Exercices - Terminale - Anglais : If clauses / Mr Soumaré

MISTER SOUMARÉ YOU MADE A GOOD AND CLEAR EXPLANATION ABOUT IF CLAUSES AND THANKS A LOT. BUT MY WORRIES ARE ABOUT THE PRACTICAL EXERCISE MAINLY THE 1st , 3rd and 5th ones. BECAUSE FROM MY UNDERSTANDING OF IF CLAUSES WE HAVE 2 PARTS SEPARATED BY EITHER A COMMA IF WE BEGIN BY IF CLAUSE AND END WITH THE CONSEQUENCE CLAUSE WITH A COMMA BETWEEN THEM ( IF I WORK HARD , I WILL PASS MY EXAM) OR WE PUT NO COMMA WHEN WE BEGIN BY THE CONSEQUENCE CLAUSE AND END WITH IF CLAUSE WITH IF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SENTENCE ! ( I WILL PASS MY EXAM IF I WORK HARD). SO WE DON’T PUT ANY COMMA IN THE 3rd SENTENCE. SECOND REMARK: THE IF ALWAYS GOES WITH PRESENT SIMPLE, PAST SIMPLE (PRETERIT) OR PAST PERFECT AND THE CONSEQUENCE CLAUSE ALWAYS GOES RESPECTIVELY WITH FUTURE SIMPLE, CONDITIONAL PRESENT AND CONDITIONAL PAST. THAT WHY WE HAVE HUGE MISTAKES WITH 1st, 3rd and 5th SENTENCES FROM UNDERSTANDINGS ! INSTEAD I PROPOSE: 1) ...YOUR MUM WOULD HAVE BEEN.....IF SHE HAD HEARD YOU....2) PATRICK WOULD PUNISH HIM IF HE CHEATED......5) THEY WOULD HAVE WAITED FOR.....IF YOU HADN’T ARRIVED ON TIME. THANKS AND SORRY FOR BEING TOO LONG !!!

I am sorry to say this but this whole video should be deleted and corrected before it can be uploaded again. What you said for number 1, 3 and 5 is wrong. you can't use "would" in the "if clause". "would" expresses some condition to be fulfilled if a certain action is taken into account in the other clause. You could have said "your mum would have been angry with you if she had heard you using these swearwords" for number 1, and "Patrick wouldn't have punished him if he hadn't cheated the test" for number 3, and "they wouldn't have waited for so long if you had arrived on time, for once" for number 5
