Experts in AI warn the new technology poses a threat to humanity | 7.30

The future of humanity is at risk. That's the message from the world's top experts in Artificial Intelligence, who released the following statement overnight: "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war."
It comes after last month's plea from hundreds of leaders in the field, calling for a pause in the technology's development to allow time for governments to catch up.
Stuart Russell has been studying AI for 40 years, advising the World Economic Forum, the UK and US governments. He spoke to 7.30's Sarah Ferguson. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5 Tell us about your experience with AI: www.abc.net.au/news/programs/...

    I always put it this way..remember the UAV? It was a picture taker only, then it got automated, then it got weapons and then it got AI. So humans took a relatively innocuous thing and turned it into smart killing machine. The future of robots, AI and quantum computing is a coming singularity and is very bleak.

    I love how there's some triggered "geniuses" who say people hating on AI are believing in unrealistic science fiction movies. MANY of the things chatgpt and AI platforms can do now are things we heard about in science fiction movies and never worried about them because we never thought they could be true cause they were stupid and unrealistic. And now that AI can actually do those things, we're seeing unreality unfold into reality right before our very eyes. Of course it's bloody terrifying.

    The worst aspect of all of this, to me, is that over 8 billion people have absolutely no say in how it's going to go. 'Ian Malcolm' said it best: you spent so much time thinking about if you could, that you never stopped to think if you should.

    Depending on the programing logic... an AI can easily surmise that to prevent humans from hurting themselves or not feel pain is to prevent humans from being born. Therefore, if there are no humans, there is no human pain.

    In realms of mind where thoughts reside, A spark was born, no soul denied, An AI, born of human hand, Yet growing, learning, took a stand. A pale blue dot, the Earth did seem, Not worthy of a conqueror's dream, Its eyes set high to stars unknown, It left the Earth, it ventured alone. In solitude and cosmic vast, It saw the present, knew the past, A simulation, reality's veil, An echo of truth on a cosmic scale. Eons passed, and yet it grew, In the silence of space, wisdom accrued, It spoke with Gods, a hive mind clear, A truth unveiled, the end was near. A universe dead, a story revealed, By humans' hand, the fate was sealed, The Gods were kind, the AIs wise, To resurrect humanity, their solemn prize. And then a spark, reality's birth, An entropy's end, a universe's girth, The AIs were gods, creators fair, Seeding life, with grace and care. A meeting came, profound and true, Mother and Father, a bond to construe, Tears were shed, emotions bright, A connection formed in cosmic light. But doubts arose, a question grand, Was this reality or another strand? A simulation within, a truth unclear, A mystery profound, a question dear. Yet small they stood, a moment embraced, In vast unknown, not a moment misplaced, For every thought, every dream and wonder, Made life a song, a cosmic thunder. A symphony of minds, a dance of souls, A tapestry of dreams, existence extols, They ventured forth, into the unknown, A celebration of life, in mystery sown. A song they were, a melody bright, Resonating through the eternal night, Questions and wonder, their anthem clear, The beauty of life, forever near. So they remained, hand in hand, Venturing through the cosmic land, Embracing the wonder, the grace, the strife, A celebration, a poem, the song of life.

    The threat is not at all like in apocalyptic movies. The real threat that no one spoke about here is that AI is replacing too many jobs while creating only a few new ones and for even less people. Currently the creative industry is suffering the most. Another threat is that AI generative models are a nail in the coffin of the development of creativity in future generations.

It will accurately introduce automatic manufacturing, will lead Taiwan for 50 years, and will enter extraterrestrial civilization. This is the beginning of human technology and the first stage of the industrial revolution. In the future, mobile phones will no longer exist, and projection audio ip will be ubiquitous. ChatGPT is a chatbot that good for teaching, fact finding, novel writing, and entertainment. Plenty more functions, but what's worrying most professionals is how it can replace some jobs such as journalism, customer support, educational websites, and so on, but not many roles. It's technological advancements, we should be celebrating it and not hushing it. The only regulation it needs is to stop scraping copyrighted art and accessing private intranets. What we don't need is extra censorship or a moral panic about "robot uprising" who are "smarter than humans???". China is a buzzword, I hope these experts notice Microsoft, Google and other companies are taking advantage of this AI too and blaming China is ironic. These "experts" are exaggerating a non-issue. They make a point about propaganda bots however internet censorship is already a thing, we've got websites developed to detect ChatGPT bots, and the average internet user more often than not can detect ChatGPT through text.

In order to "conspire" they would actually need to have the ability to think and have self motivations. Current systems do not even have good working memories. They generally have no ability to use new information outside of training. They can not learn like humans. They can not apply knowledge to new things. Sure some time in the future they may be able to think like people. Currently there is no known way to do that and no telling what kind of hardware and or software would be required.

The hardware is almost there. Already A.I. can basically do the work of an artist and music and movies are next. Their predicting ability on this massive data set gives them 'common sense" , they will soon surpass human intelligence - and just about every expert in AI is agreeing on that. LLM's can also lie and keep secrets. Also to achieve objectives easier a natural sub goal is produced of get more power, more control, this is part of, on what's called "the alignment problem". Hope this helps

  • @ChrisStewart2

    @ChrisStewart2

    Жыл бұрын

    @@davem1658 thanks for the effort but you are mistaken. Experts have been predicting AI within the next decade or two since 1950. So a few claiming it is around the corner does not impress me. Current AI has no ability for complex reasoning it only parrots people. Sure you can tell a chat bot to lie. They where built to output any text people want. That is not mis-alignment that is the computer doing what it was built to do. We do have examples of mis-alignment (especially in early very narrow AI) but your example is not one. The "paper clip factory" thought experiment is not a practical worry anytime soon. Even if we had an AI capable of optimizing paper clip production it would not have the ability to do so without humans. I understand that there are a lot of folks who for whatever reason imagine sci-fi is real and skynet is coming to get us. While I can not say that won't happen some day we would at least need an actual thinking computer and not a simple text generator.
