Experiencing the Moody and Mysterious 'Paint It Black' for the First Time : Rolling Stones Reaction

Ойын-сауық

We listened to "Paint It Black" for the first time and wow, what a unique and captivating song! Mick Jagger described it as a "Turkish song", but scholars have noted its Eastern-sounding phrases actually evoke the Middle East more than India. The sitar intro played by Brian Jones and Jagger's droning vocals create a hypnotic atmosphere, while Keith Richards' bolero-inspired guitar and Wyman's heavy bass drive the song forward. It's been classified as raga rock, psychedelia, and psychedelic rock, and is considered one of the Stones' attempts to transcend their blues-based rock and roll conventions.
The lyrics, which use color-based metaphors, describe the grief and despair of someone who has lost a partner. There are alternative interpretations, from a bad trip on drugs to the Vietnam War, but music scholar James E. Perone argues that the lyrics establish a concept for the album Aftermath, which explores the darkness of the psyche around the theme of love, desire, and obsession. "Paint It Black" is an example of the Stones' development as artists, enriching their blues-derived hard rock with occult instrumental colors. Christgau praised Jagger's influence on the band's artistic identity and his lyrical power, subtlety, and wit, ranking him and Richards as the second best melody composers in rock after Lennon and McCartney.

I'd recommend 'Gimme shelter' next, what a great groove. The studio version is a treat for the ears, with an iconic impassioned take featuring Merry Clayton, her backing vocals are stunning. There's a lyrics video in the same style as the one you just did (although there are some errors with some of the lines in both those videos) . Would also love to see your reactions to a live version of 'Gimme shelter' too. 'Live '95 with Lisa Fischer' has an exemptional performance with their long standing live backing singer taking the limelight halfway through and hitting some astounding notes.

Thanks for this reaction. The Rolling Stones are so iconic with so many amazing songs, it is definitely worth checking out. Try listening to - Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter, Can't You Hear me Knocking, for a start. There are seriously too many great songs to list.

You guys should try the Stones Sympathy for the Devil, and 'Gimme Shelter'. The vocalist Merry Clayton, on Gimme Shelter is just unbelievable! It may be a Rolling Stones song, but it belongs to Merry.

The Rolling Stones was a great band and Mick Jager's performances were on another level. I would suggest watching them live at least once. Here's a live performance to one of their popular songs "The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rocking Roll (But I Like It) - OFFICIAL PROMO" I'm in total agreement with your musical analysis, and what ya'll said about the massage of the lyrics. I lost two uncles in the Vietnam war. Sadly, until we stop warring against each other this song will always be relevant . Really enjoyed your reaction thanks for sharing ☮

Don’t get me wrong. I love the Stones and this song. But to be fair this song is from ‘66 and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” is from ‘64. In the fast paced Sixties two years of music evolution are worlds apart. Both bands were growing and changing. In 1966 the Beatles released “Revolver,” an album many consider to be better than Sgt. Pepper’s. That album featured “Eleanor Rigby.” And if you compared that to “I Want to Hold Your Hand” you would have to conclude that the Beatles’ sound and sophistication had also come a long way in 1966. But “Paint It Black” is one of my favorite early Stones recordings.

Long ago (and I mean over 30 years!), I read a paper while I was at university that suggested this song was a visceral, emotional reaction to JFK's assassination. I still think that paper, whoever wrote it (I can't remember), was on to something!

Those lyrics were wrong, at the end… ‘I wanna see it painted, painted black’ nothing about painting faces ‘I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky’ not ‘flying high in the sky’ Doesn’t really fit the mood of the song. 🤣 Great reactions.
