It's the first plane to put all the data onto a helmet-mounted display (HMD), which shows everything the HUD would, but the pilot can look anywhere. Wherever he looks, if there is a target or friendly plane there, there will be a marker around it, even if it's BVR. Even if he looks back at the fuselage of the plane, if there is a enemy right behind him, he will see a target marker and a range marker showing him that the enemy is there, hidden behind the plane. If he looks forward he will see the usual climb, pitch and roll indicator bars floating in the air before him, along with airspeed, fuel, altitude, weapons selection....everything that's on the HUD, but always in front of his eyes. A pretty good idea, if it works (and if you can afford it.....each helmet costs like $300,000 to $400,000. That's why the pilot looks like a Tie Fighter pilot, and that's why you will never see an F-35 pilot's face while he's flying, just that black ugly helmet face (I call him the Supersonic Stig).

    @Albertkallal

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@nicolasgarcia248 why? The f35 has had the best track record of ANY fighter program in the history of USA fighters. They only lost one due to a engine failure, and the one in Japan looks to be pilot error. The Heritage institute fundED a study of the F35, and they were given access to 31 pilots. 20 F16 pilots (now flying F35) 4 F15-E pilots (now flying F35) 1 A-10 pilot (now flying F35) 1 F15-C (now flying F35). Leader of this assessment was a F16 pilot who seen action in Middle East, and deployment in Europe, Pacific and was an F-16 weapons officer for composite wing experiments study for the F-16. So this guy KNOWS what he is talking about, and was VERY able to get real information from the pilots he worked with do this assessment of the F35. So, he is a test pilot. They were promised 100% anonymously and NO retributions for their honest assessments. Fully 100% of the above pilots stated they would choose the F35 for BVR engagements. However, MOST interesting was OVER 80% choosing the F35 for dog fighting situations where energy and maneuverability are critical to success. So if it don’t fly well, then why do F15 and f16 pilots OVERWHELMINGLY choose the F35 for dog-fighting then? Hum? Now with the above, how about we take pilot notes from OTHER pilots not involved in the above study. After all, all these pilots can't be lying, can they? But long time f16 pilots now flying the f35 state the f35 is a BETTER dog fighter. Not only do they state the f35 is BETTER at dogfighting then the f16, but they ALSO state the f35 reacts faster and quicker to pilot inputs. And in high AOA, then the f35 REALLY waxes the floor against the f16 and f18. To quote a real pilot: The F-35 provides me as a pilot greater authority to point the nose of the airplane where I desire. (The F-35 is capable of significantly higher Angle of Attack (AOA) than the F-16. So it easier to point the f35!!! And the pilot goes on to state: This improved ability to point at my opponent enables me to deliver weapons earlier than I am used to with the F-16, it forces my opponent to react even more defensively, and it gives me the ability to reduce the airspeed quicker than in the F-16. and it gets even better! Since I first wrote this post, I have flown additional sorties where I tried an even more aggressive approach to the control position - more aggressive than I thought possible. It worked just fine. The F-35 sticks on like glue, and it is very difficult for the defender to escape and this: Defensive situations often result in high AOA and low airspeeds. At high AOA the F-16 reacts slowly when I move the stick sideways to roll the airplane. Note how the pilot says the f-16 reacts slow!!! Who wants to fly a plane that reacts slow? How silly is that??? And Yet another quality of the F-35 becomes evident in this flight regime; using the rudder pedals I can command the nose of the airplane from side to side. The F-35 reacts quicker to my pedal inputs than the F-16 would at its maximum AOA (the F-16 would actually be out of control at this AOA). the f16 would be OUT of control!!!! - the f16 does not fly well!!! And the f16 is the dogfighting standard that ALL fighters are judged by. Another aspect is the kind of reaction I get when I push the stick forward; the F-35 reacts immediately, and not delayed like the F-16. Looking at another F-35 doing such maneuvers is an impressive sight. The various control surfaces on the airplane are large, and they move very quickly. Note NOW we NOT talking about AOA, but simply how the f35 responds to pilots inputs. I am not sure where this "myth" of the f35 can't dogfight came from, but you REALLY need to read actual pilot notes. There is not one pilot from a f18, f16, and YES even the f15 that after flying the f35 has NOT stated they would choose the f35 hands down. The f35 will out fly, and out dogfight a f16, or f18 easy. And the f35 is faster then f18, 16, Eurofighter typhoon, and even the Rafael. You see, those jets top speeds are rated without weapons on the wings. Take a f18 at top speed (38,000 feet is best speed - air is thin, but not too thin for engines to work and get oxygen). The top speed of the f18 is Mach 1.8. However, hang just 4 AIMS (air to air missiles) on that f18, and NOW top speed is only Mach 1.3 (slower then f35 at Mach 1.6). You see, the f35 flies clean without junk on wings. And that saves fuel, and allows greater top speeds then the fighters it replaces WHEN those planes actually have weapons hung on the wings. The f35 will out fly, out speed, and outclass near very 4th gen fighter in dogfighting WHEN in combat configuration. And we NOT talking about stealth, but HOW the pilots LOVE the way the f35 can fly and dogfight. .

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@nicolasgarcia248 Well, I do buy the story. Since pilots OFTEN make a mistake in regards to how much time they have to pull out of a dive. It not that the jet is telling you your altitude, but the pilot makes a maneuver in which he has miss judged the rate at which the ground is approaching. He may well have been hot dogging the jet, perhaps did a loop, and miss judged how fast the ocean floor is approaching. The Japan jet hit the water at high speed - and the wreckage pattern suggests this. If the pilot was in trouble due to engine failure or other issues then the pilot would eject, or even consider "soft" ditching the jet in the water. Such a huge impact into the water means high speed, and HIGH angle, and not an attempt by the pilot to soft bail into the ocean. And if their was engine trouble, the pilot would have ample time to eject. The pilot did not eject, but worse hit the water at a hard angle and at high speed. Japan air force likely knows what occurred, and it looking like pilot error, but worse that he was fooling around. Pilot disorientation has near ZERO to do with being able to read a silly altimeter - but EVERYTHING to do with the pilot making a bad judgement call. We lose several pilots a year to this issue, and that is why rather soon the F35 will get a ground avoidance collision system. So, if a pilot starts a loop, or hard turn that would result in them being UN-ABLE to pull out and hit the ground , or a hill,the system will take over. This issue and system is explained here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iousmI-ae5uvk84.html

    You mean, perfect flight computer. Latest gen aircraft are aerodynamically unstable to allow for crazy maneuvers. Without the computers keeping the aircraft stable at all times this aircraft would be a death trap. Take a look at the Ailerons and Elevators between 1:17-1:27. That is the computer working away keeping the plane stable.

    @@nvstewart F-35A and B don't have aelierons. They have flaperons. Notice only a single trailing edge control surface on each wing. Senior test and Fighter Weapons School instructor pilots who have flown scores of different jets say the F-35 is the easiest aircraft they've ever flown. It will maintain stability and continue to make controlled maneuvers down to 50kts in some cases, and won't depart at Mach 1.4 if you execute full R roll rate while stomping L rudder. It will quickly pass through supersonic if you don't back off the throttle after take off, even in a 30° climb. Look how quickly he did 750mph in this demo. 750mph at lower temperature would have been Mach 1.

  • @nvstewart

    Yes and this stability is achieved by the Fly-By Wire system which is included in most aircraft from Gen 4 and upwards to turn a unstable aircraft into a stable aircraft which equates to better maneuverability. Thanks for correcting me on the Flaperons.

    @@nvstewart I haven't seen much discussion about the F-35 airfoil being an edge of static stability design like the F-16 is. It definitely is a modern lifting body though with lift generated by the nose section, chines, and intakes for vortices generation at high AOA. Also, twin vertical stab designs are typically very stable, especially on aircraft with 2 intakes, a blended wing body, with lots of lifting force. Tube fuselages like the F-104 and the blended wing/tube fuselage of the Viper are not very stable at low speeds. The F-35's fly-by-light DFLCS is an additional attenuation of a relatively stable airfoil.

  • @nvstewart

    @nvstewart

    5 жыл бұрын

    I will just leave this here, it is a snippet from an article from Lockheed Martin's website. "The F-35, in most of its flight envelope, is unstable in pitch and neutrally stable in yaw. What that means is that if there were a nose-up or nose-down disturbance that the stabs didn’t immediately react to counter, the disturbance would grow. RAPIDLY. At normal cruise speeds, the time for an angle of attack (AOA) disturbance to double, if not corrected, would be about a quarter of a second. This instability makes the airplane agile and highly efficient aerodynamically, but it would also make it unflyable were it not for the flight control system - doggedly, eighty times per second - positioning the stabs to keep the nose pointing into the wind. So, as golden-armed as we F-35 pilots are, if we were responsible for positioning the control surfaces ourselves, the airplane would be out of control in seconds." So of course the aircraft is easy to fly, computers do all the hard work. Take away the computer and the F-35's would be dropping like flies.
