adptor) to an "external device" and that device to midi in on E6D. Will that work? If they can't operate at the same time can I use them separately? For example, The two keyboards are connected to an new "external device" and when I press a button or flick a switch the lower manual stops working and the roland starts. Maybe that second option is possible. But I don't what I need to make it work. Can you help me?

    @cameirotorpedo5861 You ask some great questions here, and many people have had similar questions about MIDI from USB B to another board like the NE6. Also, many have questions about having two or more primary keyboards connected to a single keyboard like the NE6. You might regret asking about this after you read my email and realize what's involve haha! So, yes, you can do this. The harder part of your request is to make a "switch" that allows you to switch from one MIDI configuration to another. This is a BIG assignment as it involves a lot of different areas of expertise and understanding in order to pull all this off, especially if you are brand new to the world of MIDI. With that said, it's all possible; it's just a matter of how much effort and time (and investment) you are willing to put in to accomplish it. After having accomplished this however, you may feel really good about what you've learned once you reach the other side of the challenge. You'll also be far more aware of what you can do with MIDI and it could open up your world in other areas of your setup as well such as sending and receiving program changes and/or other highly customized MIDI setups. *Here are several homework assignments on the things you now need to learn and understand in order to prepare for this advanced connection scenario:* 1. Watch this video to understand how to convert USB B to 5 Pin MIDI and why this is a requirement: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYipmNWooZXQj84.html (note there are a lot of MIDI host devices these days). 2. Watch this video to better understand how you can connect two primary keyboards into one receiving keyboard: kzread.info/dash/bejne/foJprc6Jf7vAabQ.html (this was made for the NS3, but the same concept applies to the NE6). 3. Watch this video to better under your options on how to utilize "Keyboard To Low" on the NS6. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qoyqtdSIlsK9grg.html 4. Watch this video to learn how to use a controlling MIDI switchbox so that with a click of a button you can adjust your MIDI configuration in such a way to allow you either the Lower Manual or the 88 Key from either external primary keyboard. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3mFsJqDm6y0n7w.html (however this one doesn't have a physical switch button). This one on the other hand, has a switch button: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJ-autxuk7eckbg.html (both of these solutions provide programming MIDI routing as well as the "MIDI thru" option you learned about in #2 above). Oh, I also present the "MIDI Hub" box here with the Nord Electro 6 in fact, so this one will tell you more about this fantastic little box: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYV4mLpqm7mqops.html 5. Optionally consider enrolling in "Master the Nord Electro 6" course on my website if there are other areas on the NS6 you'd like to master. I don't have this exact scenario outlined as a single video, but I provide a lot of training about the board itself, including the "External to Low" option for the NE6. Report back with what you've learned and if you've decided to pursue this. Good luck! 🎹

    Looks like a lot of Sus2 chords during the main theme on piano??

  • @MyKeysToMusic

    @MyKeysToMusic

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Scott!! @luvjammin04 Yes, although I didn't study the piano part in depth. But the sus2 chords appear to give it that "country" aspect, I think. I was also limiting my playing to Am but I think they go to "G" somewhere along the way. There seems to be some debate with the chord charts for that online. I could have separated the piano part using a program called "Moises" which would have isolated the piano a bit more so that I could "hear" exactly what they were playing, and that would have helped. However, I didn't invest the time in that, instead putting all my attention on the sample aspects in the middle synth part and also spent some time figuring out the organ sound and the other synth sound, etc. Side note: With each of my videos, I have an internal debate with myself, "Do I spend another 2 hours rehearsing that part or go with it as-is?" Such as the life of a KZreadr to find the balance between what's important to perform in the video and where the emphasis should be. For example, in the video: "A Fifth of Beethoven" (kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4V_mcWlg5a4pZc.html), that one took 12 to 15 hours to program the sounds, rehearse the parts, perform the parts, edit, and publish. Yet there is no talking in that video, and it's less than 2 minutes! Then, other videos are 15 minutes long that I can do in 6 hours or less because there is no intense sound creation or complex performance required. Even though the channel is nearly 6 years old, I still feel like most videos I put out are a "Creative Experiment," trying new things and mixing flavors here and there to see what happens. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

    Hello @mikecampbell4349 I think the keybed is similar to the NS3 Compact. If you consider that crappy, then yes, haha... I find it good so far. I also think the NS4 brings things up a notch because it has the triple sensor, which the NS3 does not. I wouldn't the "triple sensor" feature into a deal-breaker issue, but yes, the triple sensor does appear to make a slight difference in expression - although it's hard for me to articulate that in a scientific or convincing way at the moment. @socasack Sorry to hear that. I would think the Stage 3 has a decent trade-in/resale value, and with the difference in price, you might not be too upside down swapping for the Roland or Yamaha. Ask 10 people which board they should get or which one is the best; you'll surely get 10 different answers. It all comes down to what you need and what resonates with you. Good luck with this. Swapping brands and learning "how the other guy does it" always means more work - but hopefully, a labor of love in the end. I think we are all striving to play on something that has us excited to use it. The main point of music-making is to have fun and scratch that creative itch (my opinion), so we do our best to have an axe that inspires us or at the very least, can get the job done and we walk away happy. 🎹
