    Regarding the limited read/write cycles that can be done on SSDs, that will hardly ever be a problem in newer SSDs. The Samsung 840 EVO (primary TLC storage with an SLC "turbo" buffer) shown in this video should last around 50-70 years. Thanks for the video - it was very interesting :)

    I really find your videos informative. I switched to a 750gb Toshiba 84o EVO 11 months ago. I think though, I'll use a hybrid on my next system using the best of both technologies. I find media programs do not perform much differently in either and a large performance difference when doing complex computations. Thank You. I purchased this SSD because the price was extremely cheap compared to the size and specs of the drive. I use my system for many things including virtual drives, beta testing Linux and Windows os'es , coding, and 2 and 3D graphics so if I get 3 years out of this drive I'll be quite happy. Thank You for the new video.

    My corsair force 3 120GB drive is about 4 years old now and have been well used and it still works fine, it have not even started to use the over provision yet, which just in case people don't know is extra capacity that the drive uses when cells start failing. I now got myself a 250GB Corsair Neutron as i wanted a bit more space and now the old drive is being used as a scratch drive for video editing. What I did not know and found out from your video is that the bios need to be in ACHI mode to allow trim to work. I changed a 60GB SSD for a 240GB SSD, in fact the same make as I have got in a mates computer a few days back and noticed his bios was set to IDE mode, I am glad I changed it now, I did have to change some bits in windows registry to stop the computer giving us a BSoD. i am just surprised that the company who built the PC did not change it to AHCI in the first place.

    Is Samsung 850 EVO 120-250GB MLC or TLC? My goal is for my OS to boot and open like Google Chrome or Steam or something in less than a minute, but the cost should be at around $88 and $110. I noticed 120GB and 250GB costs is kinda a bit close to each other.

    Limited number of data write cycles and performance degradation with current gen SSDs simply isn't an issue in normal OS partition use. Even if you do heavy rewrites daily it's still not going to do much to your SSD and what little it may do to performance, it's still going to beat mechanical drive for years.

    Great video. I know very little about SSD's in general and was unaware of the difference between 1-bit\2-bit\3-bit. For a PC about to be built I probably would've just got a 840 EVO without really considering it but want to get a 2-bit drive if possible. Not necessarily for performance (don't care, I'm not benchmarking 24/7, I just want a PC that runs well and plays games well) but better longevity and reliability, which is the main idea I'm trying to build this PC around.

    Can you quantify how much longer a 2 bit mlc will last vs a 3bit mlc? Is there a specification on the spec sheet of the drive ie a samsung 850 evo or pro that indicates how many times a given cell can be written to? Does windows or the drive maker have a utility to warn the user of a imminent ssd failure when the drive nears the end of its life span due to the wear and tear of writing bits to the cells?

  • @ExplainingComputers

    @ExplainingComputers

    8 жыл бұрын

    +evadesc Such figures are hard to establish, and will depend on manufacturer, technology generation (SSD endurance is increasing all the time), and usage scenario. But it is perhaps worth noting that a Samsung 850 Pro has a limited 10 year guarantee and can (in theory) write and read 40 GB a day for 10 years. The Evo drives offer a 5 year limited guarantee, and I cannot find endurance info. I am not aware of any Windows software that will flag performance failure.

  • @ExplainingComputers

    @ExplainingComputers

    Mark Blake I would personally choose a Samsung 840 Pro; I have a 830 Pro in my main PC (and others!), but only because the 840 was not out when it they were fitted. I would upgrade a processor if you need the power, but not otherwise. So it depends what you are editing media-wise, and in what package.

    Mark Blake That i3 is not a quad core, but a dual core with Hyperthreading for quad core-like performance. As for your SSD upgrade, if you haven't already done it, go with an 850 Pro (or an 840 Pro per Christopher's suggestion if you want to save a little bit of cash). Either way, you won't be disappointed.

    I think according to the theory it will only improve the loading times of games, but it won´t improve the gaming experience itself. So to save money in not buying a 1tb SSD, you should get an SSD for windows and add and HDD for the games. I can tell even Doom 2016 loads fast in a mechanical drive, and an SSD would be too much money, but if you can afford it, go ahead :)

    I use my laptop for many things. From watching movies, surfing the web, and I run my design software on it for my sign business as well as for other things. I rely on it quite a bit. It has a 500gb HDD in it now, to which I am only using about 20% of. What are the advantages to choosing to exchange the HDD to an SSD or should I stay with what I have and move to using an SSD external drive for storing normal family things such as pictures of my children or clipart?

  • @ExplainingComputers

    @ExplainingComputers

    7 жыл бұрын

    Exchanging the HDD for an SSD would speed things up -- esp. making the OS and programs load faster. It would also reduce the chances of a HDD crash due to a movement/thumb of the laptop. And it would extend battery life. This said, using an external SSD to store files would give you a back-up copy (although if you fitted an SSD you could keep the removed HDD for this purpose).

    +evadesc Essentially, yes, by paying for the Pro you move from 3-bit to 2-bit. I am not aware of a consumer 10bit drive. Windows 8.1 and up will indeed automatically configure for an SSD as you note. The Samung Magician software also goes further, and lets you optimize for (eg) speed or lifespan.

    what's the difference bethen format a drive and defragment a drive,will i lose lifespan if i reinstall windows after reformating the drive?

    Defragmenting a drive re-arranges the data into contiguous blocks (in other words, it ensures that all of the sections of each file are in one place, and all the free space is on one place). This speeds things up on a physically spinning hard disk (as the drive head does not have to seek around so much), but will damage an SSD due to the large number of write involved as data is shuffled around. Formatting erases everything on a drive, and **could** involve writing every cell on an SSD, which would reduce its life a little (though probably far less than doing a defrag, which could write some cells several times). However, you could reformat a drive by doing a quick format (tick the "Quick Format" box in the Windows format requester -- which is usually on by default). This will, if you like, tell the drive that it is been erased, but will not write over the actual data (it will just inform the drive that the data is not there and can be written over when the space is needed). So a quick format will not reduce the life of your SSD. This said, if you really want everything on a drive wiped (say you were selling your computer, and wanted to ensure that the new owner could not recover your data), then a full (non-quick) format would be a safer bet.

    How long does an ssd last?

  • @Machariel00

    Current gen SSDs can last you theoreticaly 10 to 20 years or even longer. Obviously failure rates aren't perfect on every single unit but as Christopher mentioned in the video, your best bet is to go with Samsung's SSD that comes with 5 year warranty. That should say a lot as what Samsung expects their SSDs to last.

    It will certainly load the OS, programs and data faster. Most computers fitted with an SSD hence feel more responsive. I've never met anybody who was unhappy with an SSD upgrade!
