    Agreed, but why would they be disappointed in her for not being an expert, after calling her in as an expert; did they not research her themselves before proclaiming her one?

    They don't seem truly disappointed at all, really. The Today show doesn't prepare for these smaller skits in their show weeks in advance, these are relatively last minute inclusions, possibly even day before. It's how news media runs, at a break-neck speed. I think that this is more of an argument about audience though. The Today Show isn't NPR -- they aren't looking for specialists with credentials or qualifications or a track record. They're looking for someone high energy with a reputation. My criticism of this guest is that her expertise is questionable and the topic she's speaking on is sensitive. Her political biases are obvious and it's important, especially in political science, for analysis to be objective.

    Mike Hardman um... just as many non-con artists think outside the box as well so what's your point? It's easy to judge Trump's genius and amazing business skills as a "con" since not many people out there have turned a loan of 1 million dollars into a 10 billion-plus empire. How about reading more about how he did it instead of spewing out the same media insults, hm?

    Greg Fakerson Or, consider this: she made an explanation that required critical thinking to understand, but would fit into the allotted time. Most people just watch TV and expect entertainment to flow from the screen and into their heads, so they don't get it. Are a bunch of TV watchers dumb, or is this lady who clearly has good enough qualifications to be paid to speak at events dumb?

A dumbass wastes his time and money on 3 degrees, assuming you even have them.

    +ryan350 To actually answer your question instead of giving you a political rant, I pondered this one a bit myself, and I THINK, but I'm not sure, that what she meant was that she never said they had to keep their hands clasped, and that she instructed them to "pass the hula hoop" and that they could simply have unclasped their hands and handed it on, but since they paid more attention to the gesture than the language, they ASSUMED that the shrugging (which you would do if you're trying to work you way through a hula hoop) was the key to what was to be done.

  • @corthew

    Wow! Her bias is glaring. Body language is not universal. There are cultural differences involved. For Bernie's finger wag may mean he's upset with the subject of his speech but it may also mean he's emphasizing the importance of what he's saying. Trump's hand thing has nothing to do with thinking outside the box. Quite the opposite. If he had difficulty keeping his hands together as he explained big issues THAT would suggest thinking outside the box. His gesture suggests confinement. In a box within the box. She was right on Hillary though.

    I got really into body language stuff in my teens. The problem with this stuff is: 1.) It can be learned, so you never know who's subconsciously portraying genuine body language and who's faking it. 2.) There are so many other factors involved that there's no way of really knowing the deeper meanings. At best you can make guesses. If you're not careful, you'll inadvertently start spinning it it in your head to mean whatever you want it to mean and end up believing something about someone that isn't true.

    The problem is that although some gestures are standard for our culture (such as shrugging) many gestures unusual and so it is difficult to read their meaning exactly. For instance a finger in the air can mean "I want to talk" but also "look over here" or "I'm writing my thoughts on the air, please read them". It doesn't necessarily mean "You bad boy, listen here!" because that finger is straight and vertical, not bent and diagonal.

    I think the shrug may be a US cultural thing; I'm from the UK, if I shrug MY shoulders when I'm speaking, it means, "I don't know if you'll even understand what I'm trying to tell you, but I'm saying it anyway"; or it can add as aspect of 'sometimes', or 'perhaps' to what I'm saying. All depends on context. For me it doesn't mean "I'm unsure of what I'm saying".

  • @Abu7929
    @Abu79298 жыл бұрын

    It's cultural. For example, here in Australia, shoulder shrugging can indicate uncertainty but it widely indicates the exact opposite. For us it's appropriate to not be big show offs, to have some modesty, and so shoulder shrugging while talking about something you achieved is used to indicate a sense of fair mindedness and that it was no big deal, anyone could have done it etc

    Pay attention to the sound quality and messaging in this segment. Hillary gets full clear audio and a message that says "faith," "family," and "I'll do that for you." Donald's segment has poor quality, is short, and the most discernable words are "destructive" and "death". Bernie is loud and clear, then Marko is quieter and disgusted. Seems the messaging and clarity is very purposeful from NBC, and supports Hillary. Also, I loved the facial expression and back pedaling from Natalie when the commentator said that Hillary was imploding, but that Donald was creative.
