Experiment: Magnetic Levitation Train : Maglev Train!
What is required : Simple magnets, Pencil, Flat surface
Procedure: Place the pencil horizontally on the flat surface. Hold the magnet above the pencil, ensuring that the attracting side faces downward. Slowly lower the magnet towards the pencil, keeping it parallel to the surface.
Observation: As the magnet approaches the pencil, you'll notice that the pencil repels the magnet, causing it to levitate above the surface.
Explanation: This phenomenon is due to diamagnetic repulsion. When the magnet approaches the pencil, it induces a magnetic field in the pencil, creating an opposing magnetic field. This repels the magnet, causing it to levitate. The pencil's diamagnetic properties make it repel the magnet, despite not being magnetic itself.
