@ArtOfKillingTY The angles between the wheel flanges are clearly designed to pinch onto the cables on which they are riding. This ensures grip without resorting to rubber. Which might slip in wet conditions.

The pylon in the video has lines physically terminated at the tower at a common, vertically hanging insulator; the machine wouldn't work on the pylons that have lines that physically terminate at their own insulators--one either side--(held in tension by the cable weight almost horizontally), with 'jumper wires' hanging in a loop to maintain electrical continuity.

This technology is really good innovation for TL inspection. This improves a lot of safety. Kudos to the entire team. Has this been implemented at any utilities ?

Great idea. It looks precarious up there though. If there was too much wind it looks like it would fall easily. Maybe they'll add something to support it more.

Actually, there is not much to do. Just put a metal enclosure and metal wheels. As long as the body touch the wire there is no issue.

Wow, that's actually pretty cool and it looks kinda stable, but definitely the ability to transfer over the towers makes this realistic, plus using the center of gravity to aid in acrobatics shows that some one has been using "nonlinear thinking".

I would imagine there needs to be a tech to place this on the lines, and to maintain it, change batteries, etc.. not to mention a rather large database/servers for the line conditions.

Definitely this robot is moving on transmission lines with help of motors it has .but the magnitic field around the lines is too high that it can oppose the motors magnitic field . So its a wonderful engineering example in today's world.

very unlikely, I'm sure the frame and wheels are heavily insulated as to not inadvertently transfer electricity across lines or to a tower itself. It's probably powered by a LiPo or other common type of battery.

nope, there is very high electromagnetic fields that close that can be utilised, alternatively, the lines themselves are warm from the electrical flow which could be utilised

Are you suggesting the robot converts the heat of the power lines into electricity? Even assuming there is enough heat to pull this off, it would have to have something like a built in steam turbine to generate electricity, which it apparently doesn't.

electromagnetic fields are very different from heat. Robot could power from the magnetic field, like a 230vac to 12vac, coils have not contact with each other

Stop the electricity in a high tension power line? Not. US power companies "bare hand" and/or work on power lines while they are energized and have been doing it for decades.

I love technology, this is ingenious.. Though the problem with these developments is what it will contribute to the eradication of the middle classes. As we develop through technology, innovation and intelligence we are making jobs that are very important to the security of income from non innovators unstable which will have serious implications over the long term (20-60 years) I just had this thought, and the objective of this comment is to create food for thought for others. I am neutral.

Hello from 4 years into the future! I would think based on the increase in population, there is a higher demand for more power lines, and a higher demand to install them faster. So I don't think jobs would be going away, just jobs will transition more towards maintenance and installation, and less on inspecting.
