Exploitation of VFX Artists - With Senior CG Generalist Mark Woodcock | TVAP EP58
In this episode, I chat to senior CG Generalist Mark Woodcock about the exploitation of Artists in the VFX industry, following his recent and ongoing dispute with IXOR Visual FX.
Mark joins the podcast to enlighten us, for the purpose of informing and educating other artists in order to be aware and avoid similar situations.
We hope you find this episode useful, and would encourage artists to fight and speak out about injustices, to protect other artists from falling into similar issues.

Thanks for having me on the show! For anyone wanting simplified context of the events I described I will include the main bullet points below. It is worth noting that an issue such as this is simple to one extent but can become convoluted when discussing intricacies of what occurred without adding vast amounts of details. The base information is simply I did not receive half of my fee. - Nov 29th: Sign the contract which specifies only my name in regards to the fee with 50% paid upfront and 50% when my files are delivered. - Dec 5th: An IXOR staff member states he will help on the project. Other IXOR artists had already posted work and comments in the slack channels. (No discussions regarding contracts or pay). - Dec 6th: Two IXOR artists specify they will do the work for one section and I am told to focus on the other areas of the animation. (No discussion of pay or contracts). - Dec 10th: The boss requests I focus on an even more specific section. (No discussion of pay or contracts). - Dec 23rd: I deliver image sequence renders, final comp renders (including compositing another artists work into mine), 3d files, compositing scripts and all work completed for the project which is far beyond the scope of what was initially requested. My invoice 02 is sent to them with the file download links I provided. - Jan 8th: After sending a follow up email their finance manager states they used 50% of my fee to pay the other artists working on the project. - Jan 8th - Jan 29th: I continued email communication and at one point the boss stated a video call could be arranged to discuss the payment but they did not respond to follow up emails or the eventual video call I attempted to arrange. - Feb 14th: This story was briefly summarised on a LinkedIn in a post. - Feb 16th - 19th: Some brief correspondence begins with the legal owner and project supervisor but no resolution occurs. Hopefully by raising this topic for discussion other artists can prevent this form happening to themselves in future.

Blacklisting is highly illegal. So you theoretically shouldn't be worried. That said we all know that blacklisting exists nonetheless and it's awful. Good move speaking out about it. The less of these crummy studios are around, the better. We all know they pocket whatever flimsy profits or fake insurance claims they make and move on to their next grift.
