Exorcism of a Squealing Pig - JVC Cassette Deck

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My JVC TD-W75 deck started squealing like a little piggy. So it was time to do something about it!

You are a deck life saver! I have a JVC TD-W803 dual deck that was making the crazy loud squealing when playing tapes and was about to recycle the unit when I found your video. I sprayed a small amount of 3-In-One Lock Dry Lube oil into the small hole behind each of the larger motor enclosures. No more squealing! Beautifully quiet again when playing tapes. Yay! Thank you!

Good job. I had major squeaking in both sides of my JVC TD-W205 and no oil so I used WD40 and ....... Silence is golden. It worked beautifully. For how long I don't care as I'm just digitizing a few cassettes then back to the attic.

Thank you. I have the JVC TD-W354 that I bought new years ago which has the pitch control, mix mixing, auto-reverse extras. I used it daily a few years ago and it has sit for a while and started doing the exact same thing. I followed your steps and it is working great again. All it took was a tiny drop on that main motor on each side and presto. Keep up the good work!

I have a deck with what looks like an identical motor in it. I used Deoxit and Ballistol. I had to run it through a couple times because it came back, but for now it's good. Either way, I ordered another motor just in case it ends up being a recurring problem. Seems worth it because it's one of the few decks with Dolby S and it sounds great.

Found the TD-W307 at a thrift shop a couple of months back and it was doing the same thing so I figured it was a lost cause until I found this. Put some Zoom Spout oil in those two motors and it's completely silent now (aside from the music). Incidentally, this deck looks exactly like yours, except that it has pitch control, a mic jack and auto reverse. Thanks a million!

@@mako1168 Well, you have to take the top off to get to the motors, if that's what you mean.

@@brianh44 Hi Brian, I have the TD-W216 model. Just wondering where exactly on the motors on your model did you put the oil? I'm hoping all the motor units are fairly similar from model to model. Therefore does it get dropped into the top? or does the entire deck need to be flipped in any particular direction to get the oil in? Any advice would be appreciated. :)

@@rick_terscale1111 It's been quite a while since I did this, but I presume I did what was described around 4:30 in the video and put some oil on top of that motor.

@@brianh44 Thanks Brian, and thanks for pointing out that point in the video. I kinda missed that. :/ Now I know exactly where to drop the oil. Edit: It did the trick! So simple yet works so well. :)

Thanks very much for posting this video WaybackTECH. This worked a treat and such a simple solution. Who would have thought that a few dabs of oil on a spindle/shaft would fix something that sounded really bad. You saved my ears from painful screeching. ;) Your motor assembly appears to be the same or similar to my TD-W216. I dropped the oil where you pointed to at 4:30. I used Triumph (Aussie brand?) Sewing Machine oil. At first I tried dropping a drop directly from the bottle but a single drop is too much. So I dropped a few drops onto a q-tip with a pointed end and a flattened end. The flattened end worked better. After smearing a bit of oil on I loaded a tape and played it. All great at this point but decided to stop the tape and apply more oil. Repeated the process a couple of times for good measure. Hopefully that will keep it going for a while. ;) Thanks again! :) Now I can finally covert my old mix tapes and taped radio shows to WAV files.

For anyone thinking of buying a 2nd hand tape unit, I would recommend the JVC over a Technics unit. JVC has a manual eject button where as Technics decks have a motorised ejection system which will become a problem over time. I've had two Technics units that have had major issues due to this and had to get rid of them as procuring and replacing parts would have been way too much effort.

I have had other commenters mention the same thing about the drive mechanism and that does not surprise me one but that JVC just kept using the same design even though the outer casing was "updated" in the 90's. Great decks.

Had the same 'squealing pig' problem with my JVC TD-W309 tape deck. A drop of gun oil on the motor shafts did the trick.

Lots of unrelated general info and no specific detail on the actual fix of the squealing pig noise. The only useful information from the video could be summed up in one short sentence. "I put some kind of lubricant on the motor shaft, but I don't tell you how or what. Great resolution on lintballs.

I have this exact deck that I bought myself in 1986. I looked for a video in order to see where and how to lubricate it. Instead your video showed you taking it apart and talking about lubing it, but not actually doing that step. It was a waste of my time. :-(

UPDATE: It's Fixed, kinda. So the high pitched sound is gone but it's still making some low frequency humm, not like the 50/60 Hz humm but more like a bad bearing, will try and apply some WD 40 to the motor after taking it apart, don't want any of that on my belts

Hi. I just got the same deck from a guy. The synchro dubbing worked for me once, now it won't. Also, can't record from one tape to the other now. Both sides play well independently. Seems like a switching problem. Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks!

Those machines are pretty reliable... I would clean the switches with contact cleaner and check the functions out again ... if the doesn't help gently pull the ribbon wire connections ... moisten a paper towel with alcohol and give them a good gentle cleaning (make sure about the wire position (individual wires) and note the strip on the ribbon cable) those wires will over time loose there connection and the cleaning will restore the signals they carry

I just use R/C motor bearing oil, and just put a drop on the shaft right above where it goes into the motor/bearing. That is all that was needed. It is about $6 for the oil.
