One thing Americans never seem to grasp is that it doesn't matter what you think or what I think, it only matters what the employer says. Virginia is an "at will" employment state. Even with a firefighters union, he has little to no representation. Keep in mind that if employee rights are weakened, as we've seen in GOP-led states, we employees don't have any recourse when suspended or fired, even for unjust cause. A court would start with looking at the law, which, under "at will" employment statutes, employers are given the primary right to fire who they see fit, even without cause. So I stand by my first statement. If it's a joke from a TV show, maybe he can charge people for his jokes, or maybe become a teen actor. Short of that, maybe you can throw a temper tantrum to get what you want.

If he was playing an "innocent game that has existed since time immemorial," then he is unfit to be a firefighter. Firefighting is perhaps the single most prestigious job on the planet. With 200+ applicants for every opening, the nation's career fire service will not cease to function when one bad apple is given his walking papers.
