This is my all time favourite debut! I loved it the first moment I heard it and it has never dropped in my esteem. This declared a group who had talent to spare and who were not afraid to take risks. It let us know that they would be setting trends not following. It is also a song with a message and a song that screams performance. No little girly 'aren't we pretty?' lyrics here, even though they are. It ranges effortlessly over genres and doesn't fit into any style box. This is total brilliance, all you need to know about EXO clearly declared from the start. Love this group!

I think MAMA is the most powerful lyrics EXO have in all their discography, and it will always be my favorite.

They had two pre-debut songs, but this was their debut. They debuted simultaneously in China and Korea, with the two sub units performing in Korean and Mandarin separately, in China and Korea separately. They also produced two MV's which were very similar but not identical. Each MV was done in the language of the sub-unit and featured that sub-unit, but they also always had cameos of the whole EXO 12 to remind us that they were one group in two units. That is why you see all 12 but only the 6 performing. In Mama, the cameos are about introducing their powers and linking the pairs of powers across the units, for example K's Suho's water power linking him to M's Xiumin with his frost power which you noticed. It's as much about introducing the concept as it is about the group. EXO's concept was the first that was explored so deeply and remains the most complex. This whole debut was genius, but it centres on a song that demands attention and respect. What else would you expect from EXO!

Mama is EXO's debut mv that shows every member and their superpowers, this is literally the best debut song I've heard and seen in my life!

If you compare the live debut stage to to Mama in Exordium concert with all 9 members, you can just see the remarkable growth in vocals, dance and stage presence. They were already very good when they debuted, but their vocals and dance just keep getting better and better every year even to this day… simply amazing

An EXO-K and EXO-M version of MAMA was made which showed all 12 members' superpowers. And yes Chen and Xiumin were members of Exo-M back then. All 12 members can be seen in the MV especially at the beginning and end. But it's only the 6 EXO-K who sings.

This is how they introduce them to people-Both EXO-K and EXO-M. Both sub-units have this MV but the other one is in Chinese which means they showcase EXO-M. And also, U know they are really singing live when D.O starts to do some adlibs to their songs. I really, every time I listen to Mama, I am shocked by the power of the vocals, since it is a debut song, and I am also amazed at those people who said that EXO failed SM when they listen to this power

I swear this is one of the best debut out there. EXO be flexing their talent and presence since debut. EXO did debut in Korea and China before; as both are their target market For promotions: EXO-K in Korea and EXO-M in China (they were divided) EXO did promotions for WOLF & Growl as 12 since it's their 1st full comeback after debut then, went to promote via sub-units again with Overdose After the 3 Chinese members left, they decided to unite and continue to promote as one group we now have as EXO (with 9 members)

In April 2012, I still remember EXO's debut in SM, saying that a new boy group will be released after a few years. Even though they were rookies, their live performance was great. The D.O. vocal in the intro is still shocking! I was a 14-year-old middle school student and had no choice but to become a fan. I still can't forget the debut and busy performances shown at various music programs and local events in 2012. Back in 2012, EXO was popular despite being a rookie, but I saw few people in my school who knew or liked EXO except me. lol but a year later in 2013, when Wolf and Growl became hits, EXO's huge popularity turned the school upside down!! ㅋㅋㅋ There must have been no one who didn't like EXO in my school and in my teens and 20s in Korea at that time.

To clarify your confusion: 1) Mama is Exo's official Debut song. They released 2 pre-debut songs to showcase their dancing skills (HISTORY) and their Vocals skills(WHAT IS LOVE) both Exo-k and Exo -M versions. 2) Chen and Xiumin are the only two Koreans who are in Exo-M back then hence their Chinese stage names 😁 3) Mama Exo-k version will showcase Exo -k members vocals and powers and some scenes u will see all 12 original members together because it's showing us different time era when they were together and when they split apart later on according to the narrative at the beginning explaining why they are in parallel worlds protecting the heart of TREE OF LIFE from their enemy THE RED FORCE. Exo-m Mama version will showcase Exo-M members and their powers and skills. 4) the color coded lyrics you watched was correct but the mv may confuse you. I also got confused too when I was new to Exo😅. 5) note Mama narrative have confusing but helpful hints to all their mvs released after. Keep in mind their powers play a HUGE HUGE ROLE IN EVERYTHING THEY RELEASE EVEN THEIR SOLO MVs in their storyline concept. Note that Kai was shown he can visit both parallel worlds by teleporting. 6) Last thing to keep in mind for the storyline it's confusing if u follow the mv in order because the mvs are released (every comeback) in mixed up order like puzzled mixed together. It's up to fans to connect them together not using their date released but finding connections between everything. So far we know that the Red force have created evil exo clones (X-exo) in 2019 with obsession mv. But we will see what is next up with this year's comeback?? At this MV you can actually see that there is a lot of them. There are 12 originally members of EXO before. EXO M (Mandarin)- Kris, Chen, Tao, Luhan, Xiumin and Lay. They are focus on promoting chinese version of the songs and dominating China. While there's EXO K(Korean)- Suho, Kai, Sehun, Chanyeol, D.O and Baekhyun. Which they sing korean version of the songs and promoting in Korea. After a year and so 3 chinese members left the group due to health issues, unfair treatment and personal reasons. SM entertainment decided to combine those two groups including the Exo M and Exo K members into one. But don't get confused when they do have some variety shows before they usually appear as 12 members. And now they are down to 9 and Exo Lay were not able to join and promote the group since 2017 or 2018 due to the political conflict of China and South Korea since Lay is an Ambassador I forgot the name of the group sorry, last year Lay released an instagram post about leaving SM company and upto now we Exo Ls still don't know if he can still promote with Exo in the near future. And lastly they debuted with superpowers since they came from another planet which is Exoplanet. CHEN sang as part of EXO M when they debuted remember? It wasn't until Wolf and Growl that they sang as 12

4:00 bro this is EXO-K as you realized. So the K members are in these version and the M members are in EXO-M version. This is the reason why Chen, Lay and Xiumin are not in the song. 7:28 - 7:43 Chen and Xiumin are Koreans but Lay is Chinese. (The other EXO-M members who leave from EXO are Kris, Luhan and Tao and all of this three are Chinese.)

You were totally confused I can tell, don't worry, you'll get to understand them eventually. The color coded you watched was color coded for EXO-K, as you know they were divided into two groups EXO K for the korean members and EXO M for the Chinese members that includes Chen and Xiumin which are both koreans. Although this MAMA video you watched are focused on EXO-K members and vocals, all the members are all there both K and M. I suggest you also watch MAMA Chinese version to be able to hear and watch EXO-M members too. ❤ It takes time to fully understand THE EXO CONCEPT, and I know you'll get there someday.

In order to really see the full story you actually have to also watch the EXO-M version of "Mama." The whole point of both the EXO-K (Korean) and EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) versions of their songs and each MV is to introduce you to EXO's concept and storyline. If you only watch EXO-K, you only see half the story. "Mama" is like the first episode of EXO's drama -- it sets up everything to come in the rest of the series. And if you miss any part of the first episode you will forever be lost when it comes to the rest of EXO's story. If you watch both versions of their "Mama" MV, you might be able to understand a little more about EXO's mission and everything they have been sent to Earth to do. Because in the EXO-K version the whole story focuses on the K members, but in the M version it will show you the M members and explain their powers and each of their roles in the story. You only see small clips of the M members in the Korean version. But in the Chinese version the story continues, and the EXO-M members are the ones that are highlighted. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary. The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. SM Entertainment has all of EXO's release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance, and some of their MVs are even specifically released on days when we have had an eclipse or other planetary phenomenon. In Korean Mama is a term they use to address a leader or king or queen. It's a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family, and especially the head of the royal family or leader, "Mama." So, in this song, they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do?" etc. If you want to understand EXO's story, it's very important that you pay attention to the introduction story in "Mama" because it is literally setting up EXO's storyline. The narrator is telling you EXO's whole origin story, about how EXO have been split up into two groups EXO-K and EXO-M and they are part of the same group and yet separate -- part of two worlds that come together as one, etc. And he is telling you about how the Tree of Life has been split in half to protect it from falling into the Red Forces' control -- each half of the tree representing one half of EXO (EXO-K and EXO-M) -- and EXO's mission is to find the two halves of the tree and reunite them to restore peace in the world. In the EXO-K version of "Mama" the members are using their powers to search for and meet up with the EXO-M members. That is why you see the K members traveling to find the M member. For example, you see Kai using his power of teleportation as he searches for the M members. And, because Xiumin is a member of EXO-M, you see him appear in the mirror because the K members are searching for him and he is being summoned, etc. As the story goes, when EXO arrived on Earth they did not all arrive together. Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world -- which is explained more in their individual Pathcode teaser videos as part of their "Call Me Baby" comeback promotions -- and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do. When you see the members all together in their "Mama" MVs they are together because they are still on Planet Exo where they are still united. But when you see them separated this is when they have all been sent to Earth.They keep flashing back and forth between present moments and recent past moments. So, how I interpret the story is that at the end they aren't back together yet, but that is a scene from when they were still on Planet Exo as they are preparing to be sent to Earth. The two worlds the narrator talks about in the introduction could possibly be different dimensions, so you often see parts of their story in their MVs and other content, which could be interpreted as them being in different dimensions or time periods or different moments in history. Each of the members in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M, so part of what you were seeing in this MV was them showing you which EXO-K member corresponded with which EXO-M member. For example, Suho (EXO-K) with the power of water corresponds with Xiumin (EXO-M) who has the power of frost/ice. Chanyeol (EXO-K) with the power of fire is Kris' (EXO-M) counterpart because he has the power of flight, and as you will see when you watch the EXO-M MV, Chanyeol has the power of the phoenix and Kris has the power of the dragon, which both animal spirits have fire elements and flight so they connect. D.O. (EXO-K) with the power of force is connected to Chen (EXO-M) with the power of thunder/lightning. And Sehun (EXO-K), who has the power of wind, is connected to Tao (EXO-M) who controls time. Baekhyun (K) with the power of light is connected to Lay (M) with the power of healing; and Kai (K) with teleportation is linked to Luhan (M) with the power of telekinesis, etc. That's how they maintain their bond even as members of separate groups. Also, the symbols you saw represent each of the members and it has to do with each of their powers. For instance, Kai's symbol is a pyramid and it represents teleportation, and Lay's symbol is a unicorn and it represents his power of healing, etc. (In future MVs and other things to do with EXO, when you see things like a pyramid, you know that is a reference to something to do with Kai, etc.) Even the most minute of details in EXO's content has something to do with their origin story and EXO's storyline. During that screamo part, the "tattoos" on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO members names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story. (All of the words on Kai's face and body are in English, so, if you pause that section and really look, you will see there is a whole story even in his body paint, etc. ) And although it looks like Kai is the one that does the really high note at that moment, the voice you are hearing is actually Baekhyun. Each member in EXO-K also has a partner in EXO-M that fills the same role in their respective group. For example, Baekhyun is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; D.O. is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan was the other main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M, (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.) As you discovered, the majority of the gregorian chant is in English: "Shoot anonymous, anonymous; Heartless, mindless; No one who care about me ... Careless, careless (Mama: Mama in Korean means Your Majesty); Shoot anonymous, anonymous (Mama); Heartless, mindless (Mama); No one who care about me (Mama)." If you pay attention to what the whole song is about, it will give you even more insight into why EXO have been sent to Earth and what their mission is all about. EXO's storyline begins with them being sent to Earth to try and heal the world and to stop and prevent the Red Force from taking over and corrupting everything. And the story in the lyrics of "Mama" foreshadows what they will have to overcome and understand about humans and our world to accomplish their tasks. In this song EXO kind of takes humanity to task and asks us to explain why we would allow all this anger and hatred to cloud everything around us and why we don't love each other more? It's really a very beautiful message and the more you learn about EXO the more interesting the whole thing becomes. In the song the members, being aliens from another planet, are struggling to understand how we as humans could allow all this evil and bad things to happen all around us, such as war, hatred and the destruction of the environment, etc. and they are daunted by the fact that they are now tasked with figuring out how to fix it all and prevent more evil from taking place. That's why they need to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace. EXO's story is part supernatural and Sci-fi and part based on reality, which touches on real life events and things that are really happening in the world. And from the very beginning, even during pre-debut days, and everything since then and everything yet to come, it all is connected to that storyline. Everything EXO does and everything you see from them, including Baekhyun's and Kai's parts in SM Entertainment's supergroup SuperM, all has something to do with the concept and story that began with "Mama," and each new installment of something from the members expands a little further on EXO's story. It's all has been designed to connect to EXO's storyline.

God, they were so young! It was in 2012 and they were only rookies, so excited but nervous too and the song was hard to sing in live😿 They'll perform this song years later, as a group of 9 in EXOrDium concert. Xiumin and chen ate the 2 Korean members in EXO-M. The song is sung by EXO-K members but the MV has all 12 members in it.

It was their official debut. You know they were divided into EXO-K and EXO-M, but they were a group after all, and the storyline of their concept includes both groups as a whole, so that's why in the MV all the members were introduced. The difference is that in the MV of the Korean ver. you see only the EXO-K members singing, Suho, Kai, Baekhyun, D.O, Sehun, and Chanyeol, because they sang in Korean, and you could only see a little glimpse of the EXO-M members, mostly for us to see what their powers were and to make them part of the concept. If you look for the Chinese ver. of the MV, you will see the EXO-M members singing in Chinese and just a glimpse of EXO-K members showing their powers. It always amazes me that they did it so well in their debut. I mean, it was one of the first times they performed as a group, they were singing live, and even though they should have been really nervous, they killed it with their performance. It was great, they hit the notes, and they were stable even if they were singing and dancing at the same time. This performance makes me proud of how talented they have always been and how much effort they have put into all their performances.

Everyone's tastes are different. In my case, it was love at first sight with this song from second 0.01. It's epic, and I love the dark sounds and choir music, so it hit me right in the heart.

EXO first line up is 12 - korean line 6 members, chinese line 6 members, this is korean version, xiumin in chinese version, after 3 members departure, they combine and make korean version only
