Experience the Sunday open air market in Yantzaza Ecuador

We share our typical weekly Sunday shopping trip to the outdoor market in Yantzaza, Ecuador. After moving to Ecuador, we rarely shop at typical supermarket stores, and instead enjoy the experience of these outdoor mercados. The variety of foods, the prices, and the community interactions all make the drive worthwhile.
With our $50 weekly food budget, we can feed our family and have a few treats along the way like giant bunches of bananas, panela, and coconuts. We do share some of the costs of the items we commonly buy, to give an idea of what food costs are like, here in Southern Ecuador.
We are a family transforming a mostly-untouched 30 acres of jungle mountain into a working, self-sustainable, off-grid farm. There are a lot of trials, errors, successes, and lessons to be learned along the way. We hope to share it all with you, to tell our story, to inspire, and to hopefully help answer the questions you didn’t know to ask.

Gracias for asking, Like Ecuador more every day. But starting to take care of business. ( motorcycle related ) Frustrated! But But , I am a guest in their part of the world. I will learn how to participate as a proper visitor . Have gotten angry twice but always with a smile. Ecuador has much to teach me ! I have open eyes , open heart and misguided expectations , 60 + years in the USA is hard to shed Hahaha

I enjoyed this video. I've lived in Ecuador now for 10 years. I have moved a lot, living in Cuenca, Mindo, Cotacachi, Banos, Manta, and other places. I am about to move to a slightly rural area near Loja. So it is interesting to see that I will actually be pretty close to where you are. It's interesting to me that there are towns even as big as Yantzaza in an area that looks on the map like there might be nothing there at all. So I subscribed to your channel and I look forward to seeing more. I really love all the natural beauty of Ecuador but I could not hold up the labor like you folks do. But you are young, and I have no doubt that you will reach your goals. Maybe some day long in the future when you are entirely ready, maybe it would be fun to come to your place for a visit. But certainly, no rush. I will be following your videos. Thanks for posting

Hola! We are often surprised by the towns we discover in what seems like nothing by jungle landscape, kind of part of the charm of this part of the country. Thank you very much for the subscription and comment, we appreciate it. Keep in touch, we'd love to show you what we're doing what we've got it a bit more established!

Tks. Great video. How many minutes to town? I know where Loja is. I'm not sure where your start point is ? Love the van. Look forward to video. Looks like mini VW van. Saraguro is between Loja and Cuenca. Lovely indigenous community. Quichua if I spell that correctly.

It takes us around an hour to get to Yantzaza, which is the nearest big town to us. That's about 2.5 hours from Loja.

Great video! What would a van like yours cost new/used? I heard they are very fuel efficient and a real workhorse. Cheers Roger

Thanks! There are no more new vans like ours - there are similar Chinese vans you can get new but they do not make the Suzukis anymore. We paid $5000 for it - we put up a video on it if you're interested! kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGWpksyygq3gqdI.html

40 limes for $1! They are a bit seasonal, so a great deal right now.

I was about to ask about the van, but I guess I’ll wait for the video about it. I’ve been thinking about getting one to use as a sort of mini farm truck, but I’m not sure if it will climb the steep hills to the farm.
