    Yvonne, that is great to see you trying Pardo. Why it didn't condition right is because it needs conditioning differently. I have a few tutorials on that and also on how to reduce plaquing in it. As for flakes, I tried at least 30 different ones and honestly the Lumieres are much ado about nothing at a very high price. I found the Ice Resin Opal Crystal Opal the best - I think I have somewhere on my facebook page a video where I show the huge difference between the Lumieres and the Ice Resin - and the Lumiere loses by far. Don't mix anything in Pardo, just needs warming for that bees' wax to get soft and squishy, that's all. You can get exceptional transparency with Pardo. I never use coatings, just sand and buff. Maybe you can join our effort to bring more Pardo in the US. There's a petition out there.

    I was going to refer Von to you Day for your recent Pardo conditioning video. I'm wondering too if it is because Pardo is made from Beeswax as to why it didn't do well with the uv resin? Hmmm...

    Well it's several things, not just that. It's first that it was mixed with another clay of different composition. The other clays are very similar in composition so they can be mixed without a problem. When I asked Viva Decor, they said they don't guarantee the result of mixing Pardo with anything else. I really don't recommend mixing it with clay softener either - as for baby oil, you'll get a very opaque translucent. The only thing you need is to warm it up enough for that beeswax to get soft and squishy. I even heard people complaining that it can get oo squishy if you have warm hands. Second, the other clay was Sculpey III. The UV - I don't know, honestly I've never ever used any kind of coating on Pardo. It doesn't need it. It sands and buffs to glass-like perfection. As for the plaquing - that happens always when there's air trapped. I have a video where I show how to reduce plaquing in translucents. Plaquing happens in opaques too, it's just that they're opaques and we don't see it :)

    You need to condition pardo in ver y very thin pieces and then add them to each other. What you experienced is normal for pardo. Pardo is a beeswax based clay and you will always have a crumbling reaction when you try to break pieces off or condition large amounts at a time.

    I bought Cernit Clay after watching a product comparison tutorial on Polymer Clay Tutor. Still saving it for a "special" project or occasion. It bakes at 235 like Fimo, so not compatible with Sculpy products. I always appreciate product reviews. Saves me money, and mistakes. I like Baroque music, and I play recorder. I don’t know if you’ve solved the bubbling problem, but here’s some suggestions. Let the piece dry out more before adding the clear coat, try under the UV light in smaller increments (30 secs at a time) for the total curing time as this cuts down on the heat generated. Great work, love watching you. 😃

    I once learned that the volume a microphone picks up is reduced by the square of the distance from the microphone. So sounds that are far away needs to be quite loud to be heard. Usually when you apologize for the noise, I'm not even aware of it until you point it out, cars, trains and dogs excluded.

    I often forget that things that sound very loud to me often don't get picked up during recording; I was able to edit out most of the worst of the screeching but there were parts that I wasn't able to tone down without ruining the audio completely. I feel really self conscious of being a butt about kids having fun, and I would never go out and tell them to stop, but I was getting pretty agitated after 3 hours of them honking the recorders at each other on and off. Even Randy, as patient as he is, was like "Realy? ****ing really?" as we were both shooting videos and clicking Record seemed to activate their desire to make music :p First world youtuber problems, maybe lol

    Yvonne, I've had success using a heating pad on low setting to soften crumbling clay before conditioning it. Learned this technique from either Lisa Pavelka or Ms. Kato herself when the Carol Duvall Show was on HGTV. Oh, how I miss that show! But give it a try, I've never worked with Pardo and it looks like Kalyana Design Tutorials might have a better suggestion.

    This video is exactly why I started following you back when you only had 10K subscribers. :o) I love that you share with us both the successes and the failures. I wonder if the bubbled coating has to do with the glitter flakes being larger. Is it possible the UV reflected more on those than the other and that might have made the difference? I have no idea if that might be it, but thought I'd throw it out there. Or maybe since Fawn says it's a beeswax-based clay, that might make a difference. Not sure because the whole UV resin thing still seems like some form of magic to me. lol Tiny Pandora has some great polymer clay stuff and her tutorials are good too. (Different from Von's, so I love them both.)

    hey Von, great video. i enjoy watching you work. about the deep shine UV finish.... it is a 'brush on' coating, one thin coating with the brush should give you a very shinny finish. it will not self dome, and pouring is way to thick. Teresa Salgado has a video on how to use deep shine, at her KZread channel. thanks again!

    Are the bubbles on the pardo cab over the flakes maybe? Could it be that the opal flakes you added reacted somehow? Also, you could try mixing either clay with translucent liquid clay and use a mold, that might give a more translucent finish? Just a few ideas I had while watching :)

  • @NREnger
    @NREnger6 жыл бұрын

    @Yvonne Williams I could be something in the clay. I know when I am doing molds with silicones sulfur and latex will make it so it will not cure. So I always have to use clay with out sulfur in it to make my molds. So my guess would be something in the clay is reacting to the glaze.

    I’m not sure if someone has already said something but, I think I know why the resin bubbled. If you have a look at the end of when you were applying the resin, right where your bubbles appear is right where you dabbed the brush instead of brushing it on. Just a thought. I understand this is an old video. Very entertaining

    I did the same experiment last week. I also did it with the clear liquid sculpy. All 3 pieces of mine came out bad. I didn't think any of them looked like an opal. My glitter was to large which was some of the problem. Now I'm trying to decide to cover them with colored clay or maybe try an ink die on them and see how they look. I hate wasting clay. Any ideas??

    I wonder if the other clay (the one you were working with in this video) was more porous? Maybe, that is why it bubbled? Or maybe it heats up at a higher rate and needs a lower temperature to set the UV? Maybe ask the manufacturers of both the new clay and the UV light and see what they tell you. I have had clear coats bubble up before when I painted outside and the sun heated the wood up too much. I bring my stuff inside and get it out of sunlight nowadays to dry it after adding a clear coat. BUT.... The headstock on my first guitar, a Harmony, looks like black leather now because of that method, using black spray paint, leaving it in the sun, then adding another coat on top without doing anything else to it. It was a really hot sunny couple weeks while I was painting it. I kept that effect, because it was a happy accident, lol.

    Tammy Williams it's not necessary to coat polymer clay. You can wet sand and buff it to a nice shine. Many people prefer to use a gloss coating to reduce the amount of sanding necessary and to give a higher shine. Hope this answers your question.

    Pardo is bees wax based and must be conditioned differently. Very thin slice then run thru pasta machine on thin setting one slice at a time. Do not add clay softener and it will still be white after baking. Plunge in ice water immediately. It is very difficult to get in U.S. but is a beautiful clay if used correctly.

    My cousin gave me a pack of Fimo (the multi-color small blocks pack) that some lady gave her years ago, and it's all really crumbly. I did basically what Von did by slicing it really thin, but then I used some liquid Sculpey (TLS) between the slices to help it rejuvenate. Seems to be working well for me, but it does require a lot of TLS and a lot of rolling (don't use a pasta machine until the TLS is well-incorporated).
