Exercise as a Treatment for Depression [Scientific Review]

Ғылым және технология

In this short episode, Dr. Patrick discusses some of the compelling science including observational studies, randomized controlled trials, and human mechanistic studies that suggests exercise is a powerful tool for preventing or managing the symptoms of depression and mental illness. Moreover, she talks about the specific types of exercise and exercise parameters that evidence suggests might be the most helpful for depression.

I got diagnosed 17 years ago. Somethings to bear in mind: if you are severely depressed, none of the above applies because you literally have neither the will, nor the energy to do anything. Again, depending on severity, or the stage of your recovery, you may be able and willing to exercise, but if you got at it too vigorously, it may set you back. I used to find that it would leave me feeling bereft. Looking back, I suspect that having unstable blood sugar played a part. I think the key is to build up intensity very, very slowly, especially if you were unfit prior to diagnosis. Also, it may take some time to find an exercise system that suits you, i.e. that you look forward to doing. So the message is, aim for it if you can, don't beat yourself up if you can't and don't force it.

The best exercise that I’ve found for treating my depression is sprinting on the track. Essentially any exercise with high intensity intervals will be beneficial, but I’ve found that sprinting seems to provide the greatest “bang for the buck” since it is essentially a full body movement.

Interesting observation. I will try this for myself. I remember reading research on depression suggesting strongly some of the things people find helpful are: enjoying being outside in nature, time with pets, exercise, and positive social interaction. So I combined all 4 & the result is this: walk your fluffy puppy dog in a nice park with a friend. Bonus is every cute chick wants to stop and meet your puppy. Novel attractive females also boost testosterone production, which elevates mood. Woohoo.

This is my most recent addition and seems to work really well with the cold water. I'm always sceptical but so far so good so I'm continuing all three here :) Of course this is only MY experience and what has worked for me case of depression. Any thoughts on what the minimum-effective-dose is or how it differs across the 3 exercise types (strength training, aerobic, anaerobic)? For example, for anaerobic, on a recent Bulletproof podcast episode, they mention the CAR.O.L FIT AI cycling machine only requires two 20-second periods at "maximum-intensity" to get the full benefit?! Ben Greenfield had an episode on the X3 Isokinetic Bar (bone compression) which supposedly only requires 10 min/day! Or thoughts on using Blood-Flow-Restriction/Occlusion techniques for strength-training? Ken Ford for example, recommends GoBstrong and KAATSU. Are there benefits of stacking exercise mimetics (ex. Aceytl L-Carnitine (Thorne) , beta alanine, etc).. or, like antioxidants, can they potentially undo some of the positive signaling of the physical exercise? On a recent HumanOS podcast episode, Ben Miller suggests this is the case with metformin!

Incredible video. Dr. Raison talks about how blocking the inflammation pathways will prevent the mice from getting the beneficial metabolic effects from exercise. Out of curiosity, is there evidence that taking things like turmeric or ginger after intense exercise might also blunt the benefits? I find that these help me recover faster from long runs.

I stayed physically active throughout pretty much all of my depression. I can say that it definitely helps to some degree, but for me, I wouldn't really call it a treatment.

I agree its not a treatment by any means..its a distraction....that is my opinion anyway.. no one wants to say it because they dont want to bad mouth exercising... currently in lockdown and ive been cycling moderately for 45 mins every single day...yes for that moment im not depressed...but other hours of the day when im not doing anything the thoughts come back..its like trying to convince your mind not to think depressive thoughts...and the brain enjoys that...so easy to drift into the rabbit hole of depression so hard to crawl back out

I would say the problem here is depression is a catch all for a cluster of symptoms towards low mood, low motivation, all the way to physical symptoms. So depending on the underlying cause for your depressive symptoms excercise may or may not help, for other perhaps the cause is different than yours and excercise will help.

I think there is rarely one single treatment for something as complex as mental illness. Exercise is a tool, and is best combined with others to actually form a potentially successful treatment plan.

Rhonda is the most astute of all the health advocates that I've encountered. That said, aerobic exercise can be greatly enhanced as a sedative when combined with heat therapy just prior to sleep. If a hot tub is used, it's important to lean back so as to heat the brain stem and skull, and likewise to lean forward so as to submerse the face so as to treat the trigeminal nerve and in particular the occular nerves which tend to generate much of the hyper-vigilance and chronic tension that prevents sound sleep. Also of value, one may place salt--NaCl, KaCl (for lower blood pressure), MgCl and or epsom salt under the tongue with a bit of olive oil so as to further enhance this modality. KaBr is also of value, but care must be taken as when combined with other salts the possibility of liberating poisonous chlorine gas may come into play. Best therefore to take care to combine mixed salts in a spoon with water so as to check to make sure that this sort of reactivity does not take place.
