Exonerated 'Central Park Five' Survivor Dr. Yusef Salaam on Black Trauma | NowThis

Dr. Yusef Salaam was imprisoned as a member of the Central Park Five, a group of Black and Hispanic teenagers who were falsely charged and convicted of an attack on a jogger in Central Park.
Though much of the public called for their execution, including future President Donald Trump, the Central Park 5 were eventually exonerated and have shared their experience as a warning against systemic police racism and police brutality, as seen in the documentary series When They See Us.
As the Black Lives Matter comes to the forefront in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, protests throughout the world are waking us up to the shared experience of Black trauma in a society that is unfairly biased against them. The Black experience shared by many African Americans is wrought with the collective trauma of centuries of injustice, and as the Black Lives Matter protests and George Floyd protests continue to grow, we must not lose sight of the tragedies that led us to this moment.

Every time a black person tries to make a point, it seems that people who either truly dont understand or choose not to immediately jump to invalidate the injustice all around us by nitpicking on specific words, or trying to become offended by something as simple as saying the color of your skin For black people, the color of their skin means something that we just cant understand. But we can listen and learn. This is uncomfortable. I get that. But while you're mildly uncomfortable and able to take a moment to water down an issues as wide spread and as deeply rooted in society as this, people are dying. So please remember that this isnt about you. It's about all of us. Instead of being difficult, just listen.

Trump refuses to admit he was wrong back then and he’s very wrong right now. I’m happy to learn that this fine man, this doctor, has become a beacon of truth that is trying his best to help the young black women and men that still face the hatred and racism that he experienced as a teenager. I’m a 69 year old melanin deficient woman who has spoken out against racism since I was 15 years old. I transferred to an integrated high school because I could no longer keep quiet about what I saw and heard at the all white school my racist mother sent me too. I’m hoping that at least now there might be justice for the people who are protesting peacefully. It’s very strange to me that most of the looters are all white. Makes me realize that the game is still rigged. Annie in TN 🥰✌️
