The oldest preserved written mention of Benátky nad Jizerou dates back to 1052 when sources mention the village of Obodři, now part of the town.
In 1349, a monastery was built together with the adjacent Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The lords of Dražice died out in 1385 by the sword, and the town and the surrounding estate were then held by different owners. In the mid-1620s, the burgraves of Donín settled in Nové Benátky and built a Renaissance chateau on the monastery's site, which was destroyed during the Hussite wars. As supporters of the Unity of the Brethren, they tolerated the activities of the Brethren congregation in the town, where Jan Augusta also worked for several years. 1599 Emperor Rudolf II bought the estate, including the city and the chateau. He allowed the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe to set up an observatory and meet his friend and rival, Jan Kepler. In 1647, Jan of Werth, a prominent leader of the Catholic side in the Thirty Years' War, received the estate and added the north wing to the castle. The present-day appearance of the grounds was completed by the construction of the east wing and the church tower under the Count of Schützen in 1702. His successor, Ignác Sigismund of Klenová, as a lover of art and music, enabled the brothers František and Jiří Antonín Benda to achieve considerable success in composition and performance, especially on Prussian soil. At the same time, he had the castle park decorated with sculptures from the workshop of Matyáš Bernard Braun and František Adámek. After a brief episode with Prague archbishop Antonín Petr Příchovský, who redesigned the interiors in the Rococo style, New Venice passed into the hands of the Thun-Hohenstein family. Between 1844 and 1847, the young Bedřich Smetana worked as a music teacher in the family of Leopold Thun-Hohenstein. The last owner, Count Kinský, sold the essentially empty castle to the town in 1920. During the occupation in 1944, New and Old Venice and Obodrá were merged to form the present-day city of Venice nad Jizerou, which was later joined by the villages of Kbel and Dražice. The town became the natural centre of the southern part of the Mladá Boleslav region and currently has a population of approximately 7,000 inhabitants. Its area has increased considerably by incorporating part of the former military area Milovice-Mladá. I was surprised that with such unrenovated residential buildings, the streets are very clean. There's no rubbish. You get the impression that you are walking through a museum with ruins. Very cosy atmosphere.🖐️😊❤️🇨🇿

What a beautiful and quiet place!, Stunning views. The stone masons did an execeptional job with the sidewalk and street mosaic pattern installation in town. These always look good but this town had true craftmanship and artistry. The castle sgraffito is really stunning. The church bell sound was a humble but wih quality rarely heard. Very interesting history.

I' ve noticed a lot of beautiful towns in 30-40 kilometers from Prague. They are cosy, quiet, with picturesque landscapes and well-preserved architecture. Benátky nad Jizerou is not an exception. U nás je krásně! I když nyní, v létě 2024, se opravují důležité silnice. Okolo zámku je nádherný park, máme nové koupaliště, je zpřístupněný příchod k řece Jizeře, kde je možné se vykoupat, zaplavat si. Přímo v těch místech, zvaných Loděnice, se pořádají o víkendech vystoupení kapel z celé ČR, stačí se podívat na program. Město nechalo postavit pro děti pampreck, aby se mohly vyřádit na kole i koloběžkách, tento prostot navazuje na městský park, kde si mohou starší posedět a mladší mají k dispozici klouzačku, indiánkou provazovou vylézačku. Hned vedle je prodejna Billa, Penny, hotel s restaurací Bílý Páv. Na druhé straně Benátek jsou krásná místa k vycházkám okolo řeky Jizery a jejích slepých ramen - v potůčkách najdete říční mušle, hnízdící kachny všeho druhu, zarostlé břehy květinami. Toto zase navazuje až na Lodenici, před kterou jsou na této straně Jizery cvičící přístroje pro děti i dospělé, hřiště na odbíjenou v písku, prostor pro děti, možnost udělat si oheň na piknik...poblíž je menší skejtpark.. My jste se do Benátek přestěhovali a nemohli jsme udělat lépe. Je to malé městečku mezi Prahou, Mladou Boleslaví a Libercem, ze kterého je skok do Jizerských hor, v zimě dosažitelné lyžování do hodiny jízdy autem. Je tady hodně školek, 2 základní školy, vynikající hudební škola, Sokol, Mateřské centrum pro předškolkovské děti... Jistě, problémy tady jsou, jako všude jinde, ale my jsme tady spokojeni.

Ony uličky mají svá jména - například Tycho de Brahe, který tady žil a i o kterém je kompozice v zámku, , Viničná, atd. Máme rozlišené Staré Benátky - to je okolo Jizery, pod zámkem. Benátky jsou mokřiny, podle toho, jak mokro tam bývalo. Nyní jsou to stále Benátky, ale suché, s Jizerou. Okolo zámku, na kopci, vyrostly Nové Benátky, nejprve to byly domy pro šlechtu a pomocný personál, park, lesy a pole. Dnes se rozprostírá směrem na východ, kde se budují nové domky, nové silnice. Můžete se přistěhovat, parcely jsou ještě k prodeji !!! Abych nezapomněla, máme zde skvostný domov důchodců a novou dráhu na kola - BMX - pořádají se zde kola mistrovství Evropy, přijeďte !!! Skvělá atmosféra. A ještě spousta věcí, na které jsem zapomněla.
Je nutné zdůraznit, že je to bezpečné město, nemusíte se obávat pustit děti samotné na hřiště, do školy, ze školy, na kroužky sportu, do hudební školy. Jistě, i tady jsou "nepřizpůsoboví " lidé, ale není jich tolik, aby musel člověk s dítětem všude chodit. To je zde malá, ojedinělá, známá oblast několika domů, kam se nechodí a druhá na opačném konci městečka, kam také není radno chodit - oni ti naši tmaví "spoluobčané" jsou horkokrevní a drogy jim nejsou cizí. Ale zase jsou to známí lidé a rozumný člověk mezi ně nejde. Ale není to o obavách ve dne.
