Exclusive: Riky Rick's family remembers him six months after his death
The late rapper, singer, and producer Rikahdo Riky Rick Makhado took his life in February this year. The passing of the iconic hitmaker, sent shockwaves across the music industry and left his family, friends, and fans devastated. On the six-month anniversary of the tragic event, I visited the family at their Waterfall, Midrand home and sat down for an intimate conversation, checking in on how life has been and how they have been making sense of losing him.

I wrote a letter to Bianca Naidoo. Riky's death left us shocked and during the time I felt like the media focused on Riky. I wanted to make sure she was okay. I hope one day she finds the video. I wish healing on her and her children. The video is on my channel.

Ricky's life was and remains a gift. A couple of things I'd like to commend: 1) The family for sharing their honest reflections and perspectives. The pain is deep and is evident but they continue to honour him. 2) The love that remains with the family and his people despite the grief 3) SABC for checking in, in a gentle manner. On that, Iman, for being a listening and compassionate interviewer who was able to balance emotions, allowed the voices of the family to come through I'm still in awe at how Ricky created a culture that outlives him. He served with heart.

Such a wise mother, Ricky had an amazing family from the dad to the partner. May they all find healing
I adored him more on The Voice SA when he was part of the judging team. I think that's where I got to feel the real Riky, such a vibrant colourful Soul. THANK LORD FOR HIS LIFE.

I directed Coke Studio for etv, with Riky Rick and other South African and African greats, and Riky won the producer's and crew's hearts with his talent, warmth, passion, and love. I absolutely loved working with him and have so much respect for the great man.

No one deserves to go through the pain of depression or losing a loved one. Honestly, depression is a silent deadly killer. Just like any other sickness, you always hope the wave will subside just like the other times. And people saying Ricky should have planned. He also thought he would get through it like the other times. Thank you Bianca for being brave and helping us heal the death of such a lovely man. As someone who has been feeling depressed for the longest time of my life and who, at some point, attempted suicide, I really know and understand what Ricky was going through. Sometimes you feel like you can just go to sleep and never wake up the next day. Depression is a very dark dense cloud that you have to deal with only by yourself because the person next to you never understands it. I started off university carrying this heavy load on my back and I'm finishing this year still struggling with this disease. Everyday I'm just praying it never gets worse because there is no hope for cure. Love and light to everyone dealing with it...

Love and light to you and thanks for sharing your struggle as well. It hit me by surprise after I recovered from covid in 2020, I had no idea why I was feeling so low months after I recovered, until I had one of my Professors say in a random conversation that one of the lingering effects after covid is depression then I started dealing with it because I was so confused. It truly is one of the darkest things ever. I pray for everyone going through it to find some sort of coping mechanism.

I had know Kumi Naidoo for a long time, through his appearances on the news due to his activism, however, I was not aware that he was Ricky's (step)father. What a small world indeed!

That's why I personally think SABC is not that they care as ones person has alluded, they just want news in Zulu bathanda izindaba when you grieve you don't want such questions I'm talking from experience I haven't healed as in now they should just leave the young woman to grieve in peace
