I believe I own one shaped disc. It is the electronic soundtrack to the film The Andromeda Strain (1971). It is a hexagonal disc (designed to reflect the microscopic shape of the virus in the film). It was also uniquely packaged in a sleeve that had six interlocking leaves (a bit similar to a camera iris) on the cover that closed in order to hold the vinyl disc. I have always been a bit paranoid playing it with a good cartridge for fear that if the stylus hit the outer edge of the disc it would immediately destroy the stylus.

I have a Lana Del Rey Heart Shaped single pressed on Translucent Red vinyl. Got it super dirt cheap as I worked for Urban Outfitters, it’s now worth upwards of $200. 🥴

I think I only own two picture disks. I prefer interesting colored vinyl patterns over actual pictures. Probably my favorite is the 2001 Soundtrack released by Mondo a year or two ago where one of records is red in the center and black around the edges (HAL's eye) and the second is a white, blue and black explosion pattern (Jupiter's engines firing). The only special shaped records I have is Sexy Boy by Air which is a picture disk and cut in the shape of a monkey.

Hey there Jared I had a heart shaped 45 when in high school use to work in a record store while in school and a song by 'Bobby Caldweld 'song was what you won't do for love ' was a big hit in late 70's I bought several of them and gave to my friends and family ,had one more had it for a while but gave it to a girl that I had a huge crush on and oh well ! I don't have it anymore but I made the girl smile and she was touched ,but seeing that record bought back lots of memories i wish I bought more of them at the time 45's were 1.00 each in my time, well maybe someday I will find my heart shaped record again JRo

I had no idea picture disc's dated so far back! I only have 3 shaped records unfortunately but I do love them; Holy Diver single in the shape of the Dio logo, Poison the Well by Modest Mouse shaped like a triangle, and Rhino Records Horror Rock Classics Vol 1 shaped like a pumpkin

I think one of the most beautiful shaped picture discs was from Fish's (ex-Marillion) first solo album, the single was "A Gentleman's Excuse Me". I wanted to make mine into a clock but just couldn't bring myself to do it. SO I pull it out every once in a while to look at it.

Id say my preference for shaped discs are ones that stay close to the original circle shape, like the buzzsaw. I think those big gimmicky shapes look more like a sign than an actual record, i want to be able to tell what these are made from As for picture discs, my favorites are ones with a design that animates at the record spins

The vinyl version of melanie martinez's K-12 album is heart shaped! (Edit 1): holy mother of god, 65 likes!, i know it's not so big, but it's the highest amount of likes ive ever had! (Edit 2): 114 LIKES!!, OMG

I have a star shaped disc of the song “Dress You Up” by Madonna and a Madonna shaped disc (“Crazy For You” single). I think that this format is nice.

DEVO also released their 1982 single "Beautiful World" on a shaped picture record. John Linnell of They Might Be Giants also released a single on a shaped record.

I only have a couple of Iron Maiden shaped singles. I really like how they look, but their weird shape makes them awkward for storing. I still love them!

I've been looking everywhere for shaped vinyl records with my kind of music pressed on them, but I can never find any!

I`ve collected vinyl for about 20 years now. I haven`t looked for this kind of record, but I have one. Norwegian band A-HA. Witch I can`t stand. But the record looks cool. Good luck finding one that`s gonna soothe ypur ears \m/

Theres a limited edition Pavement shaped record, shaped like the text bubble on one of their albums. Idk if ur into 90s indie rock but if you are, give it a shot

Kinda off topic from the video, but i was watching your video on flexi-discs, and remembered something interesting. I was at my local record store, and noticed that they have a free merchandise section. In the little box, they had a large stack of free flexi-discs. They were made as a way to spread awareness on school violence, kinda like interactive flyers, and grabbed one. I thought new flexi-discs being pressed was pretty interesting. i immediately went to my local record store after viewing this video and located The Police picture disc as i didnt know it existed, purchased, what a beautiful record

I don’t own any of these shaped records but they do look pretty damn cool.

Hi Jarrett. I have that Butterfly shaped picture disk. It's Talk Talk "Living In Another World" from 1986. It's become quite collectable and is worth about $70.00 now on Discogs. I only paid about $10.00 for it when it came out back in the day.

I have 1 picture disc/monkey shaped record, from the french electronic band Air. A special record store release from 2018, I think. It's a 20 anniversary edition from the release of their famous single "Sexy boy" The Monkey featured is the same cartoon from the video. Very cool!

Hey Jarret, I know you're not fond of Picture Discs because - usually - they sound pretty bad, but I picked up a 180gm Picture Disc of "Believe" by Disturbed and 180g means more vinyl means thicker disc -- and it sounds awesome!

Great video! Always find your videos very informative and enjoyable. I'm wondering what turntable you have that's seen here in this video. I'm shopping for a new turntable and I want to collect as much information as I can on good ones! Thanks!

I've got the Africa-shaped Toto record you showed as well as a saw blade shaped Judas Priest: Painkiller single and a couple of Star Wars shaped records. I think the shaped ones are cooler than picture discs and pick them up whenever I see them.

I'm glad to hear your negative take on picture discs. I have always avoided them, just assuming they cannot sound as good as "proper" discs. I have collected vinyl discs since the mid 1960s. While I don't have all of them still, I do have most of them. Even as a kid, I was pretty meticulous with them and took good care of them. They are still in pretty good shape still and I have over 1000 discs in my collection. A good cleaning (I own a Nitty Gritty) reveals some pretty amazing sound!

Song of the day: Another Day In Paradise - Phil Collins

I have one shaped record in my collection!! It's Three Mile Pilot - Circumcised / Nussun. It's shaped like a turbine with some beautiful artwork in it A side has some really great alt rock sort of music, it's a fun and great track! B side mostly consists of noise music. Dark violins screeching every now and then, as you hear transmissions from what seems like a spaceship. Very spooky!! But very interesting!!

I have a few shaped records, including the Mondo Superman you had in your video, but my favorite by far is my Ninja Turtles shaped 7" picture disc of the song "Turtle Power" from the 1990 movie!

Yes, I have shaped records! Round ones ahahah. On a serious note I think i do have an odd shape one, it's either a heart or star, I don't remember, didn't buy it for the music. I also have one with etched or scribed artwork into B side (music only on A). I'll take a look for them and take a pic and see if I can put a link here

Aye, just found your channel- I've been collecting vinyl like mad since I finally made the jump almost a year ago. This is why I love your videos. I came in thinking it was a video about a couple of shaped records. But what I got was a history lesson about picture discs, AND the story of shaped discs. I got the "Train of thougt" remix 7", shaped as a speeding train, by THE International Norwergian band A-HA Not my kind of music, but it looked cool, so now I own it. Just as your heart record. But, clumsy as I am, during a move from one apartement to another, the front bit of the train broke. So the songs can only be played 2/3. It still looks good behind a glass on the wall though. my first black square vinyl single record was purchased in 1979...a red square vinyl in 1983....i like the coloured vinyl best of all in shaped format....blue bell, red telephone, silver uk 50 pence coin shaped one in 1979 was a firm favourite too....and not forgetting gimmix...orange triangle vinyl!!!!still have them all.

i own the heartshaped single for what you wont do for love by bobby caldwell but now i hav to get my hands on the one u mentioned for georgy porgy i lov that song 😭😭

Really interesting video. History repeating itself? This reminded me of musicians releasing albums on custom shaped USB flash drives in the mid-late 2000s. I use to wonder if it was possible to "insert" a picture into an ultra-clear Vinyl variant, as the foil used for picture discs knowingly does not provide as much sound fidelity as a vinyl surface would... I know it is hard to technically press something like that, but wouldn't it be worth a try?

I am 61 years old and never knew shaped records were a "thing", although I have seen shaped CDs/CD-ROMS. Pretty cool as you can watch them spin (unlike a CD that spins too fast to dig the shape. or is hidden in the drive).

Nice ! Not sure, but I think the first heart shaped record was What you won’t do for love by Bobby Caldwell. I also own the appropriately titled In the shape of a heart by Jackson Browne.

I have all of the Shaped Records shown Here (UK Copy's) and loads more of them, Also have a couple of Hearts, a Red Telephone, Square one. Oblong Brown one. a Triangle (Orange), And loads more. The Police Badges came In a Replicated Leather Wallet, I have all of them. I call them Stylus Killers. If You don't hit the Inner start groove, It will slide off and the Edge of the Shape will take Off Your Stylus. Great In-site Into the History Of these. Thanks.
