Make no mistake. She was the superstar of superstars. Silent picture audiences were initially stunned by her astonishing beauty. But this was no promising starlet. This was a born film queen. Her silent film performances were flawless. She could say as much with a look as with a speech. When it came time for her to enter sound pictures, producers first were worried. Then she made that Swedish accent so compelling, no one could walk away. And then the classic CAMILLE. She captured every emotional nuance of that beleaguered woman. Again, as much as with words, she spoke with her countenance. Each emotion was registered through facial expression. Greta Garbo was a mysterious personality. Private and incredibly intelligent, she controlled her career, standing up to both directors and producers. When Louis B. Mayer was hesitant to grant her a much deserved pay increase, she boldly informed him "I go back to Sweden." She got her raise and anything else she wanted. Benny Anderrson told the audience during the ceremony granting ABBA their rock and roll award that living in Sweden where the winters are extensive and the nights are long influences the dark personalities of the citizens. He referred to Garbo. He was probably correct. As with everything she did, she knew when to exit. Without explanation, she walked away from the career that had made her a legend. She never apologized nor looked back. In the process, she has never been forgotten. What a person!

Greta was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. There was something about her. 43 years ago I saw one of her movies and I fell in love with her. I went out and little by little I bought most of her movies . I still have them all. Beautiful video. Thanks

I'd rather see the whole image than have the screen constantly pan upwards or downwards. I want to see the effect of the whole woman- not which ever closeup the editor's decided on, separating the lower half of the face from the hair etc. Otherwise- the colourising is lovely.

Have to ask something here-garbo and Clara bow were born at the same time-but guess clara bow was different-it may be just like me and somebody else a long time back-guess the big difference is that I was am not an actor-am talking of myself back in 72 or so-maybe a contrast exists outwardly-maybe clara bow and Greta garbo were inwardly the same-from the picture-I got about garbo by reading about her and from listening things like this-why not somebody compare garbo with clara bow-both born in 1905 -I guess-my late grandmother was born in 1908. -let both beauties and my grandmother rest in peace. ☺👍❤

So funny (in the strange context) that in fact photos taken of her in Sweden: some showed her as being homely, heavy and a gal who wouldn't warrant a second look. Kudos to Max Factor, dieting and God. Photos of Lucille LeSueur before she was Joan of Crawford were of the similar variety.

Colorization is not Technicolor; which was available during the best years of Garbo's career. There must be a reason why it was not used for her. Could it have been that her natural coloring was not as photogenic as her features?

@@songbirdy She was a guy. Read the biographies. Her MGM contract named her as "Garbo, the actor",who will go through "poses". This is before ( about 60 years before) women artists were called by the male form "actor." She was unable to go out in public as there were few male garments she could wear by law while retaining her image as a woman, again, read the bios. Look at her body, her male neck, hands, feet and shoulders. In some films you can see a bulge in her crotch. Garbo being male takes nothing away from her performances or beauty.

I think Garbo photographs better in black and white.
