Expanding FOAM for fence posts?! Would you try this product?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Have you see this new fence post product? Unlike spray foam, it's a closed cell foam and ideal for posts that are not load bearing. This was my first time using it and I am impressed. We used the product on two short posts for a small trash can privacy fence I built this summer. It's now winter and I'm so impressed with how sturdy they posts are. Can be handy if you dont have access to water on site for concrete mixing, it is very quick, and more benefits.

I appreciate the [nice] comments. Things to know: These posts are for a simple, tiny 4x4’ light duty privacy fence that hides trash cans. Nothing structural. This is not insulating foam. It’s made for exterior fence posts (rivr.link/MRG-zL9eLz). We live in Texas where it’s warm most of the year. No frost line, not windy. No, we are intentionally not using the level as a level but instead just as a straight line to get the posts in the same plane. Yes those are treated posts. Yes, I’ve used and love Quickcrete. This was just a good opportunity to try a new product. No, the rain has not affected the product at all. I did this 2 years ago and the posts are still rock solid. No rot, no wobble. I’m pretty impressed. Great product for a small job like this, in an area like this, or if you are in a spot with no access to water to mix Crete.

80' is relatively small for a fence. Is it solid or open? Wondering if it catches significant wind load. I'd expect this product to last 3-5 years but I'm interested to learn how it holds up after 5-10.

I came to comment about an electric utility company using a foam mix like this for power poles. Seems good. I wasn't told much about it because I was a subcontracted flagger, but it was interesting to watch. When they did it, the foam was completely underground and dirt packed on top of it, so it wasn't seen.

We used that a lot long time ago. I live at the German border. It's not really for insolation, but making things rigid but not 100% locked. Like with water hamer, the pipe can still move a bit and reduce the impact. And also good for noice reduction. When pipes go hot and cold, it will make a ticking noice in your home. And it's just super fast and easy. Thus also good for the leazy handyman :-)

The last time i used it was on my outdoor kennel , on the gate posts. Used large size wendy's cups and a jiffy mixer and the 32 oz cup of mix did what 160lbs of quickcrete did. Just need to have good temp support for 5 minutes while setting then that thing isn't fn moving. Its wild and it bonds to the soil too which kind of makes it a PITA to pull posts.

But at the end of the day, if it works for you or what you're doing, it's good enough and most of the people having an issue with the way you do things have no idea how to think outside the box or try new things.

Electrical poles placed by the utilities are often secured with similar foam nowadays. I used the Sika foam for my 6 ft high cedar fence a couple years ago - but I did the gate posts in concrete. It's all straight and solid of course. I just put in a chainlink fence at my income property this week - most posts driven in without concrete or foam, but the gate posts are held in foam as I know it makes it as solid as concrete for this purpose.

Filled the crack and went on to use self leveler to make a picture perfect floor. Lifts gone and there is no damp wicking. Three years now still great.

I've got a bad back and only needed to set 4 poles, so I bought like 5 bags of this stuff 3 years ago for my chicken coop run. So far, the poles are as solid as the day I put them in, and I didn't have to haul around 50Ib bags of concrete to do it, even had a left over bag. For a small project, this is great, pricey if you go bigger, though.

I've used this stuff a bunch of times. It's about nearly impossible to pull the post back out once it's cured. It also coats the posts with a waterproof membrane because it is closed cell foam, which increases the post's longevity. The only downside is that you have to have the post 100% square, level, and braced before you start the pour. It sets so fast that you have no time to make any adjustments.

The foundation prevents the wood from rotting. The water might seep into the wood from the bottom if there is no stone underneath. The foam may help keep the water out to some degree but it does not look like it will last longer than stone.

being a Florida resident and injuring hurricanes I would say that the foam probably has no way to it to help keep the post in place and high winds. with that foam and really wet ground a slat fence is going to fold flat.

@abbyynorman2874 Do you drive a car ? Where does the rubber go that wears off of your tires ? Does it magically disappear ? Guess where it goes. Right into the ground. Or it goes into the drain system with all the waste water. It's contaminating the water in the sewer systems as well as the ground water. Which situation is worse ? The foam around the post isn't going anywhere. It's not breaking down and leaching into the ground water. It's no different than the plastic barrier that surrounds the foundation of a lot of homes to stop water penetration. Should people remove that because it is made of plastic ? Just let water flow into our basements ?
