    I’ve been playing Carbon Fiber guitars for years. Live in Alaska where the temps range from -60F to +80F. Super dry in the interior and super wet on the coast. No problem and they sound great in the bargain. A friend has a 12 string from Emeral and I a baritone. My favorite is an old CA baritone. .

    10 or 15 years ago I bought a CA Cargo, so I'd have a guitar to relax with that would stay in tune. I took it to a family reunion, and its durability made me feel comfortable with leaving them out in the living room of the house we rented. My cousin came to me, apologetic that her son had knocked it over. I was able to reassure you there was no problem and I got to show a lot of the little ones something about playing guitar. That thing really does stay in tune a LONG long time. Sound is great for a little bitty guitar.

    Cool unique guitar with the infused wood. Has really nice tone. Love your playing, with your percussive style though this guitar material clicks a bit different than I am used to hearing. Like a rim shot that sits out front of your playing. I can see some benefit to the sound hole position, especially with a singer/songwriter style on a stage. Thanks Mary!

    Hi Mary. Great that you have found these, or that they have found you ! I replied to a lefty player on your vid for the ghastly looking Fender Acoustisoncrap, that an Emerald X10 with all the pick up options is available lefty and would do the job better. I am lucky enough to own two Emeralds myself, an X20 , which is about an OM size and a big ol’ jumbo sized x30. I phoned them one time with a question and was answered by Alistair (the boss) in person, how cool is that ? My Emeralds are stock models, but their custom builds are fantastic and are achieved with a combination of emailing and face time, so you get exactly what you want. Trouble is, now they’ve got lovely you promoting them, in addition to their usual crew of big beardy Irishmen, it is bound to increase their lead times !

    I don't have a very long "Bucket List" -- too many reasons to list here, but suffice to say the older I get, the more I focus upon the love I have in my life (especially my beautiful bride and amazing children, then endless concentric circles radiating outward from here) and the relationships I have, and the less I focus upon, well, just about everything else. That being said, a visit to the Emerald factory in Ireland and the acquisition of one of their stunning works of art--yeah, that's on my list. ;-)

    Carbon fibre does not per se show any extension/shrinking due to hygroscopical&thermal change. But it is possible to design a layer-stacking, that could. So the characteristics of the material are very delicate and every design of carbon fibre stacking might sound different, even with the same guitar construction.

  • @sicko_the_ew
    @sicko_the_ew4 жыл бұрын

    Sounds great to me, but the reason I wish carbon fibre guitars will take over the world is because this would reduce the guitar industry's impact on deforestation. (So what we really want is low end priced composite guitars that sound better than low and mid-end wooden guitars; and then the remaining wooden guitars can go up in price, with a bigger percentage of them being lovely enough instruments to (?) justify the destruction of forests to produce them than is currently the case). No, not destruction of trees; destruction of forests. To get to the "valuable" trees, they clear fell a bunch of "worthless" trees, "weeds", etc. At some level of consumption this can just amount to recycling the forest with bits of new primary forest full of all the trees that were being shaded to death by one great big tree, but with populations rising, this is less and less possible. Somehow we need to learn to do without forest products.

    You are a good writer and describe things so well! I think though it would be even better if they build a carbon guitar that, compared to low and mid-end wooden guitars, sound like high end wooden guitars and cost less than the lower quality wooden guitars ha! Why not? The carbon guitars I've been looking at cost a lot $1,200, a Lava Me, and I guess the Emerald here is $2,000 . I wonder if it is because carbon fiber is a very expensive material. Do you think that's why they cost as much or more?

  • @sicko_the_ew

    @sicko_the_ew

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@mwj5368 That would be much better, yes. I would guess that economies of scale are the biggest factor in price. Current carbon fibre manufacturing seems to involve a lot of hand layups, and waiting for things to cure. It's probably easier to put wooden parts on a production line. As far as sound goes, what I've heard is that the top makes all the difference. The bottom, sides, and neck etc make a much smaller contribution to sound. So anyone going in this direction would do well to focus on making the top "timbre-tunable", somehow.

    @@sicko_the_ew Hi Again! Thanks for taking your precious time to answer so well! I've read the same about back and sides, something like back and sides contribute only 5 to 10% of the sound! My guitar was made in 1986, a Takamine classical, before rosewood was illegal, and it sounds very beautiful. In Japan they also sealed the Takamine guitars inside the body too (mine was owned in Japan but appears to have been used almost not at all!) because it can be very humid there due to the ocean. With that sealant I'm thinking my guitar is much less prone to cracking plus it sounds so fantastic. I think they could come up with recyclable plastics of a thinness and strength without bracing that would profoundly resonate even more than wood... and part of the paradigm shift to a greener world... yet just my amateur view. Thanks for your insights!

  • @sicko_the_ew

    @sicko_the_ew

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@mwj5368 I don't know if pausing to chat with someone who dreams a similar dream, and is ready to discus it here would count as offering insight, but thanks for your kind words. If the top of your guitar is sealed enough, it should have a kind of hybrid wood/synthetic nature that makes it a good model of what's possible in plastics? (It's just the fibres are cellulose instead of carbon). I have this idea that if you could make a top very stiff, but very light (and no bracing), that would have to have a good sound. It would be "braced all over". (I'm imagining something of quite thick over cross-section, but hollow, so light. That's one of the sections whose sound would be interesting to hear, anyway. Anyway, let's hope that one day there will be greener guitars out there, manufactured in ways that make them something within reach of a lot of players. (I have a dreadnought copy that has begun to bulge up round the bridge, so has an action I have to fight quite hard to get a decent sound out of. Maybe I should one day trying to stiffen it up with fibreglass, and see how it goes. :D ... For some reason taking a chance like that gives me the heebies, though).

    I'm listening through phones but it seams to have a very clear sound. The carbon fiber seams to emphasize the high and high mid frequencies but lacks some wood warmth. That's my first impression.

    Hi Mary, You've tried both the Emerald guitar and the Fender Strat Acoustasonic - so what do you reckon? I have an old Stratacoustic and, to be honest, it's a bit of a disappointment, I even had to physically move the bridge back 3mm to get the intonation right. Their new offering looks like it's a completely different beast but it's competing, price wise, with the Emerald, so I'm curious to know what you think of how the two compare, especially acoustically.
