Explore Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois (in 5 Minutes) | Liner Notes
Музыка
Part of a half imaginary plan to make 50 albums for the 50 United States, Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 Illinois was as ambitious as it was idiosyncratic.

Glad they explained the pun behind “Illinoise” I was really lost there

Glad they mentioned it was a Sufjan Stevens record, glad they mentioned Chicago was an urban environment... we could keep being this cynical but it gets annoying
@ElishaDavid

I think they actually missed the reasoning behind the title? I'm pretty sure the University of Illinois (the same one they're dressed as) uses "Come on Feel the Illinoise" as a huge part of their sport's chants. I don't think it really has anything to do with the song they brought up.
@plasmaearth1796

@@ElishaDavid i'm guessing that the song definitely inspired the chant but still the album cover is definitely in reference to the chant if what you said is the case
This album is a masterpiece.

"Simultaneously sweeping and devastating, symphonic and do-it-yourself..." Love this description. Love this album.

jmacflair my favorite description of the album came from a Sufjan interview with MTV. He said he wanted the album to be a mix between brilliant and a sixth grade talent show, which I think fit perfectly.
Such a classic album. This album is so special to me. Casimir Pulaski Day brings me to tears man :c too many memories and lost loved ones
This is a very special album to me.

so many tracks to cover on that one
This may sound overly naiive but despite the name of the album, the names of the songs, and the lyrics, it never quite clicked for me that this music was explicitly tied to experiences and history unique to the state. Learning a little more context re-frames the entire album. Makes me want to actually read the lyrics instead of just enjoying the sound of the music.
This album is a masterpiece. In my opinion, one of the best albums of all time.
you guys should do Funeral by Arcade Fire! please!
How could you make an Illinois "exploration" without even mentioning Predatory Wasp, the best song in the entire album?

Tommy Okuniewski I love those final lyrics “Still I got to the deepest grave, where I go to sleep alone”... It honestly makes the album standout so much more with his performance. I’m surprised that I can listen his 25 min song Impossible Soul many times without getting tired...

HOPELESS ENTERTAINMENT I love those lyrics and the song is so spare yet its mood is so captivating. "Impossible Soul" is the work of a madman. So much love and tragedy packed into it. A real journey of a song, nothing else like it

Noice McNoiceFace what about Tallest Man Broadest Shoulder? I seem to be the only one loving that song. Mainly because of the percussion by the end of the song and the part 2 portion was the best! PS I started listening to the album weeks ago as I went insane and listen to Impossible Soul numerous times and if you see the length you might hesitate...

I think you'll find that, as you obsessively listen more and more, the album will morph in your mind and new favorites will come to the foreground, rotating in and out kaleidoscopically because so much of the album is favorite-worthy.

@@hopelessent.1700 aye Impossible soul is easily a top 10 Sufjan track, only the weak fear the 25 minute length. Besides, it's all worth it just to get to Pt.5 of the track

As an Illinoisan, this album brought Sufjan to my radar over 10 years ago. And it's beautiful. It's exactly what Illinois is in sound form. (minus the political corruption of course)

This is by far my favourite album
Decided to revisit this album today and this video randomly appears. A nice compliment.
My favourite Sufjan album. Good choice Pitchfork.
I've never listened to any other album as much as I have this one by a long shot. It's the musical equivalent of damn good crack, but far more addictive and infinitely more worthwhile. There's an intrinsic reason to why he wears angel wings; this is pure and profound elevation.

im so thankful for sufjan
Brings me back to my senior year of high school. I had the biggest crush on him, what with all that talent and those obscenely good looks... sigh.. p4k making me feel like a schoolgirl, again 🤤... Seriously, though, it’s definitely not my favorite of his album’s anymore, but it was the album that converted me to a fan, and started this 13 year love affair I’ve had with his music. Sweet love for Sufjan Stevens! 🙏🏼🙌🏼🙇🏼♂️
