Exercise and Diet as Therapy for Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction

Exercise capacity is markedly reduced in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, due to cardiac, vascular, and skeletal muscle factors. Both exercise training and dietary weight loss improve exercise capacity and quality of life, and the improvements are associated with improvements in systemic inflammation, body composition, and mitochondrial function. Hospitalized patients with acute HFpEF have the most severe impairments, and appear to respond well to a novel rehab intervention.

80 year old with 9 years of HFpEF here. After a hospitalization in April 23, I was sent home to home health care. I got a really excellent company and crucially, got physical therapy utilizing a stationary bike in my home along with safety installations. The exercise has proved to be very important and I'm continuing it as of Jan. 24. I did not get particular diet recommendations. Last Dec, I started Farxigia at my request. I am not now nor ever have been diabetic. The quality of my life went straight up! I feel so much better on the SGL2 inhibitor that I exercise more and get around much better. I have participated in over 20 HFpEF studies at the U of Utah, but exercise and the SGLT2 inhibitor has been seriously the best yet. The diet is the big problem as I'm alone (depression risk) and don't want to bother cooking every day and eat stuff I shouldn't. I'm trying to do the right things but being alone is a big hurdle. Even a once a week check in by someone (AI not acceptable) would be helpful.

I see the doc for results of a couple of tests in about 3 weeks and I am pretty sure this is what's going on in my case. I had a stress test and and echo and I called the office, the other day, and kinda muscled them to give some clue as to my results. The could tell me that my ejection fraction is respectable - 55 to 60. But I get dizzy, I'm really tired, and I wear compression stocking for minor swelling in my legs. I also have some minor swelling in my abdomen. I'm almost 72 and I've had a pretty stressful life, hypertension for decades, so I guess this isn't something that should be surprising.
