Kannada, a Dravidian language spoken majorly by Kannadigas. This beautiful language is not just mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution but is also one of the oldest languages in the world. According to the oldest literary works in the Epigraphs, the old Kannada flourished during the Ganga as well as the Rashtrakuta Dynasty in the 6th century AD and the 9th century AD respectively. The oldest preserved manuscript in Kannada is Jain Bhandar, Mudbidri palm-leaf manuscript of Dhavala, containing 1478 leaves in old Kannada from the 9th century AD. Not just that, linguists believe that the language branched off from the pronto-Tamil South Dravidian division even before the Christian Era, making Kannada older than English and Hindi. Kannada is known as the most scientific and logical language in the world. The way Kannada language has been written using the Kannada script, there is no scope for silent letters. Did you know Reverend Ferdinand Kittel is known for his study of the Kannada language? And he is the one to produce a Kannada-English dictionary of about 70,000 words in 1894, making Kannada the only Indian language to have a dictionary written by a foreigner. Chariton mime, which is a Greek theatre play, has used Kannada phrases. Apparently, the great Greek dramatists were familiar with the language in the 4th Century BCE. It has been found in various literature across the area that Euripides and Aristophanes used Kannada phrases and expressions in their dialogues in their dramas.
