I’ve been to one Irish wedding in my life. In Killarney in 2019. I had heard all the jokes and stereotypes about Irish weddings and assumed that’s all they were. About three hours into the reception, I saw a man drinking out of a flower vase centerpiece, seemingly thinking it was a fancy cocktail. It completely lives up to the hype.

When I enquired why he wanted to know he said "Well...I come from Ireland, & 'social drinking' there is very different from the rest of the world!!" It still makes me chuckle!

When I went to the Oktoberfest, I went with three of my friends on a coach trip and we stayed at a hotel in the Austrian Alps. We were the four English lads, and there was a group of four Irish lads, and four Australian lads. The Aussies were absolutely full of themselves and decided that they wanted to challenge us and the Irish to a drinking competition. I wasn't interested, we weren't into the drink that much (aside from Neil) and we became known as the group that stank of weed, but the Irish took up the challenge without a shred of arrogance. We all know how this ends. The Aussies were throwing up and fucked off to bed while the Irish were swimming in a freezing lake. One of them nearly got into trouble, he had to sit in a warm shower for half an hour to fend off hypothermia. Naturally he was drinking in the shower while warming back up. The Aussie lads were a bit quieter the next day, like the arrogance had been sapped out of them.

As an Australian I'm ashamed of our behaviour most of the time, but especially when we're overseas. We're like the belligerent teenagers of the world, we think we know everything and can do everything, but in reality we're just awful. So, with that as a preface here's a couple of stories. My wife is Irish, and we have made many trips to visit her family in Ireland. On my first trip, my wife's father and brothers took me out to an Irish pub one afternoon, hoping (I think) to watch me be repulsed by Guinness and make a fool of myself. Unbeknownst to them I was no stranger to Guinness, having developed a taste for it years earlier, before I met my wife. Between 2pm and 10pm that afternoon I drank 11 pints, and kept up with them no problems. Needless to say we all walked home the long way that evening, and I was a bit average the next morning and hoping like mad that this wasn't a daily thing with them. At breakfast my father-in-law said "ah sure, we'd heard you Aussies fancied yourselves as drinkers, we were testing you yesterday, and we'll not be testing you again." I'm happy to say I passed their test, and it was back to a much more manageable 5 - 6 pints per day after that. What I didn't tell them was that the Guinness in Ireland is fucking DELICIOUS and I could drink that stuff all day, and have done on more than one occasion. The other story is more recent, and speaks to Australian reputation overseas. We were in Ireland again for a wedding (nephew was getting married), I'd been suffering with a terrible flu for a few days and the day of the wedding I was finally starting to feel a bit better so I thought the best thing to do was to do what everyone else does at Irish weddings and down a few. Late into the evening the groom and his mates had had enough of pints and were hitting the shots, and the groom very kindly asked me if I'd like to join them. This was many years after the 11 pints story so I was well accepted by the families. The lads were all drinking tequila, which I'm not really a fan of, so I asked if my shots could be Irish Whisky instead, and away we went, glug glug glug. Many shots later some of the lads were starting to look a bit green so to spare everyone any indignity I called it a night and went to the bar for a glass of water before heading to bed (I found out later it got very messy with fellas puking everywhere so I bailed just in time it seems). I waited my turn in the queue at the bar, and when I got to the front I politely asked for water, and the barmaid asked "Are you Australian?" (my accent gives it away). I nodded, and she said "well, you're far more polite than the last bunch of Aussies we had in here". OUCH. There are some places in the world I've been where I thought probably the best thing to do was to not say anything, because as soon as people hear the accent they instantly form an opinion which is not complimentary. I've tried to be as polite, kind, and well behaved as I can be, in some vain hope I can undo some of the damage that's been caused by my bone-headed compatriots. On behalf of all Australians, I apologise. Some of us are quietly spoken and thoughtful, and yes, some of us CAN drink. It's a strange thing to be ashamed of your country and who you are, but there it is. I just try to not be another obnoxious Aussie. Hopefully someone somewhere remembers me well from my overseas travels.

@@woopimagpie I've been to Ireland and yes the Guinness is wonderful. Don't apologise for your nation, I'm quick to take the piss out of Aussies but let's not pretend the English are a well respected bunch on the international stage. We have football hooligans and topless toothless idiots who shout insults at locals, many British people are a complete embarrassment. But we have lots of lovely people here too, and plenty who can handle alcohol, know when to call it a night, and aren't rude to locals when travelling. In my experience, Aussies are boisterous, they enjoy a drink and a laugh. When you combine those two things, often the laughs come at someone else's expense, and an Aussie loves nothing more than a joke at the expense of Pommies! My favourite KZreadr is an Aussie, by the way. Ozzy Man, I'm sure you know who he is but if not check him out. I lived with my Norwegian girlfriend in Oslo for many years, and it always amused me the amount of psychiatrists in Norway, pages upon pages of them in the phone book and to which she thought was perfectly normal. I found it very funny, perfectly understandable knowing her, but yet equally astounding........ with her continually insisting Ireland cannot be any different. Upon return to my home in Ireland, I lifted the 'yellow pages' and showed her - 7 entries. Just seven. She asked how that was possible, to which I told her if an Irishman has some psychiatric issue, he goes into a pub, tells someone, they tell everyone else, so the problem is gone. Hence, what do we need psychiatrists for! That's apart from the fact we Irish already know that we are merely one cousin away from utter lunacy to start with!

At my wedding, my in laws didn't want any drinking until after the ceremony, (they didn't want to see alcohol in the photos.) I was getting ready to walk down the isle, (T minus 15 mins) and my best man goes "Hey I guess your wife's family is on the left?" I replied "yes why" He said "where is your family?" looking up there were a few of my friends on my side but no family. I went around the corner to where the reception area was, and everyone of my family had at least a beer or glass of wine in their hand. My dad had gone behind the bar and started serving everyone. He saw me and said "There was no bartender yet so I decided to help out."

Saturday was the wedding and it started at lunchtime and we were still drinking singing and dancing till 4am. Sunday was another party with the bride and groom still there. Monday the bride and groom were gone but we raised a few glasses until the early hours singing and telling funny stories about them. It took me a month to detox and sweat the alcohol out of my system. The hotel must have made a fortune they even opened a small function room up for the kids and showed cartoons and laid on a free finger buffet and juice. Best wedding EVER I'll never forget it 🥳🍺🍾🥂🍷🍸🍻🥃🍹💃

They got really quiet and one said, 'You're really rude to each other!' We nearly died laughing as they quietly went home. Naturally, we started singing. The landlord was so pleased we were locked in until 4am. The English guys couldn't believe it when we turned up for work that morning bright and cheerful as ever. By ten am we were stuffing our faces with a grilled breakfast and pots of strong coffee. One of the guys said, 'Ha ha, so you do have a hangover!' and my mate quickly said, 'Ach not at all, we're just lining our stomachs before tonight's sess. Are you not coming?' Irishman living in Austria. Two of my Irish friends got married there a few years back, and the groom recounted asking the guy in charge of the hotel (for the reception) if they had enough alcohol for the guests. He was assured that yes, they had plenty. Groom then casually mentions that all of the guests would be consuming at least 15 drinks. He sees the whites of the Hotel manager's eyes who says, "I had better get some more in, then". They still ran out of beer that evening. Headed back to a hotel in town for the afters, and the very innocent bar staff decided that it would be a good idea to leave the bar at closing time with 200 Irish there, with the taps still on. Groom was presented with a bill for several hundred euros the next morning, which he managed to negotiate down 50 per cent.

I, an American Irishman and former bartender of almost 20 years, donated a kidney to my father many years ago. At that time I had a very similar conversation with not one, but 3 or 4 doctors. You see, donating can take time. From the first test to the time we actually did the transplant was roughly 3 years. When the first doctor asked me if I drink I asked "what days?" "What do you mean what days?" the doctor inquired. "Well, I only drink when I work." " You drink at work? Are you saying you're an alcoholic?" She was very concerned. " No, I'm a bartender. I only drink at work because I usually drive when me and the boys go out. I have the biggest car. But I can take a cab home from work for $8 with tip. So I only drink at work to avoid a DWI" " OH. Well, that's actually smart. Okay then, well how much do you drink at work then? " " Well, a couple shots. People usually buy them for me. Some beer, and about half a bottle. " Her brow kinda furrowed as she asked "half a bottle a beer?" "Um no,.. no...ahhh, half a bottle. Of the creature, you know." "The creature?" She was utterly confused. "Yes, you know, whiskey. The creature. About half a bottle." "Hold on, you drink half a bottle of whiskey, a couple shots and a maybe a beer?" " Ahhh, yeah. Yep. BUT, you know, that's like an 8 hour shift. So I mean really, it's not that much. it's only like 2 shots an hour." " Sir, that IS a lot." Now she was writing on my chart, or in her book, or I don't know, but that pen was moving, boy. I could HEAR the scribbles so I decided I better make it sound better. "Well, I mean, it might seem like a lot, but I only work 3, maybe 4 days a week. so it's not like this is an everyday thing." I could hear the pen letting out just enough ink to scrawl Three...to...fourrrrr...nights.a. week. "Um, okay, Sir. Well, let's just... move on a bit here. Do you do any drugs?" She lifted her face from the questionnaire page, chin fully up, squared off, and staring directly at me. "Nooooooooo. No ma'am. no. I drink too damn much for that. You ever mixed drugs with half a bottle of whiskey? it doesn't make for a good night."

When I had glandular fever I was seeing the doctor every week so got to know him quite well. After about five weeks I popped in he said hi I’m glad it’s you. Do you mind if I have a drink. He then took out a bottle of scotch and two glasses. Do you fancy a quick one as well? It wasn’t even 9.00am 😂. After that he always had a drink when I went in. I found out he was a raging alcoholic

Two (True!) Irish drinking stories: A co-worker told me that his grandfather died early on a Thanksgiving day. Rather than spoil the day of food, drinks and revelry, the family decided not to call the coroner. A couple strong brothers took Pappy - still in his pajamas and bathrobe, and pushed he in the chair up to his usual place of honor at the table. Celebrations continued as tho he was still part of the festival. I think the Irish have a different view on death than other cultures. My grandmother told me that as a young woman she went to an Irish wake. The fellow who died was displayed standing up in a corner with a beer in his hand. He was wrapped in festooned and everyone paid their regards as they felt he would want them. It turned out that the fellow must have been a Crazy partier!..

Scottish weddings are similar. My brother and his wife are from opposite ends of Scotland, we started the drinking in the Scottish Borders, and ended a week and a half later in Orkney. I honestly thought I was going to die from alcohol poisoning.

    1. Irish wake for my grandfather Joe Purcell with our Canadian Irish relatives was one of the biggest parties our subdivision has ever seen, people and length of time. 2. My wedding to another Irishman, lovely man. But the wedding festivities began on Wednesday morning for the Saturday wedding and ended Monday morning. I had an Official Bridal Beer Holder. The reception spilled over into the hotel rooms then the Coney Island restaurant for breakfast, then whiskey for some hair of the dog that bit ya, then hubby's friends harassing or teasing us and dancing with the new wifey, then back to parents to celebrate our marriage and say good bye to all the visiting relatives. 5 days. We're still here 22 years later.

At one point there was a fight and a 12 top wooden table was flipped over so I managed to sneak away. (I mean if I really wasn't ok with it I'm assuming they wouldn't have actually forced me...). I heard a *BRILLIANT* joke from one of my Irish co-workers about the reason *WHY* they drink so much. He said: *"Well you see when God first created the world he went missing for a week & all the Heavenly Host were in a panic at to where he was. Eventually St. Michael & St Gabriel found him in a corner of Heaven. Looking down over the clouds smiling at something. They ran over to him & asked him where he'd been for a week. & he showed them the Earth & said:* *'Lads come & look at what I just made! This place is gonna be great! It's gonna be full of contrast. For example Europe is gonna be very cold, but Africa is gonna be very hot. North America is gonna be very rich & South America is gonna be very poor.* *But come here & look at this.' & he then proceeds to show them Ireland. 'This place is gonna be great! It'll produce poets, scholars, artists, athletes, great warriors, statesmen & saints. & they're gonna invent a famous brown beverage. That's gonna be a cross between a food & a liquid. & they'll be famous for it throughout the world!'* *& St Michael said 'It sounds lovely Lord!' & St Gabriel said 'That it does, but Lord you said something about contrasts?' 'Aye' God said 'wait till you see the utter Bastards I'm gonna give them as neighbours!'* 🤣

My best friends wedding had 180 guests. He told me he bought alcohol for 24000 pounds(!), just to make sure it was enough. No bar, only bottles. Two weeks before the wedding I get a call from my friend and he says that he is going to get piss drunk in his wedding and asked me, kindly must I say, that he hoped I would help out. I am not kidding, but he rented a fucking lorry to pick up all the alcohol and it was loaded in and out with a forklift. It arrived about 15 mins before dinner, and the wedding couple arrived early after taking pictures, so my friend was there when it arrived. We and a couple of our friends stood together in the pouring rain watching the unloading, when the groom says with no sarcasm; "This is it guys, let`s go to work. If any of you remembers anything from after dinner until we wake up, you will have to pay for half of it." My wife stood right behind me, hearing and seeing everything. She took a step forward and said; " I`m going home, I`ll notice your work. Call me when you wake up." This was on saturday, I made the call to my wife on Tuesday... We rented the wedding band for 4 days straight... Can`t remember much, but had the time of my life!

Ireland is the only place I found myself having a board meeting - or part of one - in a pub. The meeting had either started in Navan and was moving to Dublin, or the other way round. I can't remember. half way along the road we suddenly drew up at a pub. Either someone wanted to use the facilities, or knew someone there, or had arranged to meet someone there: I can't remember. What I do remember is that we sat round this table and it seemed we were never going to leave. One person bought a round. That meant everyone had to. Someone would drink a little faster than the others and disappear to order a 'wedge' - an extra drink for himself that didn't count towards the rounds. Every now and then a new person would wander up, greet some friend, and then there would be another round. Everyone seemed to know the etiquette. Nobody stopped making sense. I can't remember how many cars, but someone must have driven the rest of the journey. It took me a few days to recover.
