My dad passed away 4 years ago from cancer and I'm only too happy to support this video ❤
My first thought when seeing that 73 was 'I wonder if that was one of the Gatwick Express ones'. Remember them so well shooting through East Croydon back in the 80's. So nice to have a tour of Eastleigh works, so much history to the place. I remember years ago I was mad on the history of the old Isle of Wight railways, reading about how they would send their loco's over to Eastleigh for major overhauls. Really interesting to see inside the place.
Seeing the 69 in the paint shop brought back some memories. I used to paint locomotives for a living. It’s the most satisfying thing a human being can do. It’s weeks of hard work , sanding , filling, primer ,more sanding, more priming ,more filling. But when you see the locomotive finished looking absolutely stunning. It’s worth all the effort.😊

I can imagine mate, must have been an incredible feeling seeing all that hard work come off. What kind of stuff did you used to work on?
Loved the tour round an iconic place which is a vital part of the railway industry . 69009 , stunning livery .
Well done Luke for gaining permission to film at Eastleigh Works and donating the proceeds from the vid to Cancer Research, a very enjoyable watch.

Here here, your 50’s have been performing great on the gala scene over the last few weeks mate 👍🏻 hiccups at Swanage aside haha.
That 37 looks fantastic, I first seen it back in the mid 70s in BR blue of course 😂. Fabulous video for a great cause ❤
From the paint shop with the class 43, when the lads turn round and you see the long road with tracks to the right… this then second man, driving a 350 shunter ( 08) had to brake when he saw his “ train” rising into the air! On examination, we found someone had left a refuse bin under the offending wagon… We uncoupled the wagon and pulled the rest of the train towards the departure roads. I never heard anymore about this partial derailment and often wonder how the Shunting crew explained it away. Happy BR Blue days!
Seeing that 442 must have been surreal! I'd love to see one out on the network again
@DiggleJunction

Very surreal, I never really saw them growing up as a kid in the North West but always loved the look of them. Fingers crossed the plans to use the finished set for railtours will come to fruition sooner rather than later.
Cracking video, it brought back a lot of memories. Good to see my namesake still looking well

Nice to see 73101 still in reasoable shape. Whilst I realise that it may still be primarily scource of spares I hope that GB Railfreight do not lose sight the fact that it is the first JB 73 built and that it has a future ahead of it in a running condition.

Thanks a lot mate I appreciate that, took a lot of arranging but they were absolutely brilliant in helping get it sorted. Glad you enjoyed it, makes it worth the effort.
Ref. The engine that couldn’t be reunited with its boiler, due to the weight limit of a road bridge being changed. It might be worth making enquiries to the R.A.F. Back in 1990, the company I worked with, needed to get a piece of plant ( a very large cylindrical tank ) down a very steep hill. The low-loader lorry, could not get into the site, due to poor accessibility. The R.A.F. said they could use our case as an exercise, and the only cost to our company, was the insurance. A team of on the ground personnel turned up, followed shortly by a Chinook helicopter, which lifted the tank in place, allowing the installers to carry out their work. Again, that was in the 1990’s wether the R.A.F. Would be interested, or even able / allowed to do this today, is anyone’s guess, but might be wort a try.
69009 looks fire!!

Well Luke, what an experience! Thanks so much for sharing this with us and also to aid such a great cause too. You had a good rapport with Carl which really brought it alive and he's obviously an enthusiast himself. I have been to Eastleigh Works on an Ian Allan locospotters trip in April 1958, it was the second works of the day following on from Swindon Works where steam locos were still being built! I've still got the ticket.
@DiggleJunction
12 күн бұрын
Thanks a lot mate, Carl’s an absolute top bloke 👍🏻 that must have been one hell of a day, especially with all the steamers around.
Thanks Luke - very interesting vid. Last time I visited Eastleigh works was in steam days! I like the 69 livery - was a teenager when the class 52s were new in a variety of colours, but maroon was definitely the best, and it looks great on the 69. All the best from NZ, Marty
@DiggleJunction
12 күн бұрын
Thanks a lot Marty, bet those early days of the Westerns was great with all that variety of colour.
Thanks for putting that together Luke, and to Arlington for letting you visit - brilliant stuff! I have to say I love 009's livery - when I was little my parents took me on a day trip to Bristol Zoo, Waiting at Temple Meads for our train home a massive (to a 6 year old!) red diesel engine pulled in - it was a maroon Western and that started a lifelong interest in diesel locos! Bit disappointed with 010's scheme, I was hoping for railfreight grey/red stripe - but as Carl mentioned that as one of his favourites, you never know! 🙂

That’s an awesome memory mate, we all seem to have one of those moments that cemented this hobby for life, mine was on my Grandads shoulders on Todmorden station and a 37 came round the bend with a load of empty four wheel coal hoppers, you can imagine the noise haha. I think 012 is the next to get a special paint job.
What an absolutely cracking video for a great cause m8

Hi Luke, another excellent video. Well done for getting permission to go around the works. I love the colour of 69009. Living in Bristol, I am old enough (and some more) to remember the Western Hydraulics in their heyday. They were a particular favourite class of mine, so top marks to GB Railfreight for this livery.

Cheers Mike, much appreciated. I see what Carl meant when we said he was worried it might not pull off what GBRF wanted but I think they knocked it out of the park.
The 141 had twin Leyland TL11 engines and Leyland SCG gearboxes, basically Leyland National mk2 running gear. That 141 lived at Earls Colne museum, and was advertised for sale a few years back.
@DiggleJunction
