Shri Khuraijam Athouba's opinion on the Kukis of Manipur and the present crisis is superb and beautifully expressed. He started by saying the Kukis came to Manipur during Maharaj Narasingh's reign (in the 1840s when Captain Gordon was the Political Agent). He has mentioned them as native Kukis (of Manipur). It may perhaps be a slip of tongue, for the meaning of "native" according to the Oxford English Dictionary is "a non-white original inhabitant of a country as regarded by European colonists or travellers". He repeated the words "native Kukis" again and I am unsure if he's using it knowingly or unknowingly. His statement perhaps is self-contradictory and needs clarification. How can a group of nomads in the 1840s become "native"? Our adversaries may have the last laugh. Major-General Sir James Johnstone, KCSI, the Political Agent in Manipur (1877-1886) in his book, Manipur and the Naga Hills, wrote, "The Kukis are a wandering race consisting of several tribes who have long been working up from the South. They were first heard of as Kukis, in Manipur, between 1830 and 1840". (Page 25). He further wrote, "Their original home cannot be correctly ascertained, but there seem to be traces of them as far south as the Malay peninsula". (Page 27). There are many authoritative books written by British administrators in Manipur. Names like Major W. McCulloch, R. Brown, A. Mackenzie, CA Soppitt, EW Dun, Major W. Shakespeare, TC Hodson, CG Crawford, William Shaw, Ethel Grimwood etc are popular for their books on Manipur and her people. None of them however ever stated the Kukis as indigenous and aborigines of Manipur. The Kuki-Zo tribes today claimed themselves as one of the ten lost tribes of Israel called Bnei Menashe. Led by seniors like LS Thangjom, a retired IAS, they were accepted by the Israeli govt as their lost tribes. A batch of about five thousand Kuki-Zo tribes waiting in the queue for immigration to Israel as reported by Jordyn Haime of the Times of Israel dated October 6, 2023. God bless them.
