Your plate will clean up absolutely fine with some baby oil. So glad you experimented with this and you will now see its potential. It does look just like lithography, and you can keep drawing into the original with pastels and charcoal too, and make fresh prints from your original. I loved your ghost and it’s complex marks. You could also make your ‘skeleton’ as your first mark making with black or another deep dark pastel, or even charcoal, though I find it will turn less black than pastel. Hand painted would work well too. I loved your surprise at the vividness of pastels! I was also surprised that they no longer were smudgy and messy! Gell plates are just so good to work with, they do so much!

It is great how pastel colours stay lively when placed on gelli. Pastels can be overlooked due to challenge of sealing without loss of vibrancy, or limits in multimedia. The gelli keeps them firm and bright and beautifully integrated with acrylic in a way almost impossible to emulate otherwise.. You continue to make new modernism exciting, Fulton.

HI Fulton! I am so thrilled to see the results you achieved using pastels on your Gelli plate! I made some prints with pastels that I loved, but I placed the pastel directly on the plate and pulled the print, and the pastels stained my 2 5" x 7" plates, unfortunately. Using the pastels with a transfer method is definitely the way to go! Beautiful prints!

Beautiful work!! The texture on the ghost print is amazing! And yes, it's a challenge to get all the color off the plate, but I find baby wipes work great, maybe it's the baby oil in them. That yellow-green color you liked is yellow ocher - it's my favorite too! You can get multiple prints off the same paper too - I use scrap paper to scribble on, then "stamp" onto the gel plate multiple times.

Then I thought that if I used black acrylic paint to pull the print it would look great because soft pastel on black paper is very nice. But it didn't work AT ALL. Hi Fulton, I want to firstly say a warm thank you for all of your inspiring work. Very therapeutic and informative! Secondly, I wonder if you can help me? I bought a large 16”x20” gelli plate but when I opened it I found that it doesn’t come in a clam shell case like the smaller ones do. I read somewhere that I can use copy paper but the largest size paper I have is cartridge paper which I ended up using. Hi Fulton, I am wondering if you would be kind enough to share how you go about framing your large monoprints. I remember watching your video a while back on your exhibit and the pieces looked beautiful. I remember you used black or white frames depending on the piece. I have made a couple of pieces that I would like to frame but find the 22x30” size quite expensive when doing custom matting and framing. I have framed my own photography over the years but pieces are quite a bit smaller. I fully understand if you don’t want to do a lesson on this so don’t feel obligated in any way. You have enough on your plate. Thanks so much for all you do share.

Hi Libby, framing larger pieces are best done professionally. I'm sure there are other channels dealing with DIY framing, but due to safety concerns handling plate glass etc. it's best to let the pros do it.

Thanks Fulton, I have been researching framing and agree with you regarding DIY framing. I have done a lot of smaller pieces so was just trying to figure out a sensible way to print larger pieces. I think it can be done, but I am concerned about the glass issue also. I am not a big fan of plexi either so would rather leave this to a pro framer. I always appreciate your advice on these things. Thank you again.
