Explaining Extremophiles with Pokemon

After going through a few Pokemon that can be called extremophiles, I share some of my own designs that might fit under the label.

FYI, the color/name 'vantablack' is officially trademarked (in the US). I'm not a lawyer, but naming a monster after vantablack could have a bit of legal issue, or should I say, drop you into hot water.

It's a shame that the only reference to alkalinity in Pokémon is in Gigantamax Kingler's Shield Pokédex entry, stating that its bubbles are so alkaline, that anything making contact will instantly melt. This shows that high alkalinity can be just as devastating to the body as the acids of the opposite end of the pH spectrum.

high alkalinity is usually more dangerous to organic matter than high acidity. Same Bases and some Acids just have unique features due to other chemical attributes. Like how usually Acids unlike Bases don't really dissolve Organic Matter but HNO3 uniquely does, to an extent that if a human were to fall into a pool of it they were to dissolve completely iirc.

Minior is definitely an extremophile. It lives in the upper atmosphere, usually in swarms, surviving the temperature and pressure extremes while feasting on particulate matter to survive and maintain its shell. After some time, the Minior pack becomes too heavy and they rocket down to Earth, losing their shells in the process and dying a few hours after the fact due to their core being exposed, unless they are shoved in Pokeballs (assumedly this is when they procreate, and the baby Miniors don the shell fragments of their parents to protect their own cores before rising up to the stratosphere to repeat the cycle. This bit in parenthesis is just headcanon though lol, extremely tangential and unnecessary Minior lore rant below) In the lore, it says that Minior are created from “mutated nanoparticles” whatever that means but it doesn’t explain how entire foot-long Miniors can aggregate consistently from billions of nanoparticles nor how this is a consistent enough process to make only five-pronged spherical Miniors and no other creatures nor how this process could possibly produce more than one at a time given the low density of the stratosphere and the low probability of this occuring, let alone creating entire Minior swarms. Unless Arceus itself divined that magical space dust create swarms of sentient magical space dust eaters in the stratosphere I cannot believe that this has happened as a result of natural processes. Even with the magical nature of Miniors there needs to be a consistent cycle if they are going to be common enough to be a daily Rayquaza snack, so I am changing headcanon in this case. Is it petty and pedantic and ridiculous? Yes. Does it bring me solace knowing how Minior are so abundant up there with an alternative explanation? Also yes

I actually have a very similar Fakemon to Nautigrade. It's also an astronaut tardigrade, and it's called Astrograde (astronaut, tardigrade, retrograde), and is a Bug-Psychic type. They have four arms, two legs, two satellite antenna that it uses to navigate towards water, a backpack made of wet moss, and a water bubble helmet, which makes it look like a cute alien astronaut, because it came from another planet. It's ability is Emergency Shut Down, which turns it into Traveling Form at half health. It's limbs retract into it's body, the backpack gets bigger and became a jetpack that sprays water, and the bubble helmet encases it's whole body in ice, also referencing cyro-sleep. Anyway, really cool that probably my favorite Fakemon maker had an idea similar to mine.

8:39 That ability is very interesting… I can’t really say if it’s overpowered or not because it strongly depends on a lot of factors in the game In the Pokemon games the ability would be absolutely broken, because there are multiple ways to deal passive damage that this Pokemon could abuse, even if it doesn’t learn the moves necessary its allies can, and then this Pokemon can just fulfill the role of unbreakable wall and win you the game There are also some moves that allow a Pokemon to attack during sleep And there’s Rest, which means this pokemon can fully heal and be undefeatable for two turns But if your game has different moves or combat mechanics this ability could be balanced as is I would advise for it to just multiply defensive stats during sleep, maybe double, triple, or even quadruple them, testing would need to be done to really establish a balanced solution, but this balancing idea only works with the Pokemon Stats system of course I hope this helps just a bit, otherwise I just had some fun, I love designing abilities and moves :D

@@youtubestudiosucks978Wake-Up Slap removes sleep status as well, but with how Comatose works (and a rebranding with a different status effect would work the same way), the pokemon doesn't actually have the status to remove it, but it's considered to have the status in the game engine for status chance effects so it can't gain a second non-volatile status (so things like sleep or frozen. Confusion and attraction and the like are considered volatile meaning they don't get a status symbol and can stack to a degree) and moves that require it like Sleep Talk, for Comatose with the sleep status, can function. So basically they get upsides of having a status without the downsides. Sleep would be freedom of using Sleep Talk and Snore without being restricted from other moves, etc

I've heard that flamingos are actually considered extremophiles, as they can live and eat in pools of extremely salty water and survive extreme cold, which they use to live in areas where there is no competition/predators. Tho they don't live in such areas all the time. Also for Pokemon, I wonder if the Porygon line would count? It's Pokedex mentions it being upgraded to survive in space. And would the digital world count as an extreme environment? Would man made pokemon count at all for this category?

Then, let them learn Rest so they can clear statuses, heal, and buff their defenses with a single move. Maybe also make the Ability guarantee that they can use Rest even when Frozen or Paralyzed as well.

I have two ideas for what Nautigrade’s ability could be. The first idea is that: When Nautigrade falls asleep, any negative stat changes are removed. Example: If it has its attack sharply decreased then goes to sleep, the attack will no longer be decreased. The second idea is that: When Nautigrade goes to sleep, its special defense stat will sharply increase. That way after sleeping it can receive an advantage for tanking special attacks.

I'd consider Primal Groudon to fit that bill... Although to be fair Primal Groudon forces the environment to be harsh

I designed my own Pokemon based on the scaly foot gastropod. It's a Water/Steel type with an ability to boost heat-based moves it can learn, such as Lava Plume and Scald. Actual extremophile Pokemon by my reckoning could be Rayquaza and Deoxys.

Nautigrade is the new version of Tardinaut, eh ? Welp, still not as cute and 'plush-sized' as the v1, but he's a distinguished gentleman !

Does Ultra Space count as a location for an Extremophile environment? Yes, it appears that theoretically any exceptionally strong version of a Pokemon can survive there, given how USUM works with diving into Ultra Wormholes, but it is an environment with no natural light thanks to Necrozma, and it's explicitly stated that only incredibly powerful Pokemon can survive in Ultra Space.

Is cheatgrass an extremophile considering it loves forest fires¿ And lava cactus, an extremely impressive pioneer species based on what it pioneers (hint in the name)

Honestly Rayquaza could probably be considered an extremophile. It can survive both in space and at ground level, but its preferential habitat is the ozone layer of the upper stratosphere where not only is there a lot less oxygen, it would be incredibly cold and bombarded with radiation.

Seems to me the best way to balance nautigrade would be to just make it very offensively weak. That’s the reason they don’t rule the planet after all - they ain’t hurting anyone. Make it an extreme tank with terrible attacking stats and very few offensive moves

It's just an older name for Archaea. Everything else you claim is right, Archaebacteria(now called Archaea) are separate from Bacteria. I was just taught that their names were bacteria and archaebacteria back in the day but that's just a terminology difference. I guess too many people got confused because it has bacteria in the name despite being separate from bacteria. If you see any older texts just know that Archaebacteria = Archaea

Nautigrade should probably have something involving switching as if you could just swap in and out it would be a super strong defensive pivot

Impwrvious should have the added effect that sleep talk doesn't work if you have the ability. That way you can't be attacked sleeping but also can't attack, and that makes it more balanced.
