Explained: The China-Taiwan dispute | POLITICO

In recent months, China has ramped up its threats towards Taiwan, with incursions by military jets into the island’s air space and missiles fired into the sea around it.
Beijing regards the territory as part of its territory and has vowed to bring it back under China’s control. President Joe Biden has made clear that any attempt to do so by force would be met with U.S. retaliation.
In this video, POLITICO’s China experts explore the origins of the dispute and the current drivers behind it.

program tells only what China wants you to say. Why not ask Taiwanese for their aspiration of controlling their own future, including keeping the thriving democracy and freedom, also the ways of their life.

Look at this way. If China invaded you, it would literally be the start of world war 3. No matter how evil some of these leaders are, they still have families and nobody really wants that. They are also cowards, they don't mind sending young men and women to die, but ask them to suffer? Not likely one bit.

Move the factory and knowledge out of Twain. I don’t understand why this option is not on the table. Through out history things of value were moved and hidden protecting it while it is still in their power to do so. Why risk invasion and loss of technology? Get it out of there and protect it first then prepare your next step.

This is exactly why the US is so 'protective' of Taiwan. It needs Taiwan's jewels. Once Taiwan loses TSMC to the US the story would be different.

Peking is even more ‘protective’. It needs Taiwan not just for TSMC but also for its anti dmocracy propaganda

So your saying Taiwan would rather see Americans troops intervene and fight over land that they have no claim to just to defend taiwans intellectual property? They really have no care for the lives of American and Chinese troops that would have to fight… the whole modern world would come to a crash if it got bad why would anyone want that? They should at least move TSMC to different regions of production instead of a hot zone and highly contested island of Taiwan right? Makes no sense to keep the world at the brink of such a war.

Even with the TMSC China's goal of reuniting Taiwan to the motherland has always been the ultimate goal of all Chinese people throughout the world and the final end to Chinese 100 year humiliation. Reuniting the motherland is the sacred mission of all Chinese people and the Chinese people will not rest until China is one country again united under heaven.

Smart reasoning, the TMSC only really came into its own in the last 10 years, why did the US protect them the 30 years before that? And the 30 years before that?

These assessments are a sick joke. No mention whatsoever that tensions between China and Taiwan didn't start until 2015 when the DPP, a separatist government, was elected into office, and they immediately broke with the One-China Policy, which had been held between China and Taiwan since 1992 (that there is only one China, and Taiwan is a part of it). So, Taiwan altered the status quo, and with U.S. help has begun a process of arming itself for independence. Meanwhile, for all the fearmongering of China's military build-up, they only spend 1.4% of their GDP on their military; if they were a NATO country, the other NATO members would be screaming at China to spend a minimum of 2% of their GDP on their military.

Taiwan and Penghu are leftover issues from World War II. See Treaty of San Francisco. At the time, the U.S. government helped the Chinese Nationalist Party (Republic of China), which had been defeated in the Chinese Civil War, escape to Taiwan, which was then a Japanese colony. Look at Formosa betrayed. Formosa is the original name of Taiwan. After the Chinese Kuomintang came to Taiwan, it still maintained dictatorial rule, but moved towards democracy under pressure from the United States, and the Taiwanese entered the Republic of China to fight for their rights. The Chinese who lost their privileges in Taiwan united with the People's Republic of China to steal Taiwan and Penghu.
