It has a crew of nearly 2,000 people, is 262 metres long and has a flight deck bigger than a football pitch: welcome on board the Charles de Gaulle! The French aircraft carrier is now on her way home. Since December, it has been operating in the Persian Gulf as part of the fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. Life on board an aircraft carrier at war is intense. For five days, our reporters got a close-up look at daily life on board the pride of the French Navy.
As soon as the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier arrived in the Persian Gulf on December 19, 2015, France took command of the naval operations of the coalition against the Islamic State group. The French handed command over to the Americans two months later. "This is a first, which is the fruit of long cooperation with the United States”, explains Admiral René-Jean Crignola.
The aircraft carrier is a floating city, with 2,000 people on board. Among them, the fighter jet pilots are trained like athletes, and are pampered and privileged. They must not lose concentration during their operations. Each mission can last up to six hours. Life on the runway is organised around them to ensure a safe take-off and landing. This feels like a feat every time, as the catapult - the device that launches the planes - is just 75 metres in length. Since December, nearly 400 sorties have been carried out, either bombing terrorist targets or on intelligence missions in Syria or Iraq.
►►On France24.com, also watch our report: "On board a French frigate in the Persian Gulf".
On the bridge, the ship’s navigation is geared towards the aircraft, which have to take off against the wind. The ship must constantly seek that position. At the workshop, nearly 500 technicians and mechanics are busy 24 hours a day. They need to repair each fighter jet, each technical glitch.
The crew set sail just after the November 2015 terror attacks in Paris. When they leave on a mission, they never know how long it will last. Nor their next destination.

    From what I know working in the engineering arm of the airforce of my country, we have SOPs and maintenance guide books. Base on symptoms and experience every known issue are mostly recurring fixes. It’s only rare issues that require digging beyond maintenance guides and experiences and get stunned once in a while but there is always someone gifted in this aspect as if they can speak to the machines and instantly find the issues .

    Sure, for a few more years. China is already building it's 3rd carrier, a catobar carrier, far larger than French carrier. Russia is planning on building a new class of CATOBAR super carrier with India. France only has one carrier meaning it's not available 24/7/365. In fact, it's in a major refit right now

    they will not be more powerfull they are smaller, and rely on combustion propulsion, while the french cairrer runs on nuclear the uk ships dont have aircraft right now, at least fixed wing, uk AEW is merli helicopter based, while the french is hawkeye fixed wing, more powerful, and longer endurance and range the french ship operates etendards and rafales, both superior than the f35 STOVL as they are lighter, cheaper not only to purchase but dont have to be shipped to turkey to be maintained, still they are a wonderful improvement over the invincible class, lots of lessons learned from the falklands

    @ARVIN China only has one carrier in service, and if mermory serves only another STOBAR in the works, and are still developing carrier operations procedures and accumulating experience, as until now they had none. Russia's carrier plans are little more than publicity stunts, every once in a while they announce that they plan on making one in the next few years and then nothing ever happens. They don't even have the know-how anymore, if memory serves the Soviet shipyard that built all of their Soviet-era carriers is currently...in Ukraine! They keep trying to come up with ideas to make them more affordable (a think tank proposed a catamaran one, which would never work due to the stresses of the two hulls on the deck), but it never works out. The Kuznetsov meanwhile is hanging on for dear life, their frigates are constantly facing development problems and even their Lider-class destroyers have been all but cancelled. The Russian Navy is in a crisis that will take them a long time to get out of.

    When she says that France is the only European Nation with an Aircraft Carrier Battle Group, she means that France has a CATOBAR (Capable of launching Rafales, and F-18's. Soon F-35) aircraft carrier, the same ones that the US has. These carriers can launch heavy aircraft, unlike STOVL which usually use helicopters and harrier jump jets.

  • @doneyhon4227

    @doneyhon4227

    7 жыл бұрын

    For me, STOBAR aircraft carriers with STOVL aircrafts like the F-35B or the Harrier, are nothing but somewhat useless platforms. There is no comparison possible with a true CATOBAR nuclear carrier + classic aircrafts such as the Rafale in terms of projection of forces AND geopolitical power. So we can assume that France is the second blue water country after the US. Britain is so far behind today, sadly.

  • @jamesalders896

    @jamesalders896

    +Doney Hon I would be inclined to agree with you however the Queen elizabeth aircraft carrier will not have CATOBAR systems yet will be able to project significantly more power than charles de gaulle. The F-35B is significantly more capable than the Harrier.

  • @sucellus5452

    bip wrong... QE2 no anti air defense, no hawkeyes... and can launch only F35 on STOVL version. wich mean 2 bombs and 2 missile as weapon payload and only at 1000km of range.... Rafale M in heavy load configuration it's 6 missile 6 bomb and 3 fuel tank at 3200 km... 27 rafale at full payload have more fire power than 40 F35 in STOVL...

  • @MrBandholm

    @MrBandholm

    7 жыл бұрын

    Claiming that STOBAR carriers are "somewhat useless" is simply wrong... Are they as capable as CATOBAR? No! But that doesn't make them useless. The Falklands alone should have shown that. Still I agree that France must be seen as the second blue water navy right now, due to both De Gaulle, and their new helicopter assault ships, they have made some really impressive units!

  • @isunlloaoll

    @isunlloaoll

    7 жыл бұрын

    The thing is... European countries don't really need CATOBAR carriers. They're not expected to project the kind of power US does. Even this French carrier is tiny and can't even operate the new generation F35C.

    @Adecodoo : Calling the US and France "Belligerent" nations seems like something of an overstatement to me though friend. Use of their military forces in this day and age is usually in reaction to hostile actions of others against either them, their friends, or other weaker countries. It is one thing to hit someone in the face for pleasure or personal greed, it's a totally different thing to hit someone in the face because they hit you, one of your friends, or someone who can't defend themselves. Neither country is totally innocent of misdeeds over the years though. They had their hands in pies that they probably shouldn't have on occasion, but few countries in the world have a totally clean wrap sheet when it comes to that. There are some people who might complain about France, US, UK, and some other nations, but a ton of people in other countries cry for help from these nations when they need help, and those nations are usually willing to give whatever military or humanitarian aid that they can, while some other nations do nothing but sit back and point fingers whenever something goes wrong.
